Developmental Dynamics of Phonemic Awareness and Reading Performance During the First Year of Primary School
2004
This study investigates prospective relationships between phonemic awareness and reading performance during the first year of Finnish primary school. Pedagogical interest lay in finding out whether systematic use of phonics in reading instruction supported children’s reading performance even if children can already decode. A total of 85 children were examined three times on phonemic awareness and four times on reading performance during the first school year. At the beginning of the school year, they were also tested on initial reading skills. The results showed that the development of phonemic awareness and reading performance was reciprocal. Reading performance predicted phonemic awarene…
Advanced Product Quality Planning Reference Model in Automotive Industry
2013
The papers objective is to present a detailed model of the Advanced Product Quality Planning methodology in the context of the automotive industry. The relations existent between the various inputs and outputs of each planning phase are clearly formulized revealing the intricate web of connections present among them thus facilitating understanding and comprehension of the vast task for both novice and experienced managers. The model can also contain a time and cost analysis of the various activities, concerning a family of products.
Mejorando el procesamiento macro-estructural en L2 en estudiantes con niveles de inglés elementales o intermedios: un procedimiento instruccional cen…
2014
Previous studies have shown that students have difficulties building the macro-structure from expository texts in English (as L2). The usual cause pointed out is a lack of language proficiency. Thus, instructional methods have focused on providing students with the necessary vocabulary and grammar knowledge. This study proposes and validates an instructional approach which improves students’ L2 processing on the macro-structural level, focusing on reading strategies rather than on vocabulary or grammar. Comprehension monitoring on the macro-structural level was improved by performing instructional tasks devoted to establish global coherence. As a consequence, students’ reading comprehension…
Early prediction of reading trajectories of children with and without reading instruction in kindergarten : a comparison study of Estonia and Finland
2019
Background: The present study examined differences in the prediction of reading development and reading difficulties in Estonia (n = 348) and Finland (n = 344). These neighbouring countries share many similarities in terms of their language, orthography and educational system; however, they differ in the timing of the onset of reading instruction, which is kindergarten in Estonia and Grade 1 in Finland. Methods: Children's skills were assessed three times – fall and spring in Grade 1 and spring in Grade 2. Results: The results showed that school‐entry rapid automatised naming and reading fluency predicted the development of fluency in Grade 2, but reading fluency was a stronger predictor in…
Mejorando la efectividad instruccional del texto educativo en ciencias: primeros resultados
1993
Resumen basado en el de la publicación Resumen en inglés Se compilan y analizan las variables textuales que participan en los procesos de comprensión y aprendizaje en textos científicos. A continuación, se propone una nueva clasificación que puede aplicarse al texto instructivo. Esta propuesta es evaluada en un experimento con diferentes grupos de estudiantes y varias tareas de aprendizaje. Se discuten los primeros resultados. ESP
Individual differences for self-regulating task-oriented reading activities.
2010
The goal of this study is to analyze the self-regulation processes present in task-oriented reading activities. In the 1st experiment, we examined the following self-regulation processes in the context of answering questions about an available text: (a) monitoring the comprehension of the question, (b) self-regulating the search process, and (c) monitoring the decision to search. Skilled and less skilled comprehenders from 7th and 8th grades read 2 texts and answered 16 questions while all their actions were recorded on a computer. We hypothesized that skilled comprehenders would differ from less skilled comprehenders on the 1st 2 processes on the basis of their general comprehension skills…
What happens when software developers are (un)happy
2017
The growing literature on affect among software developers mostly reports on the linkage between happiness, software quality, and developer productivity. Understanding happiness and unhappiness in all its components -- positive and negative emotions and moods -- is an attractive and important endeavor. Scholars in industrial and organizational psychology have suggested that understanding happiness and unhappiness could lead to cost-effective ways of enhancing working conditions, job performance, and to limiting the occurrence of psychological disorders. Our comprehension of the consequences of (un)happiness among developers is still too shallow, being mainly expressed in terms of developmen…
