MoSi2 laser cladding—A new experimental procedure: double-sided injection of MoSi2 and ZrO2

2003

International audience; In the last decade, development of low density advanced material systems for service at temperatures up to 1300 °C was one of the goals of many researches. This kind of material should mainly have moderate fracture toughness and should exhibit oxidation resistant behaviour at low and intermediate temperature. One of the most studied materials continues to be the intermetallic compound MoSi2. The molybdenum disilicide has been considered as an attractive candidate due to its melting point (2030 °C) and excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures. The main problem associated with the MoSi2 layer synthesized using laser beam is the layer fragility. To avoid this…

Thermodynamics of ABO3-Type Perovskite Surfaces

2011

The ABO3-type perovskite manganites, cobaltates, and ferrates (A= La, Sr, Ca; B=Mn, Co, Fe) are important functional materials which have numerous high-tech applications due to their outstanding magnetic and electrical properties, such as colossal magnetoresistance, half-metallic behavior, and composition-dependent metal-insulator transition (Coey et al., 1999; Haghiri-Gosnet & Renard, 2003). Owing to high electronic and ionic conductivities. these materials show also excellent electrochemical performance, thermal and chemical stability, as well as compatibility with widely used electrolyte based on yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Therefore they are among the most promising materials as …

Generation of multiphoton Fock states by bichromatic adiabatic passage: Topological analysis

2004

We propose a robust scheme to generate multi-photon Fock states in an atom-maser-cavity system using adiabatic passage techniques and topological properties of the dressed eigenenergy surfaces. The mechanism is an exchange of photons from the maser field into the initially empty cavity by bichromatic adiabatic passage. The number of exchanged photons depends on the design of the adiabatic dynamics through and around the conical intersections of dressed eigenenergy surfaces.

Proton conducting polymer composites for electrochromic devices

1999

Abstract This report describes composite proton electrolytes composed of nanosize zirconium phosphate or antimonic acid particles suspended in a poly(vinyl acetate)/glycerin gel matrix. The proton conductivity was 10 −3 –10 −4 S/cm at room temperature, thermal stability prevailed up to at least 110°C, and compatibility was found with oxide electrodes; these properties makes the electrolyte suitable for use in solid state electrochemical devices. The temperature dependence of the conductivity was found to obey the Williams-Landel-Ferry relationship at temperatures over 60°C, thus suggesting that the ion conductivity in the composite electrolyte can be described by mechanisms normally taken t…

Ultrafast decay of the excited singlet states of thioxanthone by internal conversion and intersystem crossing.

2010

The experimental ultrafast photophysics of thioxanthone in several aprotic organic solvents at room temperature is presented, measured using femtosecond transient absorption together with high-level ab initio CASPT2 calculations of the singlet- and triplet-state manifolds in the gas phase, including computed state minima and conical intersections, transition energies, oscillator strengths, and spin-orbit coupling terms. The initially populated singlet pi pi* state is shown to decay through internal conversion and intersystem crossing processes via intermediate n pi* singlet and triplet states, respectively. Two easily accessible conical intersections explain the favorable internal conversio…

Spatial Gradients of Intensity and Persistence of Soil Water Repellency Under Different Forest Types in Central Mexico

2017

Organic residues release hydrophobic compounds to the soil that may induce soil water repellency (WR), which may inhibit infiltration andincrease runoff and soil loss rates. Although there are many studies on soil WR through the world, very few investigations have been con-ducted in Mexican areas. This paper studies the natural background of soil WR in soils from central Mexico under representative forest types, analyzing the spatial distribution of soil WR in relation with tree canopy, vegetation cover and main soil chemical (pH, CaCO3, organic Ccontent and exchangeable cations) and physical properties (texture). The water drop penetration time and the ethanol tests were used to assesspersis…

Organochlorine Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners in LannerFalco biarmicus feldeggiiSchlegel Chicks and Lanner Prey in Sicily, Italy

2008

This paper reports on research conducted to elucidate the risk posed to the Sicilian population of the endangered lanner falcon Falco biarmicus feldeggii Schlegel by organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as part of a wider study on contaminant risk to the lanner. Seventeen lanner nest sites were studied in northern and central Sicily. Sampling (in 2005) and analysis were carried out for selected OC pesticides and PCB congeners in lanner chick blood (15 chicks from 6 nest sites) and in two of the main lanner prey species, magpie Pica pica (36 individuals from 6 lanner nest sites) and rock dove Columba livia (10 individuals from 2 lanner nest sites). No OC and P…

Landscape-scale Spatial Distribution of the Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus feldeggii) Breeding Population in Italy

2008

Falco biarmicus feldeggii is one of the most threatened taxa in Europe. Its global population is estimated at a few hundred pairs unequally scattered in a vast and fragmented area stretching from Sicily to the Caspian Sea. Most recent counts showed that Italy hosts a large part (>25%) of the whole population. Consequently, Italian authorities promoted a national action plan. In this framework, we carried out the first national survey for the Lanner Falcon in Italy (2003-2004). Our study area covered the whole breeding range, i.e., Sicily and the Italian peninsula (n = 2909 cells 10 × 10 km). When possible, we considered also additional information from previous regional investigations (1993…

Conical Two-Phase Swirl Flow Atomizers—Numerical and Experimental Study

2021

This paper presents the results of numerical simulations for the developed and discussed conical two-phase atomizers with swirl flow, differing in the ratio of the height of the swirl chamber to its diameter. Experiments were carried out for SAN-1 with HS/DS = 1 and SAN-2 with HS/DS = 4 atomizers. The study was conducted over a range of Reynolds number for liquid ReL = (1400

Mutual intelligibility among the sign languages of Belgium and the Netherlands

2015

AbstractIn an exploratory study of mutual intelligibility between the sign languages of the northern part of Belgium (Flemish Sign Language, VGT), the southern part of Belgium (French Belgian Sign Language, LSFB), and the Netherlands (Sign Language of the Netherlands, NGT), we tested the comprehension of VGT by signers of LSFB and NGT. In order to measure the influence of iconic structures (classifier constructions and constructed action) that linguistic analyses have shown to be similar across different sign languages, two genres were compared: narrative and informative signing. To investigate the effect of the overlap between the spoken languages surrounding the Dutch and Flemish Deaf com…
