High efficiency of Pt2+ - CeO2 novel thin film catalyst as anode for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

2016

Abstract The elevated price of Pt limits the large-scale implementation of commercial proton exchange membrane fuel cells, which effectively convert chemical energy into electricity. In order to increase the cost-efficiency in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells, we have designed a family of novel anode catalysts consisting of thin films of ceria with low Pt loadings sputtered on a nanostructured carbon support. Remarkably, only such small amounts of Pt are necessary for achieving power density values comparable to the reference commercial catalysts, which results in excellent specific activities of our samples. By combining photoelectron spectroscopy and catalytic performance analysis, we …

Growth of nano-porous Pt-doped cerium oxide thin films on glassy carbon substrate

2013

Abstract Glassy carbon (GC) substrates were treated by the oxygen plasma over several periods of time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) study showed the dramatic influence of oxygen plasma on the morphology of glassy carbon. The treatment leads to the formation of nanostructured surface, which consists of well separated rod-like nanostructures oriented perpendicularly to the substrate surface. The surface roughness was found to increase with increasing treatment time. By using magnetron co-sputtering of platinum and cerium oxide we can prepare oxide layers continuously doped with Pt atoms during the growth. This tec…

Preparation of magnetron sputtered thin cerium oxide films with a large surface on silicon substrates using carbonaceous interlayers.

2013

The study focuses on preparation of thin cerium oxide films with a porous structure prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on a silicon wafer substrate using amorphous carbon (a-C) and nitrogenated amorphous carbon films (CNx) as an interlayer. We show that the structure and morphology of the deposited layers depend on the oxygen concentration in working gas used for cerium oxide deposition. Considerable erosion of the carbonaceous interlayer accompanied by the formation of highly porous carbon/cerium oxide bilayer systems is reported. Etching of the carbon interlayer with oxygen species occurring simultaneously with cerium oxide film growth is considered to be the driving force for this effec…

MOCVD growth of porous cerium oxide thin films on silicon substrate

2015

Abstract Porous cerium oxide thin films were grown by pulsed direct liquid injection metal organic chemical vapor deposition (DLI-MOCVD) on silicon substrate, using cerium tetrakis (1-methoxy-2-methyl-2-propanolate) dissolved in cyclohexane as precursor as well as oxygen as oxidant agent. The chemical and morphological characteristics of the films were investigated by XPS, SEM and TEM. The influence of the growth conditions on the morphological features of the thin films and the cerium chemical states are reported and discussed. The decrease of the oxygen and/or alkoxide flow rate induces the decrease of both the film thickness and the porosity of the layer. Moreover, the growth of silicate…

The catalytic performance of mesoporous cerium oxides prepared through a nanocasting route for the total oxidation of naphthalene

2010

Cerium oxides have been prepared by nanocasting of a mesoporous siliceous KIT-6. Through this synthesis method a partially ordered mesoporous structure, as demonstrated by several characterization techniques (N2 adsorption, XRD and HRTEM) has been obtained. Accordingly, very high surface areas have been achieved (up to 163 m2/g), despite using high calcination temperatures (550 °C). We have demonstrated that the aging temperature of the siliceous template is of outstanding importance, as this parameter is directly responsible for both the pore size and the surface area of the catalysts. In addition, whilst a low preparation temperature (40 °C) makes the further removal of the silica templat…

The influence of various synthesis methods on the catalytic activity of cerium oxide in one-pot synthesis of diethyl carbonate starting from CO2, eth…

2013

Different synthesis methods such as homogeneous precipitation at room temperature and supercritical water (T > 647 K and P > 22.1 MPa) were employed for cerium oxide preparation. Additionally, deposition of ceria on silica mesoporous material, SBA-15, was carried out. The obtained materials were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and CO2 temperature programmed desorption. Considerable variations in physico-chemical properties of the resulting materials were observed. The catalytic activities of pristine cerium oxide and ceria loaded on SBA-15 support were…

Photocatalytic and photothermocatalytic applications of cerium oxide-based materials

2020

Abstract Cerium dioxide (CeO2) presents unique properties as the special electronic and optical properties of the 4f electrons, the capacity to form nonstoichiometric oxygen-deficient CeO2 − x oxides, the high oxygen mobility, and the reversible transformation between Ce4 + and Ce3 + that make it interesting for photocatalytic applications. CeO2 is a wide bandgap semiconductor (3.0–3.4 eV), but different approaches as combination with oxides, deposition of noble metals, doping with metal and nonmetal species, and the formation of surface defects have been adopted to extend its absorption towards the visible region with the aim to improve its photocatalytic performance. Cerium oxide-based ma…

Assessing the Electrochemical Performance of Different Nanostructured CeO2 Samples as Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

2021

In this work, six samples of CeO2 are successfully prepared by diverse synthesis routes leading to different microstructures regarding both morphology and particle size. The structural and microstructural characteristics presented by the samples and their influence on the electrochemical response of the prepared anodes are analyzed. In particular, the Ce-CMK3 sample, synthesized from a mesoporous carbon obtained through a CMK3 silica template, displays an enhanced electrochemical response. Thus, capacity values of ~220 mA h g−1 are obtained at a current rate of 0.155 A g−1 after 50 cycles and an excellent cyclability at intermediate current densities. On the other hand, it is observed that …
