Protein Adsorption Hysteresis and Transient States of Fibrinogen and BMP-2 as Model Mechanisms for Proteome-Binding to Implants
2020
Abstract Protein adsorption studies returned to the focus of medical therapeutics, when it was found that up to 2500 non-plasma proteins adsorbed to hip implants during arthroplastic surgery, challenging peri-implant healing models. Questions have re-emerged as to the implications of uncontrolled protein unfolding after adsorption. In past studies on the cooperativity of protein binding we discovered protein adsorption hysteresis, a thermodynamically irreversible process. The present precursory study comprises real-time kinetic (TIRF-Rheometry) and equilibrium (125I-tracer ) studies on the hysteretic binding of fibrinogen and rhBMP-2 to titanium and glass surfaces via transient states. Ther…

Tradycyjny instytucjonalizm i jego znaczenie dla nauk politycznych
2015
The paper presents academic achievements of traditional institutionalism, the first scientific approach in political science, which was developed since the second part of the 19th century in USA, Great Britain, Germany and France. The author argues that this orientation had a creative influence on the progress of the discipline, however this impact is not appreciated by contemporary studies in the field of political science and political theory where limited understanding of the old institutionalism is promoted. The revision of this state of affairs has shown that, apart from the analysis of formal structures and institutions of state power, the traditionalists also have studied political p…
La committenza dei Barresi nel castello di Pietraperzia: la trasformazione della fabbrica in palazzo residenziale nel primo Cinquecento
2009
The essay reconstructs the history of the castle of Pietraperzia -now reduced to a state of ruin - between the second half of fifteenth and the first half of the sixteenth centuries. Over that period it was tranformed from a medieval fortress to a luxurious residence, home to a cultured and sophisticated court. Supported by new archival documents, the author highlights the role of the aristocratic patrons, the Barresi of Pietraperzia and, in particular, that of two key figures, Giovanni Antonio II and his son, Matteo. Simultaneously the author offers a hypotetical reconstruction of the 16 century appearance and configuration of the building. This was the most significant and lasting epoch i…
Domestic dexterity and cultural policy : the idea of cottage industry and historical experience in Finland from the great famine to the reconstructio…
2016
The concept of cottage industry (kotiteollisuus) referred especially to rural craft practices. For the promotion of cottage industries, a state administrative organ and a network of cottage industry associations and schools were established. A sphere developed and monitored by specialists, cottage industry policies were planned as official committee work. However, the matter was usually addressed as ‘the idea of cottage industry’ (kotiteollisuusaate). In this study, the historical idea of cottage industry and its cultural and political backgrounds are analysed. The starting point of the investigation is in the post-WWII Cottage Industry Production Committee, but from its years of activity, …
Prometeo genetista? Per il superamento dell'opposizione natura/cultura, una prospettiva antropopoietica ed ecopoietica
2019
During the XVIIth Century, particularly with Descartes, appeared the modern concept of nature: a nature as object submitted to the reason of man. Contrary to what is generally assumed, this « nature » as domain to be worked out by man does not depend on the Greek concept of phusis. It is not to be opposed either to the modern concept of « culture ». On the contrary the Greek phusis as dynamical process invites us to think the relationship between nature and culture, or rather between the environment and the communities of men which live in it and through it in terms of a necessary interaction. The Greek phusis leads to a critique of the modern, neoliberal paradigm of natural ressources to b…

The role of immigrants' self identity in effective integration process into Finland
2016
The purpose of this research is to study the role of immigrants’ identity in the process of effective integration into Finland. The research questions of the study explore (a) individual perceptions of self identity and effective integration into the host society from immigrants’ perspectives, (b) the impact of the integration process on immigrants’ self identity and (c) the identity changes of immigrants during the process of integration into the host society. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with six participants in Jyväskylä, Finland in order to best capture immigrants’ diverse life experiences reflecting identity issues during the integration process into the host soci…
