Using Technologies to Teach Different Age Groups Meaningfully
2018
Increasing use of technologies in schools is inevitable as technologies provide new opportunities for innovative ways of learning and naturally attract students’ attention as modern and even playful tools. However, use of technologies can be most effective if the tasks are suitable for the specific age of students. It is necessary for teachers to be aware of cognitive development of children in different age groups in order to offer teaching methods and tasks that can be well-perceived by students and that foster the development of their cognitive abilities. This chapter provides a brief overview of cognitive development of children at different school ages, including development of executi…
The Role of Sourcing in Discourse Comprehension
2017
This chapter provides a theoretical background by discussing different frameworks relevant for understanding the role of sourcing in discourse comprehension. It reviews empirical work on students' sourcing skills and the role of individual and contextual factors in sourcing and discusses the nature and particular challenges of sourcing in digital contexts and review research on sourcing in such contexts. The chapter analyses intervention work aiming to improve students' consideration and evaluation of source features when dealing with multiple documents and also reviews measures used to assess sourcing skills in the research literature. Developmental psychology research on social cognition …
Procedural semantics, metarepresentation, and some particles in Behdini Kurdish
2012
Contemporary studies in the linguistic semantics of particles have been greatly influenced by two ideas: that these items trigger pragmatic processing procedures rather than provide purely conceptual content, and that the procedures that some of them trigger relate to the recovery of metarepresentations. Recent developments in the theory of procedural semantics have introduced some refinements, notably the claim that these procedures may not all relate primarily to comprehension per se but may also relate to the epistemic assessment of communicated claims. This paper discusses three particles in Behdini Kurdish in the light of these theoretical developments: the speech-act particle ka often…
Search and Comprehension Processes in Learning from Text
2008
We analyzed the relationships between comprehension skill and search strategies in instructional text. In two experiments, college-level readers were asked to search a computer-presented science text in order to answer different types of questions. High level questions required the integration of information across paragraphs, whereas low level questions requested the localization of information within a single paragraph. High level questions were re-read more often and they resulted in broader text search patterns. Furthermore, students who were diagnosed as good comprehenders located relevant sections of the text faster and spent more time on those sections. Poor comprehenders, on the oth…
Manipulatable Models for Investigating Processing of Dynamic Diagrams
2010
Existing approaches for collecting process data on human diagram comprehension have limited effectiveness. Analogue models that allow participants to manipulate diagram components offer powerful ways to capture the non-verbal and dynamic aspects of processing that are not available with some other approaches. Examples drawn from a variety of different domains illustrate the utility of model manipulation for revealing otherwise inaccessible aspects of how people process animated diagrams of complex content.

Perspective in the Processing of the Chinese Reflexive ziji: ERP Evidence
2011
We investigated the comprehension of the Chinese reflexive ziji, which is typically subject to long-distance binding. However, this preference can be overridden by verb semantics (some verbs require local binding) as well as by subtle feature combinations of intervening noun phrases (NPs) (e.g., 1st/2nd person pronouns block dependencies with more distant 3rd person antecedents). The processing of ziji was examined in sentences containing two verb types (local/self-oriented, distant/other-oriented) and three different intervening NPs (1st, 2nd , 3rd person). The event-related potential data revealed an early interaction of verb and intervener: other-oriented verbs showed more processing eff…
Student understanding of graph slope and area under a curve: A replication study comparing first-year physics and economics students
2019
The understanding of graphs and extraction of relevant information from graphs plays a major role in physics education and is also important in several related fields. Recently, Susac et al. [Phys. Rev. Phys. Educ. Res. 14, 020109 (2018)10.1103/PhysRevPhysEducRes.14.020109] compared physics and psychology students’ understanding of graphs in the contexts of physics and finance. They showed that physicists scored significantly higher in both domains and that all students solved the slope problems better than the area problems. Moreover, eye-tracking data revealed that physics students spent more time on problems associated with the area under the graph and focused longer on the axis labels o…
Social interactional behaviors and symbolic play competence as predictors of language development and their associations with maternal attention-dire…
1999
Abstract Children’s early social interactional behaviors and symbolic play competence were studied at 14 months in a sample of 111 mother-infant pairs. The categories of social interactional behaviors, joint visual attention, socially coordinated and object oriented interactions were assessed via observations of mother-infant joint play. An index of symbolic play was derived from the child’s solitary play, which was assessed independently. We examined both the interrelations of these two types of early language predictors, and their relation to children’s language skills and maternal attention-directing strategies. Measures of children’s language comprehension and production were obtained u…
Anaphor Processing During Reading Comprehension in Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder
2021
With the purpose of promoting academic inclusion, it is essential for educators to understand the nature underlying poor reading comprehension in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In th...
