Effects of distance and eye-height on time-to-contact estimates

2014

Global flow impacts time-to-passage judgments based on local motion cues

2011

AbstractWe assessed the effect of the coherence of optic flow on time-to-passage judgments in order to investigate the strategies that observers use when local expansion information is reduced or lacking. In the standard display, we presented a cloud of dots whose image expanded consistent with constant observer motion. The dots themselves, however, did not expand and were thus devoid of object expansion cues. Only the separations between the dots expanded. Subjects had to judge which of two colored target dots, presented at different simulated depths and lateral displacements would pass them first. Image velocities of the target dots were chosen so as to correlate with time-to-passage only…

On the vibrations of a mechanically based non-local beam model

2012

The vibration problem of a Timoshenko non-local beam is addressed. The beam model involves assuming that the equilibrium of each volume element is attained due to contact forces and long-range body forces exerted, respectively, by adjacent and non-adjacent volume elements. The contact forces result in the classical Cauchy stress tensor while the long-range forces are taken as depending on the product of the interacting volume elements and on their relative displacement through a material-dependent distance-decaying function. To derive the motion equations and the related mechanical boundary conditions, the Hamilton's principle is applied The vibration problem of a Timoshenko non-local beam …

A mechanically based approach to non-local beam theories

2011

A mechanically based non-local beam theory is proposed. The key idea is that the equilibrium of each beam volume element is attained due to contact forces and long-range body forces exerted, respectively, by adjacent and non-adjacent volume elements. The contact forces result in the classical Cauchy stress tensor while the long-range forces are modeled as depending on the product of the interacting volume elements, their relative displacement and a material-dependent distance-decaying function. To derive the beam equilibrium equations and the pertinent mechanical boundary conditions, the total elastic potential energy functional is used based on the Timoshenko beam theory. In this manner, t…

Formation of a micropatterned titania photocatalyst by microcontact printed silicatein on gold surfaces

2012

The enzyme silicatein has been bioengineered to carry a thiol-bearing Au-affinity tag (Cys-tag) for direct immobilization on gold carriers in shortest time without the need for prior surface functionalization. Through microcontact printing, defined silicatein micropatterns were created on gold surfaces, facilitating the subsequent enzymatically controlled synthesis of photocatalytically active TiO(2).

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF A POSTERIOR STABILITY TOTAL KNEE JOINT REPLACEMENT

2011

Aim of this work is to compare two different total knee prostheses that differ in the shape of the Polyethylene (PE) insert, trying to optimize the shape of the best one, in order to reduce the stress peaks. The study procedure has been divided into the following steps. First step has been the three-dimensional shape acquisition of the two prostheses by means of a COMET5 3D scanner. The morphology of two prototypes of the prostheses has been acquired by elaborating multiple Moirè fringe pattern projected on their surfaces. Second step consisted of the manipulation of these data in a CAD module, that is the interpolation of raw data into parametric surfaces, reducing singularities due to the…

Inductive Power Transfer for 100W battery charging

2013

Today, Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) is widely investigated to provide wireless battery charge. Potential applications range from a few Watts of handheld devices to kWatts of automotive applications. Despite of comfort and safety options, wireless charging features relatively poor power conversion efficiency. In the literature, several solutions are proposed addressing efficiency related issues. In this paper, a 100W wireless charging station for electric bikes which improves the power conversion efficiency is proposed. The magnetic structure design is analyzed thoroughly as well as the proposed power electronics system architectures of both the power transmitter and power receiver. The ef…

Contact-Induced Convergence: Typology and Areality

2006

From an integrative perspective, research on language typology and research on areality understood in terms of contact-induced convergence are mutually dependent. Typologists need to be aware that their generalizations are as reliable as they manage to integrate effects of contact into their statistics. Contact linguists need to be aware that typological findings may not qualify as independent evidence for their field. Thus, typologists and contact linguists both need to have certain information concerning each other's field. For that reason, this article covers both fields under one title. The article is divided into three main sections. The first deals with language contact and its struct…
