From Associations to Rules: Connectionist Models of Behavior and Cognition

2008

International audience; This book introduces a host of connectionist models of cognition and behavior. The major areas covered are high-level cognition, language, categorization and visual perception, and sensory and attentional processing. All of the articles cover unpublished research work. The key contribution of this book is that it focuses exclusively on the advances in connectionist modeling in psychology. The papers are relatively short, and were explicitly written to be accessible to both connectionist modelers and experimental psychologists.

Evaluation of the primary stability in dental implants placed in low density bone with a new drilling technique, osseodensification: an in vitro study

2020

Background Primary stability is an important key determinant of implant osseointegration. We investigated approaches to improve primary implant stability using a new drilling technique termed osseodensification (OD), which was compared with the conventional under-drilling (UD) method utilized for low-density bones. Material and Methods We placed 55 conical internal connection implants in each group, in 30 low-density sections of pig tibia. The implants were placed using twist drill bits in both groups; groups Under Drilling (UD) and Osseodensification (OD) included bone sections subjected to conventional UD and OD drilling, respectively. Before placing the implants, we randomized the bone s…

A Theory of electrical circuits with resistively coupled distributed structures : Delay time predicting

1988

This paper deals with qualitative properties ( existence, uniqueness, and especially, stability) and numerical solution of a circuit consisting of a resistive multiport with r-c-g "exactly modeled" distributed elements connected to its terminals. This kind of results are useful, for instance, when we study the effect of interconnections on the speed of transient process from an integrated structure. A formula to evaluate the delay time as a global parameter of the circuit is given and verified by numerical calculus. peerReviewed

The growing attention that Europe pays to the risks of hyper connection in digital work, also with reference to public work, has enriched the debate on the advisability…

Dissociable Functional Brain Networks Associated With Apathy in Subcortical Ischemic Vascular Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease

2021

Few studies have investigated differences in functional connectivity (FC) between patients with subcortical ischemic vascular disease (SIVD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), especially in relation to apathy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare apathy-related FC changes among patients with SIVD, AD, and cognitively normal subjects. The SIVD group had the highest level of apathy as measured using the Apathy Evaluation Scale-clinician version (AES). Dementia staging, volume of white matter hyperintensities (WMH), and the Beck Depression Inventory were the most significant clinical predictors for apathy. Group-wise comparisons revealed that the SIVD patients had the worst level of “Ini…

Verifying the effect of distributed generators on voltage profile, power losses and protection system in radial distribution networks

2013

In the recent years the electrical power networks are undergoing rapid restructuring and developing process worldwide. Advancement in technologies and concern about the environmental impacts have led to increase interconnection of renewable energy based distributed generations (DGs) in distribution networks. The DGs have significant impacts on the distribution systems; these impacts may be either positively or negatively depending on the modified interconnected DG distribution network structure. It will be necessary to consider many issues concerning these impacts. In this paper, an investigation of DGs impacts on voltage profile, power losses, and protection system in radial distribution n…

Earth resistance measurements in urban contexts: Problems and possible solutions

2017

Both EN 50522 and IEEE Std. 81 propose the Fall of Potential Method (FPM) to carry out the measurement of the resistance to earth of an Earthing System (ES). However, in urban areas, the recommended distances between the ES and auxiliary electrodes are not easy to respect, due to the presence of buildings and tarmac. Moreover, unknown buried metallic parts, as well as the interconnection among the ESs made by the Distributor System Operator, could modify the earth potential profile of the area, affecting the measurement results. In this paper, the issues that could affect the measurement result if FPM is used in an urban context are presented. A parametric analysis, carried out with Comsol …

A Neuro-Ethological Approach for the TSP: Changing Metaphors in Connectionist Models.

1994

Biological systems often offer solutions to difficult problems which are not only original but also efficient. Connectionist models have been inspired by neural systems and successfully applied to the formulation of algorithms for solving complex problems such as the travelling salesman problem. In this paper we extend the connectionist metaphor to include an ethological account of how problems similar to the travelling salesman problem are solved by real living systems. A model is presented in which a population of neural networks with simple sensory-motor systems evolve genetically in simulated environments which represent the problem instances to be solved. Preliminary results are discu…

2019

Masteroppgave psykisk helsearbeid ME504 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Background:The theme of this study is "Youth, Faith and Mental Health". The background for choosing this theme is the major focus of our time on adolescents and their mental health. According to the Institute of Public Health (2009), 15-20% of children and youth have mental health problems, with complex symptoms that influences their well-being, learning ability, daily activities and socializing with others.Purpose:The purpose of this study is to investigate the coherence between Christian faith and mental health in adolescents. The following issue was selected: what coherences does youth experience concerning their person…

Climate signatures on decadal to interdecadal time scales as obtained from mollusk shells (Arctica islandica) from Iceland

2013

Abstract Pronounced decadal climate oscillations are detected in a multi-centennial record based on shell growth rates of the marine bivalve mollusk, Arctica islandica, from Iceland. The corresponding analysis of patterns in sea level pressure and temperature exhibit large-scale teleconnections with North Atlantic climate quantities. We find that the record projects onto blocking situations in the northern North Atlantic. The associated circulation shows a low-pressure signature over Greenland and the Labrador Sea and a high-pressure system over Western Europe associated with northeasterly flow towards Iceland and weakening in the westerly zonal flow over Europe. It can be speculated that s…
