Tissue- and cell-specific expression of metallothionein genes in cadmium- and copper-exposed mussels analyzed by in situ hybridization and RT–PCR

2007

Abstract Metallothioneins (MTs) are metal-inducible proteins that can be used as biomarkers of metal exposure. In mussels two families of MT isoforms (MT10 and MT20) have been characterized. In this study, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were exposed to 200 ppb Cd and 40 ppb Cu for 2 and 9 days to characterize the tissue and isoform specificity of metal-induced MT expression. Non-radioactive in situ hybridization demonstrated that both MT isoforms were mainly transcribed in digestive tubule epithelial cells, especially in basophilic cells. Weaker MT expression was detected in non-ciliated duct cells, stomach and gill epithelial cells, haemocytes, adipogranular cells, spermatic follicles…

The metal binding abilities of Megathura crenulata metallothionein (McMT) in the frame of gastropoda MTs.

2011

Metallothioneins (MTs) are proteins that play a major role in metal homeostasis and/or detoxification in all kind of organisms. The MT gene/protein system of gastropod molluscs provides an invaluable model to study the diversification mechanisms that have enabled MTs to achieve metal-binding specificity through evolution. Most pulmonate gastropods, particularly terrestrial snails, harbor three paralogous isogenes encoding three MT isoforms with different metal binding preferences: the highly specific CdMT and CuMT isoforms, for cadmium and copper respectively, and the unspecific Cd/CuMT isoform. Megathura crenulata is a non-pulmonate gastropod in which only one MT isogene has so far been re…

Characterization of traditional artificial patinas on copper using the voltammetry of immobilized particles

2020

[EN] The voltammetry of immobilized particles methodology (VIMP) is used to characterize the composition of artificial patinas on copper. The voltammetric response of carbonate-, nitrate-, chloride-, sulfate-, and sulfide-based patinas is described using sub-microsamples attached to graphite electrodes in contact with aqueous acetate buffer. Patina-characteristic voltammetric profiles are obtained for the different artificial patinas that can be recognized using the generalized Tafel analysis of the voltammetric curves. VIMP data could also provide layer-by-layer information about composition and compactness/crystallinity of the patinas for which a simplified theoretical modeling is present…

An unusual magnetic response in a π-stacked 66-dia net structure of [4 + 2] copper(II) cubane

2015

A phenoxo bridged antiferromagnetic copper(II) cubane features a π-stacked 66-dia net framework and creates long range ferromagnetic ordering, as evidenced from a coercivity maximum (∼2000 Oe) at 20 K with very unusual saturation magnetization.

A CI study of the CuCO and CuCO+ complexes

1987

MO CI calculations are carried out using an optimal space of valence virtual MOs obtained by means of a projection technique, as a linear combination of the AOs which are more occupied in the molecular Fock space. Localization of the occupied MOs and nonvalence virtual MOs is also achieved. The overall procedure is proven to be quite advantageous and well suited to obtain potential energy curves which keep the same physical meaning along the range of distances studied. Using a slightly better than double‐zeta quality basis set, a valence CAS‐CI, and selected CI wave function by the CIPSI algorithm have revealed a possible weak van der Waals interaction for the 2Σ+ state of CuCO, which remai…

Copper homeostasis influences the circadian clock in Arabidopsis.

2010

Almost every aspect of plant physiology is influenced by diurnal and seasonal environmental cycles which suggests that biochemical oscillations must be a pervasive phenomenon in the underlying molecular organization. The circadian clock is entrained by light and temperature cycles, and controls a wide variety of endogenous processes that enable plants to anticipate the daily periodicity of environmental conditions. Several previous reports suggest a connection between copper (Cu) homeostasis and the circadian clock in different organisms other than plants. However, the nature of the Cu homeostasis influence on chronobiology remains elusive. Cytosolic Cu content could oscillate since Cu regu…

Ecological risks of an old wood impregnation mill: application of the triad approach.

2010

Although many studies deal with the distribution and mobility of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) metals in soil, the ecotoxicity of CCA-contaminated soils is rarely studied. The Triad approach was applied to determine the ecological risks posed by a CCA mixture at a decommissioned wood impregnation mill in southern Finland. A combination of (1) chemical analyses; (2) toxicity tests with plants (aquatic: Lemna minor; terrestrial: Lactuca sativa), earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus), and enchytraeids (Enchytraeus albidus) conducted on contaminated soils, their aqueous extracts, and well water collected from the site; and (3) determination of the abundance of enchytraeids and nematodes and the bio…
