Environmental effects on the covariation among pace-of-life traits

2019

Pace‐of‐life syndromes (POLSs) are suites of life‐history, physiological and behavioural traits that arise due to trade‐offs between allocation to current and future reproduction. Traits generally show covariation that can arise from genetic and environmental influences on phenotypes and constrain the independent evolution of traits, resulting in fitness consequences and impacts on population dynamics. The notion that correlations among traits may vary among populations along environmental gradients suggests an important role for the environment in shaping and maintaining POLSs. However, no synthesis has been attempted of the myriad ways in which environmental factors should influence POLSs…

The Effects of Transcutaneous Spinal Direct Current Stimulation on Neuropathic Pain in Multiple Sclerosis: Clinical and Neurophysiological Assessment

2019

Background: Central neuropathic pain represents one of the most common symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS) and it seriously affects quality of life. Spinal mechanisms may contribute to the pathogenesis of neuropathic pain in MS. Converging evidence from animal models and neurophysiological and clinical studies in humans suggests a potential effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tc-DCS) on neuropathic pain. Spinal application of DCS, i.e., transcutaneous spinal DCS (ts-DCS), may modulate nociception through inhibition of spinal reflexes. Therefore, ts-DCS could represents an effective, safe and well-tolerated treatment for neuropathic pain in MS, a largely unexplored topic. This…

2015

This article aims at highlighting the signs of transparency and opacity in gastronomic communication. The esthesic, aesthetic and ethical dimension will be considered through discursive and visual elements put at stake in the presentation of dishes so that their flavours as well as the sensations and emotions they produce will fully come out. It will illustrate the interactions between the creative chef and the guest who will feel sensations, each of them asserting the construction of their identity. Gastronomic semiotics will be considered as socio-semiotics, which takes into account aesthetic values of today's society and also accounts for the complexity of senses.

‘Seeing the Dark’: Grounding Phenomenal Transparency and Opacity in Precision Estimation for Active Inference

2018

One of the central claims of the Self-model Theory of Subjectivity is that the experience of being someone - even in a minimal form - arises through a transparent phenomenal self-model, which itself can in principle be reduced to brain processes. Here, we consider whether it is possible to distinguish between phenomenally transparent and opaque states in terms of active inference. We propose a relationship of phenomenal opacity to expected uncertainty or precision; i.e., the capacity for introspective attention and implicit mental action. Thus we associate introspective attention with the deployment of 'precision' that may render the perceptual evidence (for action) opaque, while treating t…

2008

This research aims to find the impact of the network shape and structure on the urban mobilities, in order to fight against the automobile dependency and to include the externalities in the network design. Three examples illustrate this objective. The first one shows the influence of the network shape on the pedestrian urban flows. The second one emphasizes how sensitive to the network structure is the efficiency of a very flexible Demand Responsive Transport. The third example demonstrates that the network metric is favourable to the automobile and how it can be possible to apply an alternative metric, called the “slow metric” to reduce the urban sprawling and the automobile dependency.

Moving around the Philippines

2012

International audience; Visitors to Manila are quickly aware of the traffic jams and impediments to efficient transport within the capital region of the Philippines. Hours seem to be lost in traffic, and public transportation is very crowded. What are the reasons for these difficulties? Poor planning, lack of enforcement of the rules of circulation, an excessive rate of motorization, an insufficient development of quality public transit? What should be the role of "informal" transport (trisikel, pedicab, jeepneys) in a system of mobilities that should remain fair to all, rich and poor alike? The same set of questions arises for the mobility across the country. As an archipelago, and a count…
