Strength and strain enhancements of concrete columns confined with FRP sheets

The compressive behavior up to failure of short concrete members reinforced with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is investigated. Rectangular cross-sections are analysed by means of a simplified elastic model, able also to explain stress-concentration. The model allows one to evaluate the equivalent uniform confining pressure in ultimate conditions referred to the effective confined cross-section and to the effective stresses in FRP along the sides of section; consequently, it makes it possible to determine ultimate strain and the related bearing capacity of the confined member corresponding to FRP failure. Study of nucleation and growth processes of ettringite in diluted conditions

Abstract Ettringite is a key compound of cementitious materials, formed during hydration that influences the rheological behavior of the cement paste. Despite its importance, ettringite formation has been poorly studied. In this work, nucleation and growth processes of ettringite were separately investigated. Heterogeneous Displacement Effects of Migrant Labor Supply – Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Germany

We provide estimates of the effect of migrant labor supply on resident employment. We exploit variation in the number of asylum seekers eligible to the suspension of a major hiring restriction implemented in a subset of German counties. Our difference-in-difference design allows us to provide evidence from a labor supply shock of migrants on local markets net of their additional spending at arrival that might mask labor market displacement effects. Despite this, we do not find a negative effect on employment growth of natives but only on other foreign residents. This also holds for unskilled employees. Experiments in Value Function Approximation with Sparse Support Vector Regression

We present first experiments using Support Vector Regression as function approximator for an on-line, sarsa-like reinforcement learner. To overcome the batch nature of SVR two ideas are employed. The first is sparse greedy approximation: the data is projected onto the subspace spanned by only a small subset of the original data (in feature space). This subset can be built up in an on-line fashion. Second, we use the sparsified data to solve a reduced quadratic problem, where the number of variables is independent of the total number of training samples seen. The feasability of this approach is demonstrated on two common toy-problems.

Strong Emission Enhancement in pH‐Responsive 2:2 Cucurbit[8]uril Complexes

Organic fluorophores, particularly stimuli-responsive molecules, are very interesting for biological and material sciences applications, but frequently limited by aggregation- and rotation-caused photoluminescence quenching. A series of easily accessible bipyridinium fluorophores, whose emission is quenched by a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) mechanism, is reported.
