Risk factors of oral candidosis: a twofold approach of study by fuzzy logic and traditional statistic.
2007
Abstract Objective To assess a panel of risk factors associated to oral candidosis (OC) onset and its chronic maintenance by means of fuzzy logic (FL) approach and statistical traditional methodology (STM); to investigate their casual relationship within a multifactorial framework. Design Case–control study. Setting One hospital-based clinic. Patients Eighty-nine patients with OC infection microbiologically diagnosed and 98 healthy subjects were consecutively recruited. Outcome measurements Anamnestic and clinical evaluations for OC, microbiological assessment (i.e. culture, CFU/mL counting and identification) were performed. The commonest predisposing factors for OC onset and its chronic s…
High-Frequency Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Motor Cortex of Patients Affected by Migraine With Aura: A Way to Restore Normal Cortical Excitab…
2009
We showed reduced motor intracortical inhibition (ICI) and paradoxical increase of intracortical facilitation (ICF) to 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in patients affected by migraine with aura (MA). In conditions of enhanced excitability due to a reduced inhibition, high-frequency rTMS was found to potentiate intracortical inhibition. Here we explored the conditioning effects of high-frequency priming stimulation of motor cortex with the aim of normalizing excitability reverting paradoxical facilitation by 1 Hz rTMS in MA. Nine patients with MA and nine healthy controls underwent a paired-pulse TMS paradigm to evaluate motor intracortical excitability (ICI and ICF…
VITAMIN K-INDUCED MODIFICATION OF COAGULATION PHENOTYPE IN VKORC1 HOMOZYGOUS DEFICIENCY
2008
Summary. Background: Combined vitamin K-dependent clotting factor (VKCF) deficiency type 2 (VKCFD2) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by mutated vitamin K 2,3-epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1) gene. Methods and results: An Italian patient with moderate to severe bleeding tendency was genotyped, and found to be homozygous for the unique VKORC1 mutation (Arg98Trp) so far detected in VKCFD2. The activity levels of VKCFs were differentially reduced, and inversely related to the previously estimated affinity of procoagulant factor propeptides for the γ-carboxylase. The normal (factor IX) or reduced antigen levels (other VKCFs) produced a gradient in specific activities. Vitamin K su…
Cytotoxic Activity and Composition of Petroleum Ether Extract from Magydaris tomentosa (Desf.) W. D. J. Koch (Apiaceae)
2015
The petroleum ether extract of Magydaris tomentosa flowers (Desf.) W. D. J. Koch has been analyzed by GC-MS. It is mainly constituted by furanocoumarins such as xanthotoxin, xanthotoxol, isopimpinellin, and bergaptene. Other coumarins such as 7-methoxy-8-(2-formyl-2-methylpropyl) coumarin and osthole also occurred. The antiproliferative activity of Magydaris tomentosa flower extract has been evaluated in vitro on murine monocye/macrophages (J774A.1), human melanoma (A375) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) tumor cell lines, showing a major activity against the latter.

Stimulated Raman and Cars Spectroscopy of ν1 and 2ν2 (A1) Bands of 12CF4
1994
Two experimental coherent Raman techniques, stimulated Raman and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), were employed to study the Raman spectrum of CF 4 in the 900 cm −1 region. The stimulated Raman and CARS spectra of the ν 1 band of CF 4 were recorded at high resolution. The analysis of these spectra enabled some spectroscopic constants of this band to be refined and higher order constants to be determined for the first time. The first high-resolution CARS spectrum of the 2ν 2 (A 1 ) harmonic band is also presented. The rotational transitions of this band up to J = 40 were assigned and the first set of spectroscopic constants for this sub-level were determined. These results imp…
Anti-cancer activity of di- and tri-organotin(IV) compounds with D-(+)-Galacturonic acid on human tumor cells
2018
Abstract We have compared the anti-proliferative activity in vitro, of R2SnGala (1-3) [R = Me, n-Bu, Ph] and novel R3SnGala (4, 5) [R = Me, n-Bu] with D-(+)-Galacturonic acid [HGala; Galaq-, q = (2) and (1) for R2SnGala and R3SnGala, respectively] compounds, towards human tumor cell lines of intestinal carcinoma (HCT-116) and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7). The new synthesized 4 and 5 compounds were characterized, in solution, by 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR, that showed that HGala acts as monoanionic moiety and evidenced the dynamic behavior of the compounds, due to inter-conversions involving the anomeric carbon atom of the ligand. Cell viability, apoptosis induction and cell cycle distribution w…
Folate-targeted supramolecular vesicular aggregates as a new frontier for effective anticancer treatment in in vivo model.
2012
Abstract Supramolecular vesicular aggregates (SVAs), made up by self-assembling liposomes and polyasparthydrazide co-polymers conjugated to folic acid molecules were extensively investigated in this manuscript as potential active targeting formulation for anticancer drug delivery. Folate-targeted systems (FT-SVAs) were used to treat breast cancer and to further proof the potential in vivo administration of these systems for the therapeutic treatment for several aggressive solid tumors. The physicochemical and technological parameters of FT-SVAs are suitable for their potential in vivo administration. The chemotherapeutic activity of GEM-loaded FT-SVAs was increased during in vivo experiment…
PTEN Mediates the Antioxidant Effect of Resveratrol at Nutritionally Relevant Concentrations
2014
Introduction.Antioxidant properties of resveratrol have been intensively studied for the last years, bothin vivoandin vitro. Its bioavailability after an oral dose is very low and therefore it is very important to make sure that plasma concentrations of free resveratrol are sufficient enough to be active as antioxidant.Aims.In the present study, using nutritionally relevant concentrations of resveratrol, we aim to confirm its antioxidant capacity on reducing peroxide levels and look for the molecular pathway involved in this antioxidant effect.Methods.We used mammary gland tumor cells (MCF-7), which were pretreated with different concentrations of resveratrol for 48 h, and/or a PTEN inhibit…
Predicting Outcome of Aortic Dissection with Patent False Lumen by Computational Flow Analysis
2014
Although Type B aortic dissection (AoD) has better in-hospital survival than Type A AoD, the short- and long term outcome for patients remains challenging, with 50–80% deaths at 5-years. Dissection-related complications include rapid aortic expansion, impending rupture, and malperfusion syndromes. We aimed to assess hemodynamic implications of patients with patent false lumen (FL) of dissected aorta. Computational fluid dynamic analyses were performed on patient-specific aortic geometries reconstructed from computed tomography scans of 25 patients with AoDs, who were admitted in our hospital from 2007 to 2013. We used the development of acute complications and chronic aneurysmal evolution a…
