Impaired Self-Awareness and Denial During the Postacute Phases After Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

While a number of empirical studies have appeared on impaired self-awareness (ISA) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) over the last 20 years, the relative role of denial (as a psychological method of coping) has typically not been addressed in these studies. We propose that this failure has limited our understanding of how ISA and denial differentially affect efforts to rehabilitate persons with TBI. In this selective review paper, we summarize early findings in the field and integrate those findings with more recent observations (i.e., 1999-2019). Metallic Nanoparticles Linked to Molecular Switches as Signal Processing Devices

We explore theoretically the use of nanoscale switches whose conductance can be varied between two states by an external stimulus to implement signal processing devices. The building block is formed by a metallic nanoparticle linked to two electrodes by an organic ligand and a molecular switch. The system implementation exploits the sharp current resonance of the system that occurs when the frequencies of the applied potential and the induced variation on the switch conductance coincide.

We carried out a multidisciplinary study linking behavioral and morphological data from a little-known guenon species, Cercopithecus solatus, endemic to Gabon. Over a period of 9 months, we documented the pattern of stratum use associated with postural and locomotor behavior by direct observation (650 hrs) of a semi-free-ranging breeding colony. We also conducted a morphometric analysis of the humerus and limb proportions of 90 adult specimens from 16 guenon species, including C. solatus. Field observations indicated that C. solatus monkeys spent a third of their time on the ground, similar to semi-terrestrial guenon species. Low-temperature exciton absorption in InSe under pressure.

We have investigated the effect of pressure on the lowest direct band-edge exciton of the layered semiconductor InSe by optical-absorption measurements at 10 K and for pressures up to 4 GPa. The Elliott-Toyozawa formalism is used to analyze the line shape of the exciton absorption spectra. In this way we determine the pressure dependence of the lowest direct band gap, the exciton binding energy, and the exciton linewidth. The band gap exhibits a pronounced nonlinear shift with pressure, which is a consequence of the strong anisotropy of intralayer and interlayer bonding. The structural macroscopic behaviour is obtained making use of the Computational Homogenization (CH) technique based on the solution of the boundary value problem (BVP) of a detailed Unit Cell (UC) chosen at the meso-scale and representative of the heterogeneous material.
