Some remarks on unconditionally convergent multipliers
2017
We present some results concerning the representation of unconditionally convergent multipliers, including a reformulation of a conjecture of Balazs and Stoeva.
Mond's conjecture for maps between curves
2017
A theorem by D. Mond shows that if f:(C,0)→C2,0 is finite and has has degree one onto its image (Y, 0), then the Ae-codimension is less than or equal to the image Milnor number μI(f), with equality if and only if (Y, 0) is weighted homogeneous. Here we generalize this result to the case of a map germ f:(X,0)→C2,0, where (X, 0) is a plane curve singularity.
Topology guaranteeing manifold reconstruction using distance function to noisy data
2006
Given a smooth compact codimension one submanifold S of Rk and a compact approximation K of S, we prove that it is possible to reconstruct S and to approximate the medial axis of S with topological guarantees using unions of balls centered on K. We consider two notions of noisy-approximation that generalize sampling conditions introduced by Amenta & al. and Dey & al. Our results are based upon critical point theory for distance functions. For the two approximation conditions, we prove that the connected components of the boundary of unions of balls centered on K are isotopic to S. Our results allow to consider balls of different radii. For the first approximation condition, we also prove th…
Separation properties of continuous maps in codimension 1 and geometrical applications
1992
Abstract Nuno Ballesteros, J.J. and M.C. Romero Fuster, Separation properties of continuous maps in codimension 1 and geometrical applications, Topology and its Applications 46 (1992) 107-111. We show that the image of a proper closed continuous map, f , from an n -manifold X to an ( n + 1)-manifold Y , such that H 1 (Y; Z 2 ) =0 , separates Y into at least two connected components provided the self-intersections set of f is not dense in any connected component of Y . We also obtain some geometrical applications.
Does letter position coding depend on consonant/vowel status? Evidence with the masked priming technique
2008
Recently, a number of input coding schemes (e.g., SOLAR model, SERIOL model, open-bigram model, overlap model) have been proposed that capture the transposed-letter priming effect (i.e., faster response times for jugde-JUDGE than for jupte-JUDGE). In their current version, these coding schemes do not assume any processing differences between vowels and consonants. However, in a lexical decision task, Perea and Lupker (2004, JML; Lupker, Perea, & Davis, 2008, L&CP) reported that transposed-letter priming effects occurred for consonant transpositions but not for vowel transpositions. This finding poses a challenge for these recently proposed coding schemes. Here, we report four masked priming…
On the nature of consonant/vowel differences in letter position coding: Evidence from developing and adult readers
2016
In skilled adult readers, transposed-letter effects (jugde-JUDGE) are greater for consonant than for vowel transpositions. These differences are often attributed to phonological rather than orthographic processing. To examine this issue, we employed a scenario in which phonological involvement varies as a function of reading experience: a masked priming lexical decision task with 50-ms primes in adult and developing readers. Indeed, masked phonological priming at this prime duration has been consistently reported in adults, but not in developing readers (Davis, Castles, & Iakovidis, 1998). Thus, if consonant/vowel asymmetries in letter position coding with adults are due to phonological inf…
Unitary Space–Time Constellation Design Based on the Chernoff Bound of the Pairwise Error Probability
2008
Unitary space-time constellation design is considered for noncoherent multiple-antenna communications, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows the fading coefficients of the channel. By employing the Clarke's subdifferential theorem of the sum of the kappa largest singular values of a unitary matrix, we present a numerical optimization procedure for finding unitary space-time signal constellations of any dimension. The Chernoff bound of the pairwise error probability is used directly as a design criterion. The constellations are found by performing gradient descent search on a family ldquosurrogaterdquo functions that converge to the maximum pairwise error probability. The comp…
Necessity of Protecting Religious Feelings under Criminal Law in a Democratic State
2021
Offending religious feelings, as referred to in Article 196 of the Polish Penal Code, was criminalized as follows: ‘Any person who offends the religious feelings of others by publicly insulting an object of religious worship or a place dedicated to the public celebration of religious rites shall be liable to a fine, restriction of freedom or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years.’ This study highlights some doubts concerning the protection of freedom of conscience and religion using the example of the crime of offending religious feelings and attempts to prove the necessity of such protection in the Republic of Poland, a democratic state ruled by the law. The study first examines wh…
Overcoming married women’s incapacity under The Spanish Civil code
2018
Somali Contract Law: Constitutional and Comparative Perspectives
2019
The Somali legal system had a very peculiar development. After colonisation, the independent country adopted a Civil law based legal system largely influenced by Italian law. The Civil Code adopted in 1973 was modeled on the Egyptian homologue enriched with other influences, mainly Italian. From the constitutional perspective, the country had three constitutions before the collapse of the state, followed recently by a provisional constitution that introduces a federal system to try to keep the unity of the State under the federal umbrella. The 1973 Somali Civil Code is formally still in force, as after the fall of Siad Barre the state failure brought with it the lack of any authority capabl…
