Role of p27Kip1 as a transcriptional regulator
2018
The protein p27Kip1 is a member of the Cip/Kip family of cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) inhibitors. It interacts with both the catalytic and the regulatory subunit (cyclin) and introduces a region into the catalytic cleave of the Cdk inducing its inactivation. Its inhibitory capacity can be modulated by specific tyrosine phosphorylations. p27Kip1 also behaves as a transcriptional regulator. It associates with specific chromatin domains through different transcription factors. ChIP on chip, ChIP-seq and expression microarray analysis allowed the identification of the transcriptional programs regulated by p27Kip1. Thus, important cellular functions as cell division cycle, respiration, RNA proc…
New insights on water buffalo genomic diversity and post-domestication migration routes from medium density SNP chip data
2018
Made available in DSpace on 2018-12-11T16:52:11Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-03-02 The domestic water buffalo is native to the Asian continent but through historical migrations and recent importations, nowadays has a worldwide distribution. The two types of water buffalo, i.e., river and swamp, display distinct morphological and behavioral traits, different karyotypes and also have different purposes and geographical distributions. River buffaloes from Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Mozambique, Brazil and Colombia, and swamp buffaloes from China, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Brazil were genotyped with a species-specific medium-dens…

Hunter-gatherers living in Europe during the transition from the late Pleistocene to the Holocene intensified food acquisition by broadening the range of resources exploited to include marine taxa. However, little is known on the nature of this dietary change in the Mediterranean Basin. A key area to investigate this issue is the archipelago of the Egadi Islands, most of which were connected to Sicily until the early Holocene. The site of Grotta d’Oriente, on the present-day island of Favignana, was occupied by hunter-gatherers when Postglacial environmental changes were taking place (14,000-7,500 cal BP). Here we present the results of AMS radiocarbon dating, palaeogenetic and isotopic ana…

Prevalence of Parkinson's disease and other types of parkinsonism in the Aeolian Archipelago, Sicily.
2007
Abstract Objective To estimate prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other types of parkinsonism in the Aeolian Archipelago, Sicily. Methods We studied the frequency of PD and other types of parkinsonism in the Aeolian Archipelago (population 13,431). All potential cases were identified from available medical information sources. To ensure the completeness of the case-findings, a screening questionnaire was also mailed to residents aged 40 years and over. Subjects were considered prevalent if they fulfilled the SNES diagnostic criteria for PD, on prevalence day (January 1, 2001). Results We identified 17 patients with parkinsonism from medical sources, and 4 from mail-survey. Prevalenc…
Is ovarian stimulation detrimental to the endometrium?
2007
Ovarian stimulation in assisted reproduction technology produces lower implantation rates per embryo transferred than natural and ovum donation cycles, suggesting suboptimal endometrial development due to the abnormal concentrations of hormones used to recruit more oocytes. After the publication of several studies on the gene expression profile of endometrial receptivity in the natural cycle using microarray technology, researchers have investigated the impact of ovarian stimulation on the gene expression pattern of the endometrium. Ovarian stimulation cycles that use gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists and antagonists have been analysed in detail during the window of implantati…
Current air quality analytics and monitoring: a review.
2014
This review summarizes the different tools and concepts that are commonly applied in air quality monitoring. The monitoring of atmosphere is extremely important as the air quality is an important problem for large communities. Main requirements for analytical devices used for monitoring include a long period of autonomic operation and portability. These instruments, however, are often characterized by poor analytical performance. Monitoring networks are the most common tools used for monitoring, so large-scale monitoring programmes are summarized here. Biomonitoring, as a cheap and convenient alternative to traditional sample collection, is becoming more and more popular, although its main …
Chemotherapy-induced antitumor immunity requires formyl peptide receptor 1.
2015
How dying tumor cells get noticed Besides killing tumor cells directly, some chemotherapies, such as anthracyclines, also activate the immune system to kill tumors. Vacchelli et al. discovered that in mice, anthracycline-induced antitumor immunity requires immune cells to express the protein formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1). Dendritic cells (DCs) near tumors expressed especially high amounts of FPR1. DCs normally capture fragments of dying tumor cells and use them to activate nearby T cells to kill tumors, but DCs lacking FPR1 failed to do this effectively. Individuals with breast or colon cancer expressing a variant of FPR1 and treated with anthracyclines showed poor metastasis-free and ov…
La prehistoria de Ibiza y Formentera: estado actual de la investigación
1988
The study of the prehistory of Ibiza and Formentera, the two small islands that form the Pityussae sub-group within the Balearic archipelago, began a few years ago as a consequence of the discovery and excavation of the megalithic chamber tomb of a Ca Na Costa on Formentera. Before then, prehistorians were still in doubt as to whether these islands had been occupied before the Phoenician colonisation. Many sites have come to light in the last decade, allowing us to present for the first time a general survey of the prehistoric settlement of the islands. Nevertheless, many problems are still unsolved, and new excavations are needed to establish the apparently complex cultural sequence, which…
Support Tool for the Combined Software/Hardware Design of On-Chip ELM Training for SLFF Neural Networks
2016
Typically, hardware implemented neural networks are trained before implementation. Extreme learning machine (ELM) is a noniterative training method for single-layer feed-forward (SLFF) neural networks well suited for hardware implementation. It provides fixed-time learning and simplifies retraining of a neural network once implemented, which is very important in applications demanding on-chip training. This study proposes the data flow of a software support tool in the design process of a hardware implementation of on-chip ELM learning for SLFF neural networks. The software tool allows the user to obtain the optimal definition of functional and hardware parameters for any application, and e…
