Derived variables calculated from similar joint responses: some characteristics and examples
1995
Abstract A technique (Cox and Wermuth, 1992) is reviewed for finding linear combinations of a set of response variables having special relations of linear conditional independence with a set of explanatory variables. A theorem in linear algebra is used both to examine conditions in which the derived variables take a specially simple form and lead to reduced computations. Examples are discussed of medical and psychological investigations in which the method has aided interpretation.
A Stochastic Approach to Quantum Statistics Distributions: Theoretical Derivation and Monte Carlo Modelling
2009
Abstract. We present a method aimed at a stochastic derivation of the equilibrium distribution of a classical/quantum ideal gas in the framework of the canonical ensemble. The time evolution of these ideal systems is modelled as a series of transitions from one system microstate to another one and thermal equilibrium is reached via a random walk in the single-particle state space. We look at this dynamic process as a Markov chain satisfying the condition of detailed balance and propose a variant of the Monte Carlo Metropolis algorithm able to take into account indistinguishability of identical quantum particles. Simulations performed on different two-dimensional (2D) systems are revealed to…
Fitting generalized linear models with unspecified link function: A P-spline approach
2008
Generalized linear models (GLMs) outline a wide class of regression models where the effect of the explanatory variables on the mean of the response variable is modelled throughout the link function. The choice of the link function is typically overlooked in applications and the canonical link is commonly used. The estimation of GLMs with unspecified link function is discussed, where the linearity assumption between the link and the linear predictor is relaxed and the unspecified relationship is modelled flexibly by means of P-splines. An estimating algorithm is presented, alternating estimation of two working GLMs up to convergence. The method is applied to the analysis of quit behavior of…
Influence functions and efficiencies of the canonical correlation and vector estimates based on scatter and shape matrices
2006
In this paper, the influence functions and limiting distributions of the canonical correlations and coefficients based on affine equivariant scatter matrices are developed for elliptically symmetric distributions. General formulas for limiting variances and covariances of the canonical correlations and canonical vectors based on scatter matrices are obtained. Also the use of the so-called shape matrices in canonical analysis is investigated. The scatter and shape matrices based on the affine equivariant Sign Covariance Matrix as well as the Tyler's shape matrix serve as examples. Their finite sample and limiting efficiencies are compared to those of the Minimum Covariance Determinant estima…
Microcanonical foundation of nonextensivity and generalized thermostatistics based on the fractality of the phase space
2005
We develop a generalized theory of (meta)equilibrium statistical mechanics in the thermodynamic limit valid for both smooth and fractal phase spaces. In the former case, our approach leads naturally to Boltzmann-Gibbs standard thermostatistics while, in the latter, Tsallis thermostatistics is straightforwardly obtained as the most appropriate formalism. We first focus on the microcanonical ensemble stressing the importance of the limit $t \to \infty$ on the form of the microcanonical measure. Interestingly, this approach leads to interpret the entropic index $q$ as the box-counting dimension of the (microcanonical) phase space when fractality is considered.
Das kompositorische Verfahren in Jean Moutons Quadrupelkanon Nesciens mater virgo virum
2012
Cultural Paradigm and Popular Canon: The Discourse on Nation in Nineteenth-century Music of Slavic Mitteleuropa
2016
Pojav kanona je treba analizirati v okviru, v katerem sta kozmopolitizem in nacionalizem soobstajala v prepletu uporabne in avtonomne glasbe, kar presega zamejevanje v kategorije podrejenosti, prirejenosti in avtonomije. The national identity of Slavic Mitteleuropa is examined by means of a new approach to different cultural paradigms, namely the historical events out of which th…
Microcosmi. Il teatro di Seneca a Palermo tra marginalità e canone
2012
In the last thirty years the study of Seneca’s theatre has become central in Italy, and particularly in the microcosm of Palermo University. This paper analyses the processes that have originated this development and attempts to document the consequences of the shift of Seneca’s theatre from the margins to the centre of the research interests. Three aspects will be taken into account: the renewal of the Latin literary canon in academic education, the diffusion of the study of Seneca at school, and the contribution of Seneca’s studies to the construction of relevant academic identities in contemporary scientific debate.
Subharmonic variation of the leafwise Poincar metric
2003
Let X be a compact complex algebraic surface and let F be a holomorphic foliation, possibly with singularities, on X. On each leaf of F we put its Poincare metric (this will be defined below in more precise terms). We thus obtain a (singular) hermitian metric on the tangent bundle TF of F , and dually a (singular) hermitian metric on the canonical bundle KF = T ∗ F of F . The main aim of this paper is to prove that this metric on KF has positive curvature, in the sense of currents. Of course, the positivity of the curvature in the leaf direction is an immediate consequence of the definitions; the nontrivial fact is that the curvature is positive also in the directions transverse to the leaf…
DEFINING MACROINVERTEBRATE ASSEMBLAGE TYPES OF HEADWATER STREAMS: IMPLICATIONS FOR BIOASSESSMENT AND CONSERVATION
2003
We used data from 235 boreal headwater streams in Finland to examine whether macroinvertebrate assemblages constitute clearly definable types, and how well biologically defined assemblage types can be predicted using environmental variables. Two- way indicator species analysis produced 10 assemblage types, which differed significantly from each other (multiresponse permutation procedure, MRPP). However, based on MRPP and nonmetric multidimensional scaling, there was wide variation among sites within each assemblage type, and high degrees of overlap among assemblage types. Such continuous variation was also evidenced by the low number of effective indicator taxa (indicator value method) for …
