A method for measuring low-weight carboxylic acids from biosolid compost

Concentration of low-weight carboxylic acids (LWCA) is one of the important parameters that should be taken into consideration when compost is applied as soil improver for plant cultivation, because high amounts of LWCA can be toxic to plants. The present work describes a method for analysis of LWCA in compost as a useful tool for monitoring compost quality and safety. The method was tested on compost samples of two different ages: 3 (immature) and 6 (mature) months old. Acids from compost samples were extracted at high pH, filtered, and freeze-dried. Phytotoxicity of low-weight carboxylic acids.

Abstract Presence of low-weight carboxylic acids (LWCAs) can be the reason for phytotoxicity of green manures, treated bio-waste or digestates from biogas production applied to soils. As the phytotoxic concentrations of LWCA are poorly known, this work presents data on six acids (C 1 C 6 : formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, and caproic). Phytotoxicity was measured in acute (72 or 120 h) and subchronic (21 d) assays for seed germination, seedling elongation, and plant growth for garden cress Lepidium sativum and ryegrass Lolium multiflorum . Conformationally restricted, orthogonally protected 2,4-diaminocarboxylates with a cyclopentane skeleton were efficiently synthesized from beta-lactam 6, the syntheses involving strategies of diastereoselective epoxidation of the beta-lactam and the corresponding monoprotected amino esters with opposite selectivities followed by regioselective opening of the oxirane ring with sodium azide. The enantiomers were also prepared. This new class of compounds can be regarded not only as conformationally constrained beta,gamma-diamino acid derivatives but also as potential functionalized carbocyclic nucleoside precursors.

Effect of commercial mineral-based additives on composting and compost quality.

Abstract The effectiveness of two commercial additives meant to improve the composting process was studied in a laboratory-scale experiment. Calcium binding to fixed charge groups confined over nanoscale regions is relevant to ion equilibrium and transport in the ionic channels of the cell membranes and artificial nanopores. Rational Design of a Carrier Protein for the Production of Recombinant Toxic Peptides in Escherichia coli

Commercial uses of bioactive peptides require low cost, effective methods for their production. We developed a new carrier protein for high yield production of recombinant peptides in Escherichia coli very well suited for the production of toxic peptides like antimicrobial peptides. GKY20, a short antimicrobial peptide derived from the C-terminus of human thrombin, was fused to the C-terminus of Onconase, a small ribonuclease (104 amino acids), which efficiently drove the peptide into inclusion bodies with very high expression levels (about 200-250 mg/L). Chemical composition and biological activity of Salvia verbenaca essential oil

Salvia verbenaca L. (syn. S. minore) is a perennial herb known in the traditional medicine of Sicily as “spaccapetri” and is used to resolve cases of kidney stones, chewing the fresh leaves or in decoction. The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from aerial parts of S. verbenaca collected in Piano Battaglia (Sicily) on July 2009, was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The oil was strongly characterized by fatty acids (39.5%) and carbonylic compounds (21.2%), with hexadecanoic acid (23.1%), ( Z)-9-octadecenoic acid (11.1%) and benzaldehyde (7.3%) as the main constituents. Fumarate regulation of gene expression in Escherichia coli by the DcuSR (dcuSR genes) two-component regulatory system.

ABSTRACT In Escherichia coli the genes encoding the anaerobic fumarate respiratory system are transcriptionally regulated by C 4 -dicarboxylates. The regulation is effected by a two-component regulatory system, DcuSR, consisting of a sensory histidine kinase (DcuS) and a response regulator (DcuR). DcuS and DcuR are encoded by the dcuSR genes (previously yjdHG ) at 93.7 min on the calculated E. coli map. Inactivation of the dcuR and dcuS genes caused the loss of C 4 -dicarboxylate-stimulated synthesis of fumarate reductase ( frdABCD genes) and of the anaerobic fumarate-succinate antiporter DcuB ( dcuB gene).
