Paleobiology and paleobiogeography of sclerorhynchid sawfishes (Chondrichthyes, Batomorphii)

Sclerorhynchid sawfishes are a monophyletic group of Cretaceous selachians. They resemble modern sawfishes in the outer morphology and by having a hypertrophic rostral cartilage armed with lateral rows of spines. Generally, sclerorhynchid sawfishes were inhabitants of warm, shallow tropical and subtropical marine environments. Teeth of the oldest sclerorhynchid sawfishes from Spain are presented. They belong to Onchopristis Stromer and come from the lower Barrernian of eastern Spain. The paleobiology and paleogeographic pattern of sclerorhynchid sawfishes is reviewed and discussed.

Multiple overseas dispersal in amphibians

Amphibians are thought to be unable to disperse over ocean barriers because they do not tolerate the osmotic stress of salt water. Their distribution patterns have therefore generally been explained by vicariance biogeography. Here, we present compelling evidence for overseas dispersal of frogs in the Indian Ocean region based on the discovery of two endemic species on Mayotte. This island belongs to the Comoro archipelago, which is entirely volcanic and surrounded by sea depths of more than 3500 m. The Relapsing Polychondritis Disease Activity Index: Development of a disease activity score for relapsing polychondritis.

Abstract Objective The rarity of relapsing polychondritis (RP) has hindered the development of standardized tools for clinical assessment. Here, we describe the development of a preliminary score for disease assessing activity in RP, the Relapsing Polychondritis Disease Activity Index (RPDAI). Methods Twenty-seven RP experts participated in an international collaboration. Selection and definition of items for disease activity were established by consensus during a 4-round internet-based Delphi survey. Abstract Ca, Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) often contain numerous refractory metal nuggets (RMNs), consisting of elements like Os, Ir, Mo, Pt and Ru. The nuggets are usually thought to have formed by equilibrium condensation from a gas of solar composition, simultaneously with or prior to oxide and silicate minerals. Composition and clues to the origin of refractory metal nuggets extracted from chondritic meteorites

Refractory metal nuggets (RMNs) contain elements, such as Os, Ir, Mo, and Ru, which are predicted to condense from a cooling gas of solar composition simultaneously with CAI-minerals. Berg et al. (2009) identified a large number of RMNs in acid-resistant residues of the Murchison meteorite and suggested that they are pristine condensates. In extending the work of these authors, we have improved the chemical extraction process to enrich the concentration of RMNs in the residue sample and prepared three additional RMN-rich residues from the chondritic meteorites Murchison, Allende, and Leoville.
