Hygrothermal effect on moisture kinetics and mechanical properties of hemp/polypropylene composite: Experimental and numerical studies

The exposition of thermoplastic composites reinforced with natural fibers to moisture and heat is likely to lower their mechanical properties and restrain their use in the design of parts. The present work is focussed on investigating the effects of hygrothermal aging on the mechanical behaviour of injected polypropylene reinforced with short hemp fibers. Moreover, the kinetic of isothermal moisture absorption has been studied for four immersion temperatures. The experimental results show that the time taken to reach saturation decreases significantly with increase in immersion temperature. The preparation and properties of polymer nanocomposites, obtained by melt-compounding of polypropylene (PP) and organomontmorillonite (OMMT) modified by different alkyl ammonium salts, are described. A copolymer of maleic anhydride and PP was used as a compatibilizing additive. Nanocomposites with OMMT content of 1, 5 and 10 wt% were prepared and tested. The influence of OMMT content on the tensile stress–strain curves, elastic modulus, yield and tensile strength, and ultimate elongation of the nanocomposites is determined. Functionalized siloxane‐silsesquioxane resins and polypropylene‐based composites: Morphological, structural, thermal, and mechanical properties

Non‐functionalized and n‐alkyl‐functionalized siloxane‐silsesquioxane resins (S4SQ) were synthesized and characterized to confirm their structure and properties. Polypropylene (PP) composites with S4SQ resins as fillers were prepared by the melt blending. The influence of the kinds and amounts of fillers on the structural, morphological and thermal properties as well as mechanical characteristics and processability was determined. High compatibility of composites with functionalized resins resulted in more homogenous dispersion of filler particles in comparison with the composites which contained a non‐functionalized resin. A study of spalling behaviour of PAN fibre-reinforced concrete by thermal analysis

Comparisons are made between polypropylene (PP) fibres and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres in order to relate the thermal properties of fibres with the respective fibre mortar behaviour under thermal exposure. Thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermochromatography (ThGC) are utilized. When a cementitious fibre mortar is being heated, several physical phenomena occur in the temperature range between 100°C and 200°C. There is a significant difference in the thermal behaviour between PP and PAN fibres. PP fibres melt at 160–170°C. Stiffness and strength of flax fiber/polymer matrix composites

Flax fiber composites with thermoset and thermoplastic polymer matrices have been manufactured and tested for stiffness and strength under uniaxial tension. Flax/polypropylene and flax/maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene composites are produced from compound obtained by coextrusion of granulated polypropylene and flax fibers, while flax fiber mat/vinylester and modified acrylic resin composites are manufactured by resin transfer molding. The applicability of rule-of-mixtures and orientational averaging based models, developed for short fiber composites, to flax reinforced polymers is considered. POLYM. A simple approach towards one-dimensional mesoporous carbon with superior electrochemical capacitive activity.

One-dimensional (1D) mesoporous carbons with highly ordered 3D interconnected pore structure and large-diameter pore size (10–20 nm) have been synthesized by a simple precursor-controlled thermolysis approach; such unique carbonaceous frameworks show superior capacitive behavior in electrochemical double-layer capacitors.

Templated synthesis of a large and flexible covalent porphyrinic cage bearing orthogonal recognition sites.

A large covalent cage incorporating two porphyrins attached by four long and flexible polyether chains each bearing two 3-pyridyl ligands was synthesized from a DABCO-templated olefin metathesis reaction. The X-ray structure of the cage with the DABCO coordinated inside the cavity to the two zinc(II) porphyrins reveals a highly symmetric structure.
