Protective dendritic cell responses against listeriosis induced by the short form of the deubiquitinating enzyme CYLD are inhibited by full-length CY…
2015
The deubiquitinating enzyme CYLD is an important tumor suppressor and inhibitor of immune responses. In contrast to full-length CYLD, the immunological function of the naturally occurring short splice variant of CYLD (sCYLD) is insufficiently described. Previously, we showed that DCs, which lack full-length CYLD but express sCYLD, exhibit augmented NF-κB and DC activation. To explore the function of sCYLD in infection, we investigated whether DC-specific sCYLD regulates the pathogenesis of listeriosis. Upon Listeria monocytogenes infection of CD11c-Cre Cyld(ex7/8 fl/fl) mice, infection of CD8α(+) DCs, which are crucial for the establishment of listeriosis in the spleen, was not affected. Ho…
Activation of MAP kinase p38 is critical for the cell-cycle–controlled suppressor function of regulatory T cells
2007
AbstractRegulatory T cells play an essential role in the control of self-tolerance and processes of adaptive immunity. Tolerogenic IL-10–modulated human dendritic cells (IL-10DCs) induce anergic T cells with strong suppressive properties (iTregs) that inhibit the activation of effector T cells. In this study, we evaluated the interaction between cell-cycle regulation and intracellular signaling in these iTregs. Analysis of signal transduction events revealed a down-regulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and a nonactivation of extracellular-signal–regulated kinase (ERK) in contrast to a marked activation of p38 MAPK and the p38 effector MAPK-a…
OSSERVATORIO SUGLI IMPIANTI DI DEPURAZIONE MBR - Rapporto 2016
2016
A Novel System for Measuring Damaging Impacts on Table Olives
2015
The consumer today demands high quality products; fruit with defects or in poor condition generate dissatisfaction and a consequent reduction in consumption. In recent years, interesting systems have been used (i. e. "artificial fruit") in order to identify the cause of damage during mechanical harvesting and/or post-harvest operations. In this paper, the authors present a new system designed to measure the impacts received by table olives in the processing stages from harvesting to packaging. The device is an instrumented sphere designed and implemented by the Agricultural Mechanics Section of the Department of Agricultural and Forest Sciences, University of Palermo, Italy. It contains a t…
Non linear and linearized combination coefficients for modal pushover analysis
2017
Current design practice and seismic codes tend to assess seismic demand of buildings by Non linear Static Analysis (NSA), based on the evaluation of the pushover curve. Earlier non-linear static analysis procedure estimate the response peak value by evaluating the push-over curve adopting a distribution of invariant forces proportional to the fundamental vibration mode. In order to include the effect of higher modes several multimodal push-over analysis procedures were proposed in literature. In In the most famous of these, namely Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA), nodal response peak values are obtained by combination of "modal" responses by the traditional SRSS or CQC methods: the use of the …
A Novel Semi-Supervised Methodology for Extracting Tumor Type-Specific MRS Sources in Human Brain Data
2013
Background: The clinical investigation of human brain tumors often starts with a non-invasive imaging study, providing \ud information about the tumor extent and location, but little insight into the biochemistry of the analyzed tissue. Magnetic \ud Resonance Spectroscopy can complement imaging by supplying a metabolic fingerprint of the tissue. This study analyses \ud single-voxel magnetic resonance spectra, which represent signal information in the frequency domain. Given that a single \ud voxel may contain a heterogeneous mix of tissues, signal source identification is a relevant challenge for the problem of\ud tumor type classification from the spectroscopic signal.\ud Methodology/Princ…
Dynamic Integration of Decision Committees
2000
Decision committee learning has demonstrated outstanding success in reducing classification error with an ensemble of classifiers. In a way a decision committee is a classifier formed upon an ensemble of subsidiary classifiers. Voting, which is commonly used to produce the final decision of committees has, however, a shortcoming. It is unable to take into account local expertise. When a new instance is difficult to classify, then it easily happens that only the minority of the classifiers will succeed, and the majority voting will quite probably result in a wrong classification. We suggest that dynamic integration of classifiers is used instead of majority voting in decision committees. Our…
Maternal antibodies contribute to sex-based difference in hantavirus transmission dynamics
2013
Individuals often differ in their ability to transmit disease and identifying key individuals for transmission is a major issue in epidemiology. Male hosts are often thought to be more important than females for parasite transmission and persistence. However, the role of infectious females, particularly the transient immunity provided to offspring through maternal antibodies (MatAbs), has been neglected in discussions about sex-biased infection transmission. We examined the effect of host sex upon infection dynamics of zoonotic Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) in semi-natural, experimental populations of bank vole ( Myodes glareolus ). Populations were founded with either females or males that we…
Etestw versus broth microdilution for ceftaroline MIC determination with Staphylococcus aureus: Results from PREMIUM, a European multicentre study
2017
Objectives: To compare the concordance of ceftaroline MIC values by reference broth microdilution (BMD) and Etest (bioMérieux, France) for MSSA and MRSA isolates obtained from PREMIUM (D372SL00001), a European multicentre study. Methods: Ceftaroline MICs were determined by reference BMD and by Etest for 1242 MSSA and MRSA isolates collected between February and May 2012 from adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia or complicated skin and soft tissue infections; tests were performed across six European laboratories. Selected isolates with ceftaroline resistance in broth (MIC >1 mg/L) were retested in three central laboratories to confirm their behaviour. Results: Overall concordance…
Bacterial etiology of community-acquired pneumonia in immunocompetent hospitalized patients and appropriateness of empirical treatment recommendation…
2020
An accurate knowledge of the epidemiology of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is key for selecting appropriate antimicrobial treatments. Very few etiological studies assessed the appropriateness of empiric guideline recommendations at a multinational level. This study aims at the following: (i) describing the bacterial etiologic distribution of CAP and (ii) assessing the appropriateness of the empirical treatment recommendations by clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for CAP in light of the bacterial pathogens diagnosed as causative agents of CAP. Secondary analysis of the GLIMP, a point-prevalence international study which enrolled adults hospitalized with CAP in 2015. The analysis was l…
