Ammonite Faunal Dynamics Across Bio-Events During the Mid-and Late Cretaceous Along the Russian Pacific Coast
2012
The present paper focuses on the evolutionary dynamics of ammonites from sections along the Russian Pacific coast during the mid-and Late Cretaceous. Changes in ammonite diversity (i.e., disappearance [extinction or emigration], appearance [origination or immigration], and total number of species present) constitute the basis for the identification of the main bio-events. The regional diversity curve reflects all global mass extinctions, faunal turnovers, and radiations. In the case of the Pacific coastal regions, such bio-events (which are comparatively easily recognised and have been described in detail), rather than first or last appearance datums of index species, should be used for glo…
The analysis of the relationship between the Philostratean text and the one of Seneca (only Tragedies), Ovid and Statius confirmed the presence in Philostratus' Imagines of allusions to some Hellenistic lost works (we refer to Callimachus and Nicander) . In addition, thanks to a parallel between…
Solanum lanceolatum (Solanaceae) in Sicily: A new alien species for the European flora
2015
Solanum lanceolatum Cav. (Solanaceae) is a species native to Central America (Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Panama), that has been found naturalized near Sutera and Porto Empedocle (Sicily). This is the first record in Italy and Europe.
The trace fossil gyrochorte: ethology and paleoecology
2021
Specimens of the trace fossil Gyrochorte from the Ordovician, Jurassic and Cretaceous of Utah, and the Pliocene of Spain are described. These occurrences expand the stratigraphic range of the ichnogenus, and allow for a reexamination of this paleoenvironmentally sensitive and puzzling trace fossil. The recognition of the penetrative characteristic of the trace is essential for a correct identification, as some trace fossils have been erroneously ascribed to Gyrochorte in the past. The producer must have been a detritus-feeding worm-like animal, probably an annelid, that created a bilobed, vertically penetrating and sometimes plaited meandering trace. Gyrochorte typically occurs in sandy f…
Stratigraphy and stage boundaries in reference sections of the Upper Cretaceous Chalk in the east of the Paris Basin: the “Craie 700” Provins borehol…
2005
Abstract The Provins boreholes (Poigny: Craie 701, and Sainte-Colombe: Craie 702) drilled in 1999 as part of the “Craie 700” project initiated by the Paris Basin Geologists' Association provide reference sections for the Upper Cretaceous of the eastern part of the Paris Basin. The lithology of the Cretaceous drilled at Poigny and Sainte-Colombe is presented in two logs displaying major litho-events that provide lines of correlation. Bio-events are expressed by the appearance/disappearance of index species of fossils. Foraminifera give a biozonation close to that defined by previous work on the Anglo-Paris Basin. Some of these bio-events provide a second set of lines useful for correlation. …

A new giant ground bird from the Upper Cretaceous of southern France
1998
New discoveries afford a much better knowledge of the large birds previously reported from the Upper Cretaceous of southern France on the basis of a single synsacrum fragment. An incomplete pelvis consisting of the synsacrum with part of the ilia is used to define a new taxon of bird, Gargantuavis philoinos , to which a femur is also referred. This bird is characterized by its very large size (comparable to that of an ostrich), a broad pelvis with an anteriorly placed acetabulum, and a short robust femur. The occurrence of this very large, flightless, bird in the Late Cretaceous shows that, contrary to widespread opinion, the evolution of large terrestrial birds was not simply the result of…
Codon usage in the siliceous sponge Geodia cydonium: highly expressed genes in the simplest multicellular animals prefer C- and G-ending codons
2001
Among a sample of 39 Geodia cydonium (Demospongiae, Porifera) genes, with an average Gh+hC content of 51.2%, extensive structural heterogeneity and considerable variations in synonymous codon usage were found. The G + C content of coding sequences and G + C content at silent codon positions (GC3S) varied from 42.4 to 59.2% and from 35.6 to 76.5%, respectively. Correspondence analysis of 39 genes revealed that putative highly expressed genes preferentially use a limited subset of codons, which were therefore defined as preferred codons in G. cydonium. A total of 22 preferred codons for 18 amino acids with synonyms in codons were identified and they all (with one exception) end with C or G. A…
