Ceria/polymer nanocontainers for high-performance encapsulation of fluorophores
2019
We report the synthesis of high-performance organic–inorganic hybrid fluorescent nanocapsules comprising a polymer shell armored with an inorganic layer and a liquid core containing a fluorophore. The polymeric capsules are synthesized by free radical miniemulsion polymerization and contain covalently bound carboxylate surface functionalities that allow for the binding of metal ions through electrostatic interaction. A cerium(IV) oxide nanoparticle layer, formed in situ at the surface of the hybrid nanocapsules, acts as oxygen scavenger and keeps external reactive molecular oxygen from entering into the capsules, eventually resulting in a reduction of the photooxidation of encapsulated fluo…
Au/TiO2-CeO2 Catalysts for Photocatalytic Water Splitting and VOCs Oxidation Reactions
2016
Photocatalytic water splitting for H2 production and photocatalytic oxidation of 2-propanol, an example of volatile organic compounds, were investigated over TiO2 catalysts loaded with gold and/or ceria. In the water splitting reaction the presence of gold only slightly affected the performance of TiO2 whereas the presence of CeO2 had a more remarkable positive effect. In the 2-propanol oxidation Au/TiO2 was the most active sample in terms of alcohol conversion whereas Au/TiO2-CeO2 exhibited the highest CO2 yield. On the basis of characterization experiments (X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis EDX, surface area measurements, Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) and …
Cerium oxyhydroxide nanowire growth via electrogeneration of base in nonaqueous electrolytes
2008
The preparation of compact cerium oxyhydroxide nanowires into anodic alumina membranes from cerium chloride in ethanol solution via electrogeneration of base is reported. Scanning electron microscopy analyses indicate that dense, well-aligned, and highly ordered nanowires can be formed in a wide range of applied potentials and current densities in alcoholic solution. The employment of water brings to a hybrid nanotube/nanowire structure, suggesting a key role of the electrolyte nature in determining the morphology of the deposit. Electrochemical findings and X-ray diffraction analysis have shown that nanowires are constituted by a Ce(III)/Ce(IV) oxyhydroxide that can be completely oxidized …
High activity mesoporous copper doped cerium oxide catalysts for the total oxidation of polyaromatic hydrocarbon pollutants
2012
The doping of mesoporous ceria with copper significantly enhances activity for naphthalene total oxidation, the enhanced performance is controlled by the increased concentration of surface oxygen defects.
Economical aspects, toxicity, and environmental fate of cerium oxide
2020
Abstract The present chapter reports some economical aspects of the cerium oxide market. Porter’s and PESTEL analyses have been used to evidence the strengths and weaknesses of the ceria market, along with the potentiality and opportunities within the years to come. The wide use of CeO2 nanoparticles in many applications requires to consider also issues related to their toxicity and environmental fate. In this regard, some contradictory reports in the relevant literature have been surveyed, thus highlighting the need for further and detailed investigation on these topics in order to propose effective strategies of risk assessment and environmental remediation.
Effects of redox treatments on the structural composition of a ceria–zirconia oxide for application in the three-way catalysis
2003
Abstract The influence of calcination and redox cycles on the structural modification and redox properties of a ceria–zirconia mixed oxide of nominal composition Ce 0.6 Zr 0.4 O 2 were investigated by XRD and Rietveld refinement, by BET measurement, TPR and OSC analyses. The material is characterized by high total OSC and retains this property after several redox and calcination cycles up to 1273 K, despite the loss of porosity and the decrease of surface area. The Rietveld analysis of the diffractograms allowed to establish that at least two solid solutions are present in the as-prepared sample: a cubic phase, space group Fm-3m, richer in cerium compared to the nominal composition, a tetra…
Antioxidant activity of cerium dioxide nanoparticles and nanorods in scavenging hydroxyl radicals
2019
Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) have been shown to exhibit antioxidant capabilities, but their efficiency in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. In this study, cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) and nanorods (CeNRs) were found to exhibit much stronger scavenging activity than ·OH generation in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and surrogate lung fluid (SLF). The larger surface area and higher defect density of CeNRs may lead to higher ·OH scavenging activity than for CeNPs. These insights are important to understand the redox activity of cerium nanomaterials and provide clues to the role of CeNPs in biological and environmen…
The influence of cerium to urea preparation ratio of nanocrystalline ceria catalysts for the total oxidation of naphthalene
2008
The influence of cerium salt/urea ratio on the activity of nanocrystalline ceria catalysts prepared by homogeneous precipitation with urea for the complete oxidation of naphthalene has been evaluated. Ceria catalysts were prepared from five different cerium salt/urea ratios (2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4). Catalyst characterization (by BET, XRD and TPR) only revealed subtle differences in the characteristics of these catalysts with cerium salt to urea ratio. However, Raman and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated differences in the oxygen defect concentration (FWHM of Raman band) and morphology of the catalysts with variation of the preparation ratio. Catalysts prepared with 2:…
Promoting the activity and selectivity of high surface area Ni–Ce–O mixed oxides by gold deposition for VOC catalytic combustion
2011
Gold supported on nickel cerium oxide catalysts (Ni–Ce–O) have been studied for the total oxidation of propane, as a model for hydrocarbon volatile organic compound emission control. High surface area Ni–Ce–O catalysts were synthesized using a very simple evaporation method, where cerium and nickel salts were evaporated in the presence of a mixture of methanol and oxalic acid. Gold catalysts were prepared following a deposition–precipitation method. A very efficient catalyst for the oxidation of propane, in terms of both activity and selectivity, was obtained. This high activity has been related to the high surface area of the catalyst (and therefore to the presence of more active sites ava…
