A Green Look at the Aldol Reaction

2005

Aldol reactions have been and are widely applied for the preparation of β-hydroxy aldehydes, β-hydroxy ketones or α,β-unsaturated aldehydes or ketones through addition or addition-elimination reactions of aldehydes and ketones. The study of the aldol reaction from the point of view of its greenness must have in mind first of all that a general synthetic method must be based on complete and efficient conversions of well defined selectivity and that greenness is more a term for comparison than an absolute kind of qualification. This comparison, when referred to the aldol reaction, applies here to the diverse modifications of the reaction. Thus, the original poorly selective, but highly atom e…

Enhanced organic mass fraction and decreased hygroscopicity of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) during new particle formation events

2010

In a forested near-urban location in central Germany, the CCN efficiency of particles smaller than 100 nm decreases significantly during periods of new particle formation. This results in an increase of average activation diameters, ranging from 5 to 8% at supersaturations of 0.33% and 0.74%, respectively. At the same time, the organic mass fraction in the sub-100-nm size range increases from approximately 2/3 to 3/4. This provides evidence that secondary organic aerosol (SOA) components are involved in the growth of new particles to larger sizes, and that the reduced CCN efficiency of small particles is caused by the low hygroscopicity of the condensing material. The observed dependence of…

Asymmetric, Three-Component, One-Pot Synthesis of Spiropyrazolones and 2,5-Chromenediones from Aldol Condensation/NHC-Catalyzed Annulation Reactions

2016

A novel one-pot, three-component diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of spiropyrazolones has been developed involving the aldol condensation of an enal to generate α,β-unsaturated pyrazolones, which react with a second equivalent of enal through an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed [3+2] annulation. The desired spirocyclopentane pyrazolones are obtained in moderate to good yields and good to excellent stereoselectivities. Alternatively, starting from cyclic 1,3-diketones, 2,5-chromenediones are available through [2+4] annulation.

The dynamics of 57Fe nuclei in Fe(II)-DNA and [Fe(II)(1-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole)2]-DNA condensates.

2002

Abstract Alcoholic solutions of FeCl 2 and Fe II (Hmmi) 2 Cl 2 (Hmmi=1-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole) induce calf thymus DNA condensation from aqueous solutions buffered at pH 7.4. A 1:1 Fe II –(DNA monomer) stoichiometry is assumed. The 57 Fe Mossbauer hyperfine parameters suggest an octahedral coordination environment, severely distorted, in both Fe II –(DNA monomer) and [Fe II (Hmmi) 2 ]–(DNA monomer) condensates. The dynamic properties of iron nuclei in freeze-dried samples were investigated by means of variable temperature 57 Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. Mean square displacements, 〈 x 2 〉( T ), were calculated, such as the effective vibrating mass and the Mossbauer lattice temperature of th…

Measurements of aerosol and CCN properties in the Mackenzie River delta (Canadian Arctic) during spring–summer transition in May 2014

2018

Within the framework of the RACEPAC (Radiation–Aerosol–Cloud Experiment in the Arctic Circle) project, the Arctic aerosol, arriving at a ground-based station in Tuktoyaktuk (Mackenzie River delta area, Canada), was characterized during a period of 3 weeks in May 2014. Basic meteorological parameters and particle number size distributions (PNSDs) were observed and two distinct types of air masses were found. One type were typical Arctic haze air masses, termed accumulation-type air masses, characterized by a monomodal PNSD with a pronounced accumulation mode at sizes above 100 nm. These air masses were observed during a period when back trajectories indicate an air mass origin in the north-e…

1986

The kinetics of polyamidation was investigated for the reaction of diphenyl terephthalate as activated diester with trimethylhexamethylenediamine (1 : 1 mixture of 2,2,4- and 2,4,4-trimethyl isomers) in dimethyl sulfoxide. The good solubility of the resulting polyamide (Trogamid®(poly(iminoterephthaloylimino-x,y,z-trimethylhexamethylene))) assured a reaction in which all reactants, especially the polyamide, were soluble. The conversion was followed by analysis of the phenol set free and by measuring the number-average degree of polymerization Pn of the polyamide. The reaction obeyed an overall second order with the principle of equal reactivity of functional groups fulfilled for Pn ≿ 16. De…

1986

The aminolysis of diphenyl terephthalate by means of hexylamine was studied in dimethyl sulfoxide as a model reaction for polyamidation. The kinetic analysis showed that the two ester groups of the diphenyl ester do not react independently. Furthermore, the reaction of the first ester group was of mixed second and third order, while the reaction of the second ester group contained only a second order term. The rate constants found were used to determine the Arrhenius activation parameters.

Regio-specific synthesis of new 1-(tert-butyl)-1H-pyrazolecarboxamide derivatives

2017

Regio-specific and non-regiospecific condensation reactions on 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds rendered 1,3,5-trisubstituted pyrazoles. Herein, the control of regio-specificity was a significant improvement in pyrazole research. A high yield acylation of poorly nucleophilic aryl amines, which resulted in mono- or diacylated products depending on the reaction conditions, is described. As a result, a library of potentially bioactive compounds was obtained. Fil: Ruatta Merke, Santiago Matías. Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Primary biological aerosol particles in the atmosphere: a review

2012

Atmospheric aerosol particles of biological origin are a very diverse group of biological materials and structures, including microorganisms, dispersal units, fragments and excretions of biological organisms. In recent years, the impact of biological aerosol particles on atmospheric processes has been studied with increasing intensity, and a wealth of new information and insights has been gained. This review outlines the current knowledge on major categories of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAP): bacteria and archaea, fungal spores and fragments, pollen, viruses, algae and cyanobacteria, biological crusts and lichens and others like plant or animal fragments and detritus. We give a…

Simulation of organics in the atmosphere: evaluation of EMACv2.54 with the Mainz Organic Mechanism (MOM) coupled to the ORACLE (v1.0) submodel

2021

Abstract. An updated and expanded representation of organics in the chemistry general circulation model EMAC (ECHAM5/MESSy for Atmospheric Chemistry) has been evaluated. First, the comprehensive Mainz Organic Mechanism (MOM) in the submodel MECCA (Module Efficiently Calculating the Chemistry of the Atmosphere) was activated with explicit degradation of organic species up to five carbon atoms and a simplified mechanism for larger molecules. Second, the ORACLE submodel (version 1.0) considers now condensation on aerosols for all organics in the mechanism. Parameterizations for aerosol yields are used only for the lumped species that are not included in the explicit mechanism. The simultaneous…
