A mitochondrial antigen-antibody system in cholestatic liver disease detected by radioimmunoassay.

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) was established for the detection of antimitochondrial autoantibodies (AMAs) in patient sera. AMAs were detected by RIA in 12 of 14 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and in 3 of 29 patients with chronic active hepatitis. AMAs were detected by indirect immunofluorescence in all sera positive by RIA. In addition, two patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and one patient with chronic active hepatitis were AMA positive when tested by indirect immunofluorescence, but negative when tested by RIA. We report the evaluation of oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) in a large northern German family, which can be traced back six generations and is unrelated to French-Canadian families. The symptoms in this family start at about 50 years of age and include dysphagia, bilateral ptosis, and in some cases a slowly progressive atrophy and weakness of other extraocular, facial or limb girdle muscles. The question of whether hypochondriasis (HYP) should be considered a somatoform disorder (SFD) or classified as an anxiety disorder (ANX) has recently been raised. To empirically provide information on this issue, we compared patients with HYP (n = 65) with those with other SFDs (n = 94) and those with ANX (n = 224) regarding sociodemographic and biographical variables, general psychopathology, and naturalistic cognitive-behavioral therapy treatment effects. Nine cases of space-occupying lesions of the sacral bone are presented. The problems of the clinical diagnosis, which in many cases comes too late, are discussed together with the indications for surgical treatment in this special group of tumours.
