Distribution of recent ostracods in inland waters of Sicily (Southern Italy)

From 2003 to 2005, freshwater ostracods were sampled in 67 water bodies of mainland Sicily (Provinces of Agrigento, Caltanisetta, Catania, Enna, Palermo, Messina, Ragusa, Siracusa and Trapani) located from sea level up to 1300 m a.s.l. This survey took into account streams, springs, wells, but especially temporary and ephemeral habitats (e.g., flooded meadows, temporary ponds). Anaesthesia of animals may be useful for different purposes, particularly for veterinary reasons or in experimental research, for manipulation or treatment of immobilized but alive animals. Its use in crustaceans is not uncommon, but it has never been described for Ostracoda. We provide brief and preliminary guidelines on the use of the tricaine mesylate (MS-222) on the widespread freshwater ostracod Eucypris virens and we show that this compound is an effective anaesthetic used as a bath treatment at minimum concentrations of 500 mg L-1. First record of conulariids from the Tērvete Formation, Upper Devonian of Latvia

Phosphatized remains belonging to conulariids have been found in the Middle Famennian (Upper Devonian) deposits of the TÄrvete Formation of Latvia for the first time. The ornamentation pattern and characteristics of the exoskeleton indicate that the conulariids, represented by two incomplete and flattened specimens, belong to a single species within the genus Paraconularia. Paraconularia sp. from the TÄrvete Formation differs from Conularia latviensis Delle from the JoniÅ¡kis Formation in size and details of the morphology of the periderm; however, most probably, the species C. latviensis also belongs to the genus Paraconularia. Punktem wyjścia tekstu jest teza, że o edukacji, która jest przedmiotem pedagogiki, jej profesjonalnych badań i analiz, często się dzisiaj mówi i pisze w sposób potoczny, zdroworozsądkowy. To znacznie utrudnia debatę, stawianie i rozwiązywanie problemów związanych z edukacją. W tekście zaprezentowano typy wiedzy potocznej, jej funkcje, ograniczenia. Pokazano różne ujęcia edukacji - adaptacyjne, emancypacyjne, pajdocentryczne, progresywistyczne. Pokazano, że sposób stawiania problemów edukacji zależy od przyjętej koncepcji. Zaproponowano przezwyciężenie tego zdroworozsądkowego edukacyjnego dyskursu przez dyskurs profesjonalny, oparty na pedagogicznej kulturze uznania.

Sesuvium and Cypselea are closely related succulent genera within the Sesuvioideae (Aizoaceae). Since Cypselea is nested in Sesuvium in molecular studies and both genera share traits separating them from other members of the subfamily, we propose to include Cypselea in Sesuvium. Sesuvium (incl. Cypselea) comprises 14 species and is distributed worldwide with centres of diversity in southern Africa and North and Central America. Systematists and other biodiversity scientists commonly mine these databases for sequence data to use in phylogenetic studies, but such studies generally use only the taxonomic identity of the sequenced tissue, not the specimen identity. Anti-phospholipase A2 and anti-inflammatory activity of Santolina chamaecyparissus

The activity of the Santolina chamaecyparissus methanol extract was tested against the phospholipase A2 (PLA2)-induced mouse paw edema and in vitro inhibition of PLA2 activity. After fractionation, only the dichloromethane extract was active against the PLA2 in vitro test. In addition, it reduced the edema induced by arachidonic acid, and by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate in a multidose test. After chromatography on silicagel and gel filtration on Sephadex, and using an in vitro anti-PLA2 assay-guided process, we have isolated and identified from the dichloromethane extract the flavone nepetin and four sesquiterpenes.
