Localization of parvalbumin, calretinin, and calbindin D-28k in identified extraocular motoneurons and internuclear neurons of the cat

Calcium-binding proteins have been shown to be excellent markers of specific neuronal populations. We aimed to characterize the expression of calcium-binding proteins in identified populations of the cat extraocular motor nuclei by means of immunohistochemistry against parvalbumin, calretinin, and calbindin D-28k. Abducens, medial rectus, and trochlear motoneurons were retrogradely labeled with horseradish peroxidase from their corresponding muscles. Oculomotor and abducens internuclear neurons were retrogradely labeled after horseradish peroxidase injection into either the abducens or the oculomotor nucleus, respectively. The morphology, fine structure, and degree of colocalization with GABA, somatostatin, and neuropeptide Y of parvalbumin-containing cells were studied with immunocytochemistry in the cerebral cortex of the lizard Podarcis hispanica. Parvalbumin-containing cells make up a morphologically heterogeneous population of spine-free neurons, displaying the morphological features of nonprincipal cells previously described in Golgi studies. Functional interactions between members of the REPAT family of insect pathogen-induced proteins

Studies on the transcriptional response to pathogens in the insect larval gut have shown the regulation of several genes after the infection. Repat (REsponse to PAThogens) genes were first identified in Spodoptera exigua midgut as being up-regulated in response to the exposure to Bacillus thuringiensis toxins and baculovirus. Recently, new members of the REPAT family showed a constitutive up-regulation in a B. thuringiensis-resistant population. Vasostatin-1 (VS-1), the N-terminal fragment derived from the cleavage of chromogranin A (CgA), has been shown to exert several biological activities on several tissues and organs. Recently, it has been reported that human recombinant VS-1 (STA-CGA(1-78)) may alter myocardial contractility in eel, frog., and rat hearts. Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity in the guinea pig pineal organ.

Relatively little is known about mammalian pineal neuropeptides. In the present study neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) was examined in the guinea pig pineal gland. NPY-LI was restricted to few intrapineal nerve fibers of faint fluorescence intensity. They showed no preferential localization with regard to the different pineal portions. As catecholaminergic fibers are abundant in the guinea pig pineal gland, the scarcity of NPY-LI fibers indicates that in the pineal colocalization of noradrenaline and NPY-LI is not a regular feature, in contrast to other organs. The possibility exists that in the pineal NPY-LI fibers are not of peripheral sympathetic but of central origin.

Pro-enkephalin opioid peptides are abundant in porcine and bovine splenic nerves, but absent from nerves of rat, mouse, hamster, and guinea-pig spleen

The opioidergic innervation of the mammalian spleen and possible species differences were investigated. Light-microscopic immunohistochemistry revealed that splenic nerves of bovine and porcine spleen, but not of rat, mouse, hamster and guinea-pig spleen contained proenkephalin-derived opioidergic innervation. Immunoreactivity to both prodynorphin and pro-opiomelanocortin was absent from splenic nerves. In bovine and porcine spleen, fibers immunoreactive for met-enkephalin, met-enkephalin-Arg-Phe, met-enkephalin-Arg-Gly-Leu, leu-enkephalin and peptide F formed perivascular plexus, traveled in trabecular connective tissue, and extended into the capsule. The medicalization of suicide in 19th century Spain: theoretical, professional and cultural aspects

This paper analyzes the medicalization process of suicide in Spain during the 19th century. It describes the transition of suicide seen as an act of free will to a model, developed by mental doctors, which considered it a pathological behavior. Against this model, other conservative positions from the fields of Law and Medicine continued to defend the traditional view.
