Impact of Aortic Stenosis on Myofiber Stress: Translational Application of Left Ventricle-Aortic Coupling Simulation

2020

The severity of aortic stenosis (AS) has traditionally been graded by measuring hemodynamic parameters of transvalvular pressure gradient, ejection jet velocity, or estimating valve orifice area. Recent research has highlighted limitations of these criteria at effectively grading AS in presence of left ventricle (LV) dysfunction. We hypothesized that simulations coupling the aorta and LV could provide meaningful insight into myocardial biomechanical derangements that accompany AS. A realistic finite element model of the human heart with a coupled lumped-parameter circulatory system was used to simulate AS. Finite element analysis was performed with Abaqus FEA. An anisotropic hyperelastic mo…

European Society of Hypertension recommendations for conventional, ambulatory and home blood pressure measurement

2003

IntroductionOver the past 20 years or so, the accuracy of the conventional Riva-Rocci/Korotkoff technique of blood pressure measurement has been questioned and efforts have been made to improve the technique with automated devices. In the same period, recognition of the phenomenon of white-coat hype

Muscle architecture is an important component of muscle function, and recent studies have shown changes in muscle architecture with fatigue. The stretch-shortening cycle is a natural way to study human locomotion, but little is known about how muscle architecture is affected by this type of exercise. This study investigated potential changes in medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle architecture after exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle exercise. Male athletes (n = 10) performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and maximal drop jump (DJ) tests before and after an exercise task consisting of 100 maximal DJs followed by successive rebound jumping to 70% of the initial maximal height. The exerci…

Rheological and metabolic leucocyte determinants in diabetes mellitus

1995

In diabetics of type I and 2 we examined, in resting white blood cells (WBC), the filtration parameters (Initial Relative Flow Rate - lRFR, Clogging Rate - CR) employing the St. George Filtrometer, the polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) membrane fluidity, the PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content and the PMN membrane cholesterol/phospholipid ratio (C/PL). From the obtained data, it is evident that, while the lRFR of unfractionated WBC distinguishes normals from diabetics of type 1 and 2, the fIltration parameters of the PMN and mononuclear cells (MN) do not show any significant difference. PMN membrane fluidity, PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content and PMN C/PL do not discriminate normals from diabetics of type 1 an…

Clinical conditions responsible for hyperviscosity and skin ulcers complications

2017

In this brief review, we have examined some clinical conditions that result to be associated to an altered hemorheological profile and at times accompanied by skin ulcers. This skin condition may be observed in patients with the following condtions, such as primary polycythemic hyperviscosity (polycythemia, thrombocytemia) treated with hydroxyurea, primary plasma hyperviscosity (multiple myeloma, cryoglobulinemia, cryofibrinogenemia, dysfibrinogenemia, and connective tissue diseases), primary sclerocythemic hyperviscosity (hereditary spherocytosis, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease). In addition, it may be present in patients with secondary hyperviscosity conditions such as diabetes mell…
