Thermal–mechanical and thermal–hydraulic integrated study of the Helium-Cooled Lithium Lead Test Blanket Module
2010
Abstract The Helium-Cooled Lithium Lead Test Blanket Module (HCLL-TBM) is one of the two TBM to be installed in an ITER equatorial port since day 1 of operation, with the specific aim to investigate the main concept functionalities and issues such as high efficiency helium cooling, resistance to thermo-mechanical stresses, manufacturing techniques, as well as tritium transport, magneto-hydrodynamics effects and corrosion. In particular, in order to show a DEMO-relevant thermo-mechanical and thermal–hydraulic behavior, the HCLL-TBM has to meet several requirements especially as far as its coolant thermofluid-dynamic conditions and its thermal–mechanical field are concerned. The present paper…
Influence of machining conditions on friction in metal cutting process – A review
2019
This paper presents a range of variable machining factors which influence substantially friction directly or by the tool wear developed in the cutting zone. The group of direct factors include the workpiece and cutting tool materials coupled, the cutting/sliding velocity, cooling media supplied to the tool-chip contact zone, modification of the tool contact faces by micro-texturing. Special attention was paid to the tool wear evolution and its pronounced effect on changes of the contact conditions.
Study and evaluation of fretting critical slip conditions by applying the design of experiments method
2006
Tribological systems are complex systems that require a multi-disciplinary (mechanical, material, physico-chemical) approach where numerous influence factors can be involved. To characterize a contact couple, the intrinsic parameters of the materials as well as the parameters related to the contact loading and the surrounding environment need to be taken into account. Fretting analysis, by means of running condition-fretting maps (RCFM), allows the behavior of the contact couple to be taken into account and to predict the boundary between partial slip and gross slip conditions. This article presents the study of a steel/polycarbonate couple during fretting tests. The study was carried out b…
Nanodroplets on a solid plane: wetting and spreading in a Monte Carlo simulation
2002
Abstract The wetting behavior and spreading dynamics of small polymer melt droplets in the course of transition from partial to complete wetting conditions on a flat structureless solid substrate have been studied by dynamic Monte Carlo simulation. From the density profiles of the drops we determine the contact angles at varying strength of the van der Waals surface forces in the whole interval of partial wetting. The validity of Young's equation is then tested whereby the surface tension of the melt/vapor interface is derived independently from interfacial fluctuation analysis, and the surface free energy of the melt at the substrate—from the anisotropy of the local pressure at the wall. T…
Simultaneous imaging of the surface and the submembraneous cytoskeleton in living cells by tapping mode atomic force microscopy
1997
Contact and tapping mode atomic force microscopy have been used to visualize the surface of cultured CV-1 kidney cells in aqueous medium. The height images obtained from living cells were comparable when using contact and tapping modes. In contrast, the corresponding, and simultaneously acquired, deflection images differed markedly. Whereas, as expected, deflection images enhanced the surface features in the contact mode, they revealed the presence of a filamentous network when using the tapping mode. This network became disorganized upon addition of cytochalasin, which strongly suggests that it corresponded to the submembraneous cytoskeleton. Examination of fixed cells further supported th…
Direct assessment of p–n junctions in single GaN nanowires by Kelvin probe force microscopy
2016
Making use of Kelvin probe force microscopy, in dark and under ultraviolet illumination, we study the characteristics of p-n junctions formed along the axis of self-organized GaN nanowires (NWs). We map the contact potential difference of the single NW p-n junctions to locate the space charge region and directly measure the depletion width and the junction voltage. Simulations indicate a shrinkage of the built-in potential for NWs with small diameter due to surface band bending, in qualitative agreement with the measurements. The photovoltage of the NW/substrate contact is studied by analysing the response of NW segments with p- and n-type doping under illumination. Our results show that th…
Characterization process to measure the electrical contact resistance of Gas Diffusion Layers under mechanical static compressive loads
2016
AEM2016. International conference on Advanced Energy Materials, University of Surrey, Guildford, ROYAUME-UNI, 12-/09/2016 - 14/09/2016; Recent research has identified the mechanical properties of the fuel cell internal components (in particular, the Gas Diffusion Layers - GDLs) as key-parameters to obtain high final performances of the generator. The mechanical compression modulus of these components, the stability of their mechanical properties with respect to temperature and humidity, and their ability to interact with water have an impact on the electrical contact resistances in the stack and, by consequence, on the overall performance of the electric generator. Reducing the losses by co…
Fabrication of carbon nanotube-based field-effect transistors for studies of their memory effects
2007
Carbon nanotube‐based field‐effect transistors (CNTFETs) have been fabricated using nanometer thin dielectric material as the gate insulator film. The demonstrated fabrication technique is highly suitable for preparing devices with low contact resistances between the electrodes and the carbon nanotube, down to 14 kΩ. Electronic transport measurements of the fabricated devices have been conducted on more than 70 FETs. Hysteretic behavior in the transfer characteristics of some CNTFETs was observed.

Effect of hydraulic coefficient on membrane performance for rejection of emerging contaminants
2018
International audience; The efficient removal of Endocrine Disruptive Chemicals (EDCs) namely oxybenzone and atrazine using polysulfone (PSf) composite membranes is reported in this article. A negatively charged hydrophilic mixed matrix membrane was prepared by using Polyaniline modified halloysite nanotubes (PANi-HNT) and polysulfone. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) technique confirm the conversion of Halloysite nanotubes to Polyaniline modified halloysite nanotubes and their presence in membrane matrix. The microvoids observable in the SEM images depict the internal structure of the membrane. Further, increasing in the water uptake and decrea…
