Immediate effects of wearing knee length socks differing in compression level on postural regulation in community-dwelling, healthy, elderly men and …

2018

Background Stimulation of lower limbs’ cutaneous receptors and mechanoreceptors through compression garments could potentially increase somatosensory system efficiency and aid postural regulation in elderly individuals. Research question This study examined immediate effects of wearing knee length socks (KLS) of various compression levels on somatosensory function in community-dwelling healthy elderly men and women during a double-limb standing, balancing task. Methods A total of forty-six elderly participants (Male = 23), aged between 65 and 84 years old, randomly selected from the Singapore community-dwelling, healthy population. Three treatment interventions (wearing clinical compression…

Ventilation volumes with different self-inflating bags with reference to the ERC guidelines for airway management: comparison of two compression tech…

2000

The 1998 ERC-guidelines for airway-management recommend an tidal volume of 400-600 ml for adults undergoing CPR. As commercially available self-inflating bags were designed to meet former recommendations (800-1200 ml) we investigated how to meet the latest recommendations with these bags. We combined the head of a training manikin (Laerdal Medical) and a standard lung (VTTL; Michigan Instrument), adjusted to a physiological compliance and resistance. Volume was measured with a Wright spirometer (BOC). Seven self-inflating bags were investigated. Tests were carried out by ten people (five female and five male) for 5 min each using two different techniques. Technique 1: standard ventilation w…

Tocilizumab as first treatment option in optic neuropathy secondary to Graves' orbitopathy.

2018

Dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) is one of the complications that can affect Graves' orbitopathy (GO) patients. Its prevalence is estimated at less than 5%. It is usually treated with intravenous steroids, radiotherapy or orbital decompression. Tocilizumab has been proposed as a treatment option in cases of GO refractory to steroid treatment, with good clinical results. Our aim is to report the case of a patient with optic neuropathy secondary to GO treated with tocilizumab as primary treatment option.

A new minimum spanning tree-based method for shape description and matching working in Discrete Cosine space

2009

In this article, a new minimum spanning tree-based method for shape description and matching is proposed. Its properties are checked through the problem of graphical symbols recognition. Recognition invariance in front shift and multi-oriented noisy objects was studied in the context of small and low resolution binary images. The approach seems to have many desirable properties, even if the construction of graphs induces an expensive algorithmic cost. In order to reduce time computing, an alternative solution based on image compression concepts is provided. The recognition is realized in a compact space, namely the Discrete Cosine space. The use of block discrete cosine transform is discuss…

Effect of nano zinc oxide as UV stabilizer on the weathering performance of wood-polyethylene composite

2016

Abstract In this study, the effect of using nano-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles on the enhancement if the degradation resistance of wood-high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite was investigated through artificial weathering. Samples with different amounts of ZnO mixing ratio (0, 1, 2, and 4 wt%) were manufactured using an internal mixer followed by compression molding. The prepared samples were then exposed to the artificial weathering process in a QUV weatherometer. The weathering behavior of samples was characterized using tensile strength, contact angle analysis, colorimetry, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and FE-SEM. The results indicated that the amount of surfaces crack, tensile strength …

NOX reduction and efficiency improvements by means of the Double Fuel HCCI combustion of natural gas–gasoline mixtures

2016

Abstract Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) and Double Fuel (DF) combustion represent two innovative processes sharing a strong potential for pollutant emissions and fuel consumption reduction. HCCI regards the auto-ignition of a homogeneous premixed charge of air and fuel, featuring very low NOX emissions and good efficiency. Double Fuel (DF) instead indicates the simultaneous combustion of gasoline and natural gas (or gasoline and LPG), premixed with air by the port injection of both fuels within same engine cycle. Since fuel mixtures enhances the HCCI performances widening the range of possible operating conditions, the authors tested the HCCI combustion process using natural…

A simple model for the calculation of the axial load-carrying capacity of corroded RC columns

2015

In the present paper, a simplified model is used to determine the axial load-carrying capacity of compressed short reinforced concrete columns subjected to corrosion processes. The model considers members with circular and square cross-sections and accounts for—cover spalling, —concrete core confinement induced by transverse steel reinforcement, —buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bars. Strength reduction in concrete cover and core due to cracking induced by rust formation, reduction of steel area in longitudinal bars and transverse stirrups due to general and pitting corrosion and loss of confinement pressure are considered. The load-carrying capacity and load-axial strain curves here ge…

Advanced Strategies and Materials for Reinforcing Normal and Disturbed Regions in Brick Masonry Columns

2016

This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behavior of 42 solid clay brick masonry columns internally strengthened by fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) fabrics or stainless steel grids placed in horizontal mortar joints. In some cases, every course, and in other cases, alternate courses were reinforced with steel grids, carbon, and basalt FRP fabrics. Monotonic compressive loading tests were carried out under concentric and eccentric loads. Eccentric tests were carried out by loading the specimens on a reduced area with respect to the entire cross section, producing a disturbed region (D-region). A detailed characterization of the constituent materials was made expe…
