Line based motion estimation and reconstruction of piece-wise planar scenes

2011

We present an algorithm for reconstruction of piece-wise planar scenes from only two views and based on minimum line correspondences. We first recover camera rotation by matching vanishing points based on the methods already exist in the literature and then recover the camera translation by searching among a family of hypothesized planes passing through one line. Unlike algorithms based on line segments, the presented algorithm does not require an overlap between two line segments or more that one line correspondence across more than two views to recover the translation and achieves the goal by exploiting photometric constraints of the surface around the line. Experimental results on real i…

Metrics in method engineering

1995

So many software development methods have been introduced in the last decade, that one can talk about a “methodology jungle”. To aid the method developers and evaluators in fighting their way through this jungle we propose a systematic approach for measuring properties of methods. We describe two sets of metrics, which measure the complexity of diagrammatic specification techniques on the one hand, and of complete systems development methods on the other hand. Proposed metrics provide a relatively fast and simple way to analyse the technique (or method) properties, and when accompanied with other selection criteria, can be used for estimating the cost of learning the technique and the relat…

Energy-Efficient Binary Power Control with Bit Error Rate Constraint in MIMO-OFDM Wireless Communication Systems

2012

Motivated by the demand for energy efficiency improvement in mobile communication industry, we explore an idea of optimizing energy efficiency for MIMO-OFDM wireless communication systems while maintaining users' quality of service (QoS) requirement. Based on the binary power control scheme,a power allocation criterion for energy efficiency optimization is derived under the total power constraint. From a bit error rate (BER) point of view, a protection constraint is configured to guarantee the system QoS. With the aim of energy efficiency optimization under QoS guarantee in MIMO-OFDM wireless communication systems, an energy-efficient binary power control with BER constraint (EBPCB) algorith…

Adoption of Constrained Application Protocol

2016

Among billions of Internet enabled devices that are expected to surround us in the near future, many will be resource constrained, i.e., will have limited power supply, processing power and memory. To cope with these limitations, the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) has been recently introduced as a lightweight alternative to HTTP for connecting the resource limited devices to the Web. Although the new protocol offers solid technical advantages, it remains uncertain whether a successful uptake will follow, as it depends also on its economic feasibility for the involved stakeholders. Therefore, this paper studies the techno-economic feasibility of CoAP using a systematic methodologica…

Clustering categorical data: A stability analysis framework

2011

Clustering to identify inherent structure is an important first step in data exploration. The k-means algorithm is a popular choice, but K-means is not generally appropriate for categorical data. A specific extension of k-means for categorical data is the k-modes algorithm. Both of these partition clustering methods are sensitive to the initialization of prototypes, which creates the difficulty of selecting the best solution for a given problem. In addition, selecting the number of clusters can be an issue. Further, the k-modes method is especially prone to instability when presented with ‘noisy’ data, since the calculation of the mode lacks the smoothing effect inherent in the calculation …

Critical analysis of conventional thermoeconomic approaches to the diagnosis of multiple faults in air conditioning units: Capabilities, drawbacks an…

2013

Abstract Faults diagnosis in air conditioning systems is a crucial activity, since malfunctions may induce heavy degradation of performance. Among the available techniques, thermoeconomic diagnosis has played a marginal role due to the difficulties encountered when applying the methodology to refrigeration plants. In this paper a critical analysis on capabilities and limits of thermoeconomic diagnosis is proposed. The reference plant is a 120 kWc air-cooled air conditioning system; a simulator is used to evaluate thermodynamic data under normal and faulty conditions, setting up “virtual experiments” to simulate each fault. Five malfunctions are imposed, either individually or simultaneously…

Using Multi-touch Multi-user Interactive Walls for Collaborative Active Learning

2019

Active learning has been advocated for enhancing students’ higher order cognition in social constructivist learning settings. However, with the increasing use of student-owned computing devices in face-to-face classrooms, there are risks of limited student-student interactions. Students are likely to be distracted by non-academic activities, hence becoming inactive with regards to the learning tasks. This article presents a technology enhanced learning approach, in which students perform group learning tasks using shared digital workspace while in a physical classroom. The workspace comprises of a 9-m wide screen wall with multi-touch, multi-user interfaces supporting multimodal interaction…

3D Scene Reconstruction Using Kinect

2014

The issue of the automatic reconstruction of 3D scenes has been addressed in several chapters over the last few years. Many of them describe techniques for processing stereo vision or range images captured by high quality range sensors. However, due to the high price of such input devices, most of the methods proposed in the literature are not suitable for real-world scenarios. This chapter proposes a method designed to reconstruct 3D scenes perceived by means of a cheap device, namely the Kinect sensor. The scene is efficiently represented as a composition of superquadric shapes so as to obtain a compact description of environment, however complex it may be. The approach proposed here is i…

Indexing a sequence for mapping reads with a single mismatch

2014

Mapping reads against a genome sequence is an interesting and useful problem in computational molecular biology and bioinformatics. In this paper, we focus on the problem of indexing a sequence for mapping reads with a single mismatch. We first focus on a simpler problem where the length of the pattern is given beforehand during the data structure construction. This version of the problem is interesting in its own right in the context of the next generation sequencing. In the sequel, we show how to solve the more general problem. In both cases, our algorithm can construct an efficient data structure in time and space and can answer subsequent queries in time. Here, n is the length of the s…

What should I do next? Using shared representations to solve interaction problems

2011

Studies on how “the social mind” works reveal that cognitive agents engaged in joint actions actively estimate and influence another’s cognitive variables and form shared representations with them. (How) do shared representations enhance coordination? In this paper, we provide a probabilistic model of joint action that emphasizes how shared representations help solving interaction problems. We focus on two aspects of the model. First, we discuss how shared representations permit to coordinate at the level of cognitive variables (beliefs, intentions, and actions) and determine a coherent unfolding of action execution and predictive processes in the brains of two agents. Second, we discuss th…
