Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV)-based vectors with engineered murine tropism express the rotavirus VP7 protein and immunize mice against r…

2011

A coronavirus vector based on the genome of the porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) expressing the rotavirus VP7 protein was constructed to immunize and protect against rotavirus infections in a murine model. The tropism of this TGEV-derived vector was modified by replacing the spike S protein with the homologous protein from mouse hepatitis virus (MHV). The rotavirus gene encoding the VP7 protein was cloned into the coronavirus cDNA. BALB/c and STAT1-deficient mice were inoculated with the recombinant viral vector rTGEVS-MHV-VP7, which replicates in the intestine and spreads to other organs such as liver, spleen and lungs. TGEV-specific antibodies were detected in all the in…

Vocabulary teaching strategies and conceptual representations of words in L2 in children: evidence with novice learners.

2008

Abstract A controversial issue in bilingual research is whether in the early stages of L2 learning, access to the conceptual system involves mediation of L1 lexical representations [Kroll, J. F., & Stewart, E. (1994). Category interference in translation and picture naming: Evidence for asymmetric connections between bilingual memory representations. Journal of Memory and Language, 33, 149–174] or a direct route from the L2 word [Altarriba, J., & Mathis, K. M. (1997). Conceptual and lexical development in second language acquisition. Global initiative for meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia (GLIMP): an international, observational cohort study

2016

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is a major global health problem and pathogens such as meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have become of particular concern in the management of lower respiratory tract infections. However, few data are available on the worldwide prevalence and risk factors for MRSA pneumonia. We aimed to determine the point prevalence of MRSA pneumonia and identify specific MRSA risk factors in community-dwelling patients hospitalised with pneumonia.METHODS: We did an international, multicentre study of community-dwelling, adult patients admitted to hospital with pneumonia who had microbiological tests taken within 24 h of presentation. We recruited investig…

Fractionating auditory priors: A neural dissociation between active and passive experience of musical sounds

2019

Learning, attention and action play a crucial role in determining how stimulus predictions are formed, stored, and updated. Years-long experience with the specific repertoires of sounds of one or more musical styles is what characterizes professional musicians. Here we contrasted active experience with sounds, namely long-lasting motor practice, theoretical study and engaged listening to the acoustic features characterizing a musical style of choice in professional musicians with mainly passive experience of sounds in laypersons. We hypothesized that long-term active experience of sounds would influence the neural predictions of the stylistic features in professional musicians in a distinct…

A New Prognosis Score to Predict Mortality After Acute Pneumonia in Very Elderly Patients

2016

International audience; Objectives: Acute pneumonia (AP) induces an excess of mortality among the elderly. We evaluated the value of a new predictive biomarker index compared to usual prognosis scores for predicting in-hospital and 1-year mortalities in elderly inpatients with AP.Design: Retrospective study in 6 clinical departments of a university hospital.Setting: Burgundy university hospital (France).Participants: All patients aged 75 and over with AP and hospitalized between January 1 and June 30, 2013, in the departments of medicine (5) and intensive care (1) of our university hospital.Measurements: A new index, which we named UBMo, was created by multiplying the uremia (U in the formu…

Kinematic and head morphometric characterisation of spermatozoa from the Brown Caiman (Caiman crocodilus fuscus).

2019

The development of analytical methods for the evaluation of crocodilian semen is an important component for the assessment of male breeding soundness and the development of assisted breeding technology in this taxon. Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) technology is becoming an increasingly common technique in seminal evaluations for animals but there has been no application of this technique for reptilian spermatozoa. The aim of this study was to analyse sperm kinematic and morphometric variables in Caiman crocodilus fuscus semen samples and to determine whether there were sperm subpopulations. Four ejaculates from four sexually mature captive caimans were used for this study. A CASA-M…

Becoming a beer expert: is simple exposure with feedback sufficient to learn beer categories?

2015

Category learning is an important aspect of expertise development which had been little studied in the chemosensory field. The wine literature suggests that through repeated exposure to wines, sensory information is stored by experts as prototypes. The goal of this study was to further explore this issue using beers. We tested the ability of beer consumers to correctly categorize beers from two different categories (top- and bottom-fermented beers) before and after repeated exposure with feedback to beers from these categories. We found that participants learned to identify the category membership of beers to which they have been exposed but were unable to generalize their learning to other…

Low dose of aPCC after the initial treatment in acquired haemophilia A is useful to reduce bleeding relapses: Data from the FAIR registry

2019

Background: Bypassing agents are the first line therapy in patients with acquired haemophilia A (AHA). Activated prothrombin complex concentrate (aPCC) proved to be effective as initial treatment, but 20% of patients (pts) had relapses. aPCC as short-term prophylaxis to reduce subsequent bleeds is still not clear. Aim: To evaluate whether a short-term prophylaxis with low dose of aPCC can reduce bleeding relapses after initial AHA treatment, maintaining safety. Methods: The FAIR Registry is a retrospective-prospective study started on December 2012, that collected data on all pts with AHA treated with aPCC in 12 Italian Haemophilia Centers. All statistical analyses were carried out in the 5…
