Market valuation and acquiring firm performance in the short and long term: Out-of-sample evidence from Spain

2019

We investigate bidder’s short- and long-term performance in periods of high and low valuation market in response to announcements of acquisitions carried out by Spanish listed firms over the period 1991–2016. We find that acquirers of unlisted targets fully react at the announcement date in high valuation periods, meanwhile the underreaction of listed target bidders at the moment of the announcement in low valuation markets is the result of return continuations. In addition, we find that the market reaction do not depend on recent merger history. Therefore, we provide evidence that bidder reaction to acquisitions is not consistent with the predictions of market sentiment (optimism) after c…

Beyond path dependence: Explorative orientation, slack resources, and managerial intentionality to internationalize in SMEs

2015

Abstract Managerial intentionality plays an important role in a firm's selection of its internationalization path. In relation to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), most studies focus on the individual traits that foster managerial intentionality without considering organizational-level antecedents. This study seeks to address this gap by focusing on two organizational antecedents: the firm's exploration and exploitation orientations, and its slack resources. The firm's orientations affect the application of different learning processes, including knowledge acquisition, information interpretation, and knowledge diffusion, and they shape the subjective norms prevalent in the organiza…

Optical and Vibrational Spectra of CsCl-Enriched GeS2-Ga2S3 Glasses

2016

Optical and FTIR spectroscopy was employed to study the properties of 80GeS2-20Ga2S3-CsCl chalcohalide glasses with CsCl additives in a temperature range of 77–293 K. It is shown that CsCl content results in the shift of fundamental absorption edge in the visible region. Vibrational bands in FTIR spectra of (80GeS2-20Ga2S3)100 − х (СsCl) x (x = 5, 10, and 15) are identified near 2500 cm−1, 3700 cm−1,, around 1580 cm−1, and a feature at 1100 cm−1. Low energy shifts of vibrational frequencies in glasses with a higher amount of CsCl can be caused by possible thermal expansion of the lattice and nanovoid agglomeration formed by CsCl additives in the inner structure of the Ge-Ga-S glass.

Energy-Saving Mechatronic System for Fatigue Tests of Materials under Variable-Amplitude Proportional Bending and Torsion

2010

The paper presents structure and principles of operation of the fatigue test stand for specimens subjected to polyharmonic proportional bending and torsion. The stand is equipped with a digital control system based on data acquisition board Daqboard/2000 and LabVIEW environment. The history of polyharmonic loading is a sum of four harmonic components of various amplitudes, frequencies and phases adjusted by means of four rotating disks with unbalanced masses of the inertial vibrator. Application of a computer with the software elaborated by the authors and the control system enables determination of fatigue characteristics of the material under constant or variable amplitude bending, torsio…

A methodology to assess the effect of sweat on infrared thermography data after running: Preliminary study

2020

Abstract The aim of this technical report is to present a preliminary study carried out to define the methodology to be employed for further research on assessing the effect of sweating on infrared thermography and thermal contact sensors after moderate intensity running. Nine recreational runners participated in this preliminary study. Participants ran for 35 min (5 min warm-up and 30 min at a rate of perceived exertion rate of 12 points on the 6–20 points Borg scale). Skin temperature (infrared thermography, Flir E60bx; four thermal contact sensors, IButton DS1923 Hygrochron) and relative humidity (thermal contact sensors) were measured on the anterior thigh on both lower limbs before and…

Advanced time-stamped total data acquisition control front-end for MeV ion beam microscopy and proton beam writing

2013

Many ion-matter interactions exhibit [email protected] time dependences such as, fluorophore emission quenching and ion beam induced charge (IBIC). Conventional event-mode MeV ion microbeam data acquisition systems discard the time information. Here we describe a fast time-stamping data acquisition front-end based on the concurrent processing capabilities of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The system is intended for MeV ion microscopy and MeV ion beam lithography. The speed of the system (>240,000 events s^-^1 for four analogue to digital converters (ADC)) is limited by the ADC throughput and data handling speed of the host computer.

Nondestructive in-line sub-picomolar detection of magnetic nanoparticles in flowing complex fluids

2018

AbstractOver the last decades, the use of magnetic nanoparticles in research and commercial applications has increased dramatically. However, direct detection of trace quantities remains a challenge in terms of equipment cost, operating conditions and data acquisition times, especially in flowing conditions within complex media. Here we present the in-line, non-destructive detection of magnetic nanoparticles using high performance atomic magnetometers at ambient conditions in flowing media. We achieve sub-picomolar sensitivities measuring ~30 nm ferromagnetic iron and cobalt nanoparticles that are suitable for biomedical and industrial applications, under flowing conditions in water and who…

Structural Characterization of Organics Using Manual and Automated Electron Diffraction

2010

In the last decade the importance of transmission electron microscopic studies has become increasingly important with respect to the characterization of organic materials, ranging from small organic molecules to polymers and biological macromolecules. This review will focus on the use of transmission electron microscope to perform electron crystallography experiments, detailing the approaches in acquiring electron crystallographic data. The traditional selected area approach and the recently developed method of automated diffraction tomography (ADT) will be discussed with special attention paid to the handling of electron beam sensitive organic materials.
