Ground and excited state properties of polyamine chains bearing two terminal naphthalene units

A series of compounds bearing two naphthalene units linked through methylene groups to both ends of different open-chain polyamines has been investigated. The fluorescence emission studies show the presence of an excimer species whose formation depends on the protonation state and length of the polyamine chains and implies the existence of a bending movement in the excited state allowing the two naphthalene units to approach and interact. This interpretation was clearly proven by time-resolved fluorescence with the appearance of double exponential decays with a rise time observed at the excimer emission wavelength. A properly designed pyrene-capped CdSe/ZnS nanohybrid can act as a three-channel fluorescent sensor due to the independent emission of the pyrene monomer and excimer as well as that of the nanoparticle. As proof of principle, it was tested for a simple and rapid quantification of TNT in the presence of interferents of the same chemical family.

Two new fluorescent macrocyclic structures bearing two naphthalene (Np) units at both ends of a cyclic polyaminic chain were investigated with potentiometric, fluorescence (steady-state and time-resolved) and laser flash photolysis techniques. The formation constants of the binary complexes Cu(CM)2+ and Cu(CM) 2 2+ as well as those of the ternary complexes Cu(CM)L + and Cu(CM)2 L + (CM=Cimetidine=N-Cyano-N′-methyl-N″[(5-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyltioethyl]-guanidine; HL=Phenobarbital=5-ethyl-5-phenyl-barbituric acid) have been determined in 0.1 and 1.0 mol dm−3 NaClO4 methanol solutions at 25±0.2°C. The values of logX, log βstat.., and Δ logK confirm the stability of the ternary complexes.

Pyrene-Capped CdSe@ZnS Nanoparticles as Sensitive Flexible Oxygen Sensors in Non-Aqueous Media**

A flexible, highly sensitive sensor of oxygen in non-aqueous solvents is described. It consists of CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles decorated with a considerable number of pyrene units, thus making the formation of the pyrene excimer possible. The emission of the pyrene excimer and that of the nanoparticle are suitably separated from each other and also from the excitation wavelength. This sensor can be applied as a ratiometric oxygen sensor by using the linear response of the pyrene excimer lifetime combined with the linear response of the nanoparticle excited state lifetime. Severe gingival overgrowth is one of the most frequent side effects in renal transplant patients associated with assumption of cyclosporine A. Several associations with age, sex, dosage, duration of therapy or interval since transplantation have been hypothesized.
