The vanilloid receptor 1 (VR1) is a heat-activated cation channel which also responds to capsaicin and other chemical stimuli. Protein kinase C has a stimulatory effect on VR1 activity, either alone or after activation with capsaicin. The influence of the cAMP-signaling pathway on the effects of capsaicin is controversial. To clarify this, the actions of capsaicin and the modulatory effects of forskolin, pCPT-cAMP, and isobutylmethylxanthine were studied in <i>Xenopus laevis</i> oocytes expressing rat VR1 and in CHO cells expressing human VR1. Seven hundred adolescents (Chinese = 50%; South Asian ethnic minority = 50%) with mean age of 15.3 years (SD = 1.53). Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis was performed to assess measurement invariance of the MSPSS scale across Chinese and South Asian ethnic minority samples. Results show that the original three-factor structure of the MSPSS was supported in both samples. Measurement invariance was supported in terms of configural, metric, and partial scalar invariance. Abstract The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) dibenzo[a, l]pyrene (DB[a, l]P) has been found to be an environmental pollutant and, considering the available data from rodent bioassays, it represents the most carcinogenic member compound of the class of PAH yet discovered. To sort out the contribution of individual cytochromes P450 (P450) in the metabolic activation of this PAH, V79 cells stably expressing a single P450 isoform were treated with DB[a, l]P or enantiomeric DB[a, l]P-11,12-dihydrodiols (diols). In two visual ERP studies, we investigated whether Mandarin Chinese shows a subject-preference in spite of the controversial status of grammatical relations in this language. We compared ERP responses at the position of the verb and the second NP in object-verb-subject (OVS) and subject-verb-object (SVO) structures. While SVO is the basic word order in Chinese and OV with subject-drop is possible, OVS is strongly dispreferred. The high poaching rate of rhinoceros may drive these species into extinction within the coming decades.
