Changes in Surface Free Energy and Surface Conductivity of Carbon Nanotube/Polyimide Nanocomposite Films Induced by UV Irradiation.

2021

Changes in surface energy and electrical conductivity of polyimide (PI)-based nanocomposite films filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) induced by UV exposure are gaining considerable interest in microelectronic, aeronautical, and aerospace applications. However, the underlying mechanism of PI photochemistry and oxidation reactions induced by UV irradiation upon the surface in the presence of CNTs is still not clear. Here, we probed the interplay between CNTs and PIs under UV exposure in the surface properties of CNT/PI nanocomposite films. Changes in contact angles and surface electrical conductivity at the surface of CNT/PI nanocomposite films after UV exposure were measured. The unpaired e…

Anomalous water diffusion in epoxy/carbon nanoparticle composites

2019

Abstract Water absorption-desorption-resorption and swelling were studied for a DGEBA-based amine-cured epoxy resin filled with four types of carbon nanoparticles: multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), graphite nano-platelets (GnP), expanded graphite platelets, and carbon black. Nanocomposites are characterised by lower diffusivity (down to 20% for epoxy/GnP) and increased water sorption capacity compared to the neat epoxy. Anomalous water absorption and swelling of nanocomposites is finely described by the diffusion-relaxation model. The relaxation times, considered as quantitative indicators of changes in segmental mobility of the polymer, increased with addition of nanoparticles and decrea…

Improvement of oxidation resistance of polymer-based nanocomposites through sonication of carbonaceous nanoparticles

2020

Abstract The work aim is focused on two different aspects: first, the investigation of the effect of extended ultra-sound-assisted treatment (us) of carbonaceous nanoparticles, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CB), on their radical scavenging activity, and second, the investigation of the oxidative resistance of polymer-based nanocomposites, containing us-treated CNTs and CB. Particularly, the CNTs and CB have been subjected to us sonication for different time intervals and the performed analysis reveals that both kinds of nanoparticles show decreased average hydrodynamic diameters and large content of surface defects. Really, the increased content of CNTs and CB defects, a…

A stochastic shape and orientation model for fibres with an application to carbon nanotubes

2012

Methods are introduced for analysing the shape and orientation of planar fibres from greyscale images of fibrous systems. The sequence of image processing techniques needed for segmentation of fibres is described. The identified fibres were interpreted as deformed line segments for which two shape and two orientation parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood method. The methods introduced are shown to perform quite well for simulated systems of deformed line segments with known properties. They were applied to TEM images of carbon nanotubes embedded in polycarbonate.

Raman imaging and spectroscopy of heterogeneous individual carbon nanotubes

2003

Isolated single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown by chemical vapor deposition methods on Fe/Mo/Al2O3 catalysts, which were patterned by microcontact printing. The pattern allowed us to trace back and investigate the same isolated CNT by atomic-force (AFM) and confocal Raman microscopy with different excitation wavelengths. A change of the Raman intensity could be correlated with structural defects revealing that the molecular structure of the tubes is changing along the tube axis. By investigating the same tube segments with different excitation energies, we found that the D-line of isolated tubes shows a strong dispersive effect of 45−50 cm-1/eV. In contrast, the spectral position…

Study of the role of particle-particle dipole interaction in dielectrophoretic devices for biomarkers identification

2015

A three dimensional Coupled Monte Carlo-Poisson method has been used to evaluate the impact of particle-particle dipole interactions in the equilibrium distribution of a system of uncharged polarizable particles suspended in a static liquid medium under the action of an oscillating non-uniform electric field generated by polynomial electrodes. We compare the simulated distributions with experimental ones both for micro- (MDA-MB-231 breast tumor cells) and nano-(multiwall carbon nanotubes) particles. In both cases the equilibrium distributions near the electrodes are dominated by dipole interactions which locally enhance the DEP effect and promote long particles chains.

Nano-hybrids based on quercetin and carbon nanotubes with excellent anti-oxidant activity

2016

Abstract Multi-functional nano-hybrids based on Quercetin (Q), a natural antioxidant, and functionalized Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have been formulated and used to prepare Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE)-based nanocomposites. The study of the nanocomposites rheological behaviour shows that the immobilization of Q molecules onto CNTs outer surface leads to a beneficial effect on the state of the interface between polymer and nanoparticles. Additionally, the investigation of the thermo- and photo-oxidation processes reveals that the hybrids nanoparticles are able to exert a remarkable stabilizing action, due to strong physical interaction between Q and CNTs. In particular, the…

Water-soluble carbon nanotubes through sugar azide functionalization

2011

In this work we report a covalent functionalization of pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) directly with three sugar azides, 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl, 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-d-galactopyranosyl or 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-d-mannopyranosyl azide. Microwave-assisted functionalization was carried out for SWCNTs prepared with the HiPCO method. The as-prepared, new type of sugar-functionalized SWCNTs were analyzed by Raman and IR spectroscopy. Deacetylation of the functionalized tubes by sodium methoxide yielded nitrogen-linked, sugar-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that formed stable dispersions in water. Reactivity of the sugar azides towards SWCNTs was es…

An insight into the functionalisation of carbon nanotubes by diazonium chemistry: Towards a controlled decoration

2014

The derivatisation of materials including iron, gold, and carbon by addition of diazonium salts is a reliable process to tune their interfacial interaction with the surrounding media. In this regard, the functionalisation of carbon nanostructures by diazonium chemistry is a versatile strategy to obtain soluble nanomaterials with degrees of functionalisation among the highest ever reported. Starting from these premises we have studied the functionalisation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by addition of the aryl diazonium salts generated in situ by treatment of 4-methoxyaniline with isopentylnitrite. Following a thorough purification and characterisation protocol (UV-vis, TGA, ATR-IR, cyclic…

Two-terminal nanoelectromechanical devices based on germanium nanowires.

2009

A two-terminal bistable device, having both ON and OFF regimes, has been demonstrated with Ge nanowires using an in situ TEM-STM technique. The function of the device is based on delicately balancing electrostatic, elastic, and adhesion forces between the nanowires and the contacts, which can be controlled by the applied voltage. The operation and failure conditions of the bistable device were investigated, i.e. the influence of nanowire diameter, the surface oxide layer on the nanowires and the current density. During ON/OFF cycles the Ge nanowires were observed to be more stable than carbon nanotubes, working at similar conditions, due to the higher mechanical stability of the nanowires. …
