Die dynamische 31-Phosphor-Magnetresonanz-Spektroskopie des M. quadriceps: Einfluß von Geschlecht und Alter auf spektroskopische Parameter

1999

PURPOSE 31P-MRS is used to assess the influence of sex und age on quadriceps muscle metabolism before and after exercise. MATERIALS AND METHODS 32 healthy volunteers (15 women, 17 men, mean age: 38 +/- 17 yrs.) were examined by dynamic phosphorus-31 (31P) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). In the magnet, the quadriceps muscle was stressed by an isometric und an isotonic form of exercise until exhaustion, respectively. RESULTS Resting conditions: With increasing subjects' age, the ratio beta-adenosine triphosphate/total phosphate decreased (r = -0.37; p = 0.02). With increasing subjects' age, the ratios inorganic phosphate/phosphocreatine (r = 0.79; p = 5 x 10(-8), phosphomonoester/beta-…

Failure mode and effects analysis of skin electronic brachytherapy using Esteya® unit

2016

Purpose: Esteya® (Nucletron, an Elekta company, Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) is an electronic brachytherapy device used for skin cancer lesion treatment. In order to establish an adequate level of quality of treatment, a risk analysis of the Esteya treatment process has been done, following the methodology proposed by the TG-100 guidelines of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). Material and methods: A multidisciplinary team familiar with the treatment process was formed. This team developed a process map (PM) outlining the stages, through which a patient passed when subjected to the Esteya treatment. They identified potential failure modes (FM) and each individual FM…

Radiologists' leading position in image-guided therapy

2013

Image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are related to, or performed under, some kind of imaging. Such imaging may be direct inspection (as in open surgery) or indirect inspection as in endoscopy or laparoscopy. Common to all these techniques is the transformation of optical and visible information to a monitor or the eye of the operator. Image-guided therapy (IGT) differs by using processed imaging data acquired before, during and after a wide range of different imaging techniques. This means that the planning, performing and monitoring, as well as the control of the therapeutic procedure, are based and dependent on the "virtual reality" provided by imaging investigations. Since…

New susceptibility locus for coronary artery disease on chromosome 3q22.3

2009

We present a three-stage analysis of genome-wide SNP data in 1,222 German individuals with myocardial infarction and 1,298 controls, in silico replication in three additional genome-wide datasets of coronary artery disease (CAD) and subsequent replication in approximately 25,000 subjects. We identified one new CAD risk locus on 3q22.3 in MRAS (P = 7.44 x 10(-13); OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.11-1.19), and suggestive association with a locus on 12q24.31 near HNF1A-C12orf43 (P = 4.81 x 10(-7); OR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.05-1.11).

Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging for focal liver lesions: bridging the gap between research and clinical practice

2021

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is highly important for the detection, characterization, and follow-up of focal liver lesions. Several quantitative MRI-based methods have been proposed in addition to qualitative imaging interpretation to improve the diagnostic work-up and prognostics in patients with focal liver lesions. This includes DWI with apparent diffusion coefficient measurements, intravoxel incoherent motion, perfusion imaging, MR elastography, and radiomics. Multiple research studies have reported promising results with quantitative MRI methods in various clinical settings. Nevertheless, applications in everyday clinical practice are limited. This review describes the basic princ…

Association between preoperative evaluation with lung ultrasound and outcome in frail elderly patients undergoing orthopedic surgery for hip fracture…

2021

Abstract Background Hip fracture is one of the most common orthopedic causes of hospital admission in frail elderly patients. Hip fracture fixation in this class of patients is considered a high-risk procedure. Preoperative physical examination, plasma natriuretic peptide levels (BNP, Pro-BNP), and cardiovascular scoring systems (ASA-PS, RCRI, NSQIP-MICA) have all been demonstrated to underestimate the risk of postoperative complications. We designed a prospective multicenter observational study to assess whether preoperative lung ultrasound examination can predict better postoperative events thanks to the additional information they provide in the form of “indirect” and “direct” cardiac an…

Changes in the Spectral Characteristics of Ventricular Fibrillation in Lesions Produced by Radiofrequency Ablation. An Experimental Study

2008

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Although electro- physiological databases contain information about changes in the time domain in lesions produced by radiofrequency ablation, very few data on changes in the frequency domain are available. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the spectral characteristics of ventricular fibrillation in zones with radiofrequency lesions. METHODS Recordings of ventricular fibrillation were obtained in 11 isolated perfused rabbit heart preparations using a multiple epicardial electrode located on the left ventricular free wall. Spectral parameters derived by Fourier analysis before and after the creation of transmural radiofrequency lesions were compa…

Stafnea(TM)s bone defect in a metastatic prostate cancer patient: A diagnostic conundrum

2018

Stafne’s bone defect (SBD) is an uncommon bone alteration that affects the mandible and usually presents as an asymptomatic radiolucency located in the posterior region of body or angle of the mandible, below the alveolar canal. Although clinical and radiographic features are more often sufficient for the diagnosis, other lesions and bone alterations have been described in the differential diagnosis and may lead to a misinterpretation and an incorrect diagnosis. Herein, we report a case of an 89-yearold man with metastatic prostate cancer to multiple bones, presenting an asymptomatic solitary well-defined radiolucent image on the right side of the posterior body of the mandible, in close co…

Unexpected Persistent Dentocentral Synchondrosis of C2.

2017

Background The persistence of synchondrosis in adulthood can confound diagnostic decisions made during patient management. Case Description A 59-year-old woman who presented neck pain, acute headache, and acute cervical myelopathy symptoms after suffering whiplash grade 3 in a car rear-end impact underwent a conventional radiologic study that revealed no fracture and no anatomic spine variations. The magnetic resonance imaging study revealed no spinal cord intensity signal changes, but it showed a persistent (remnant) dentocentral synchondrosis that was undetected in a previous conventional radiographic evaluation. Conclusions The localization and level of the remnant of the dentocentral sy…
