Oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane over NiO–CeO2 mixed oxides catalysts

2012

[EN] In this paper we present the synthesis, characterization and catalytic behaviour in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane of NiO-CeO2 mixed oxides. The addition of cerium oxide to NiO strongly modifies its catalytic performance, although the changes in the catalytic behaviour depend on the catalyst composition. The incorporation of low amounts of cerium oxide to NiO multiplies the productivity to ethylene in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane by a factor of ca. 7, which is the result of an increase in both catalytic activity and selectivity to ethylene. The enhanced activity has been related to the remarkable increase of the surface area of catalyst and the low crystal sizes of …

EXAFS study of ceria–lanthana-based TWC promoters prepared by sol–gel routes

2003

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments at the Ce K- and La K-edges were performed on ceria–lanthana–alumina three-way catalysts promoters prepared by sol–gel routes, in order to investigate the effect of lanthanum doping on the ceria structure. The formation of Ce1−xLaxO2−x/2 solid solution, already observed by X-ray diffraction, was confirmed by EXAFS analysis, while no experimental evidence of a Ce–Al interaction was found. In presence of cerium and aluminum, lanthanum is involved in the formation of solid solution with CeO2 and of La–Al compounds. When the La:Al molar ratio is sufficiently high, the growth of a tridimensionally ordered LaAlO3 perovskite compound is …

A comparison between photocatalytic and catalytic oxidation of 2-Propanol over Au/TiO2-CeO2 catalysts

2016

Abstract Photocatalytic and catalytic oxidation of 2-propanol, representative of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), were compared over mixed TiO 2 –CeO 2 -based catalysts. The effect of different amounts of CeO 2 and the presence of gold (1 wt%) on TiO 2 was investigated. In the photocatalytic oxidation CeO 2 had a negative effect on the performance towards the alcohol conversion of both TiO 2 –CeO 2 and Au/TiO 2 –CeO 2 catalysts, being Au/TiO 2 the most active system. On the contrary mixed TiO 2 –CeO 2 and Au/TiO 2 –CeO 2 samples showed a higher catalytic oxidation efficiency for 2-propanol conversion compared to the single oxides. In this case Au/CeO 2 catalyst had the best performance. …

Exploring the photothermo-catalytic performance of brookite tio2-ceo2 composites

2020

The thermocatalytic, photocatalytic and photothermo-catalytic oxidation of some volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 2-propanol, ethanol and toluene, was investigated over brookite TiO2-CeO2 composites. The multi-catalytic approach based on the synergistic effect between solar photocatalysis and thermocatalysis led to the considerable decrease in the conversion temperatures of the organic compounds. In particular, in the photothermo-catalytic runs, for the most active samples (TiO2-3 wt% CeO2 and TiO2-5 wt% CeO2), the temperature at which 90% of VOC conversion occurred was about 60 &deg

Electrosynthesis of Ce–Co Mixed Oxide Nanotubes with High Aspect Ratio and Tunable Composition

2008

Cerium oxide and cobalt oxides have attracted the interest of several researchers due to their potential application in several technological fields electrochromism, lithium batteries, catalysis, etc.. Ceria has been used as a promoter in the so-called “three-way catalyst” for the control of toxic emission from automobile exhaust. The promotion consists of the enhancement of the noble metal dispersion, as well as stabilization of the supporting medium toward thermal sintering. 1,2 A direct catalytic effect of CeO2 in chemical processes such as water–gas shift reaction or NOx decomposition has been also evidenced. 3,4

Platinum-doped CeO2 thin film catalysts prepared by magnetron sputtering.

2010

The interaction of Pt with CeO(2) layers was investigated by using photoelectron spectroscopy. The 30 nm thick Pt doped CeO(2) layers were deposited simultaneously by rf-magnetron sputtering on a Si(001) substrate, multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported by a carbon diffusion layer of a polymer membrane fuel cell and on CNTs grown on the silicon wafer by the CVD technique. The synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron spectra showed the formation of cerium oxide with completely ionized Pt(2+,4+) species, and with the Pt(2+)/Pt(4+) ratio strongly dependent on the substrate. The TEM and XRD study showed the Pt(2+)/Pt(4+) ratio is dependent on the film structure.

Growth and composition of nanostructured and nanoporous cerium oxide thin films on a graphite foil.

2015

The morphology and composition of CeOx films prepared by r.f. magnetron sputtering on a graphite foil have been investigated mainly by using microscopy methods. This study presents the formation of nanocrystalline layers with porous structure due to the modification of a carbon support and the formation of cerium carbide crystallites as a result of the deposition process. Chemical analyses of the layers with different thicknesses performed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have pointed to the reduction of the cerium oxide layers. In the deposited layers, cerium was present in mixed Ce(3+) and Ce(4+) valence. Ce(3+…

Pt–CeO thin film catalysts for PEMFC

2015

Abstract Platinum is the mostly used element in catalysts for fuel cell technology, but its high price limits large-scale applications. Platinum doped cerium oxide represents an alternative solution due to very low loading, typically few micrograms per 1 cm2, at the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) anode. High efficiency is achieved by using magnetron sputtering deposition of cerium oxide and Pt of 30 nm thick nanoporous films on large surface carbon nanoparticle substrates. Thin film techniques permits to grow the catalyst film characterized by highly dispersed platinum, mostly in ionic Pt2+ state. Such dispersed Pt species show high activity and stability. These new materials ma…

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell made of magnetron sputtered Pt–CeO and Pt–Co thin film catalysts

2015

Abstract Preparation of catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is of growing interest during last years. The magnetron sputtering technique is a promising method of catalyst preparation because it permits to synthesize catalysts in a fast and relatively less expensive way, however control of specific surface and durability of such catalysts still remains the main concern. We tested a single cell PEMFC catalyzed by using exclusively thin film approach by combining state-of-the art Pt-doped cerium oxide anode and a new Pt–Co alloy cathode. We have shown that beside very high mass activity of the catalysts relative to the membrane electrode assembly the catalyst nanoporous …

Mechanical performance of experimental acrylic resins modified by nanoparticles after chemical and mechanical degradation.

2020

Background Different materials have been incorporated into the polymethylmethacrylate matrix to improve its performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion (DC), the flexural strength (FS), the elasticity modulus (EM), and the effect of exposure to food-simulating liquids prior to brushing simulation on the gloss loss (GL) of experimental acrylic resins modified by nanoparticles. Material and methods Three different types of nanoparticles; silicon oxide (SiO2), cerium oxide (CeO2) and titanium oxide (TiO2) were added to a poly (methylmethacrylate) matrix, in proportions of 0.5wt%, 1wt% and 3wt% each, forming nine experimental groups. The acrylic resin was also te…
