The Challenges in Moving from Ageing to Successful Longevity
2014
During the last decades survival has significantly improved and centenarians are becoming a fast-growing group of the population. Human life span is mainly dependent on environmental and genetic factors. Favourable modifications of lifestyle factors (e.g. physical activity, diet and not smoking) and healthcare (e.g. effective vascular disease prevention) have also increased human life span. Genetic factors contribute to the variation of human life span by around 25%, which is believed to be more profound after 85 years of age. It is likely that multiple factors influence life span and we need answers to questions such as: 1) What does it take to reach 100?, 2) Do centenarians have better he…
Si j'aurai su, j'aurai pas venu" : éclairage stratégique sur le lancement simultané des deux " Guerre des Boutons "
2014
“If I knew, I will not come”: strategic insight on the simultaneous launch of the two Guerre des BoutonsThe purpose of this paper is to propose an insight on an unusual strategic situation in the movie industry: thesimultaneous launch on screens of two almost identical movies, La Guerre des Boutons. After recalling the stakesattached to the product launch in the film industry, a monograph devoted to this direct confrontation, supplementedby an analysis of the critics of spectators, is proposed. This analysis reveals determinants (the conflictand lack of control in the film industry) and consequences (sub-optimal strategy) of the temporal agglomeration.

Changes in Salivary Amylase and Glucose in Diabetes: A Scoping Review
2021
Background and Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common long-term disease which can be related with salivary amylase levels. DM has recently been associated with salivary amylase diagnostics that could further impair diagnoses in the diabetic population, as well as being an interesting alternative to traditional methods of determine glucose levels. The main advantage of this method is related to the fact that it is a fast diagnostic method. The DM population experiences changes to their metabolism which affects their salivary parameters, making this an alternative procedure for diagnosis and follow-up of the illness due to the non-invasive nature of salivary analyzes. The objective of …

Biogas measurement techniques and the associated errors
2011
There are several techniques for the measurement of laboratory scale biogas production. This thesis describes the study and evaluation of the most significant and commonly used biogas measurement techniques and analyzes the source of errors associated with the measurement of biogas production. Firstly, inaccuracy mainly due to biogas carbon dioxide (CO₂) dilution in displaceable liquids and losses to atmosphere of dissolved CO₂ was evaluated by testing solubility of CO₂ in different barrier solutions. Saturated acidified brine solution showed lower CO₂ solubility among the tested solutions. An accurate, simple, automated and easy to calibrate laboratory scale liquid displacement gas measuri…
Nuovi dati sulla catacomba di Sabratha (Libia)
2016

Speculation and Justification in Policy-Making on Neuroenhancement
2013
Neuroscientific findings allow interventions in the human brain to improve its function or modify mental states even without medical indication. This procedure, termed as neuroenhancement, is subject to a broad ethical debate. As neuroenhancement is an evolving phenomenon, the debate is necessarily future-oriented and highly dependent on information about future developments. It remains an open question to what degree uncertain forecasting or even speculation should be considered in the ethical debate and policy-making. I propose to distinguish between arguments with three different purposes: intuition-forming, self-reflecting and justifying arguments. Adequate standards are required for al…
