Restoring Harmony in the Lifeworld? : Identity, Learning, and Leaving Preelite Sport
2020
Sport provides many youth participants with a central life project, and yet very few eventually fulfill their athletic dreams, which may lead them to disengage from sport entirely. Many studies have explored the processes of athletic retirement, but little is known about how youth athletes actually reconstruct their relationship with sport and embodiment postretirement. The authors explored these issues in the story of “Pilvi,” a Finnish alpine skier who disengaged from sport in her late adolescence. Employing an existential-phenomenological approach, they conducted six low-structured interviews with Pilvi, combined with visual methods, and identified key themes relating to the body, space,…

University Transitions and Gender: From Choice of Studies to Academic Career Development
2014
Based on the results of the authors' research using a case study of a Spanish university, the sociological component of gender is an important factor in building transitions at university. When the authors refer to university transitions they are talking about two periods. Firstly, they refer to the transition of undergraduate students from upper secondary education. The authors detect differences in the choices of studies, in the identification of professional models and in the university admission process. Secondly, they refer to the transition from research grant-holders to teaching and research staff. They explore the construction of social expectations and representations that researc…
Personality Antecedents of Career Orientation and Stability among Women Compared to Men
1999
Abstract The study was part of the Jyvaskyla Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development in which 151 women and 160 men were followed from age 8 through age 36. Data were collected at ages 8, 14, 27, and 36 using teacher ratings, interviews, and personality inventories. The participants' career paths are defined in terms of “career orientation,” which is a composite score made up of four indicators: occupational status, education, present work situation, and career stability. In accordance with our hypotheses, the results for both sexes showed that high career orientation was explained by personality characteristics indicating high self-control of emotions (constructiveness, st…

Development and first application of the athlete adaptation inventory: An exploratory study
2020
Geographic mobility has become an essential part of athletes’ career development and athletic migration is rapidly increasing. However, research on psychological aspects of athletes’ transnational mobility is lacking in the literature. In this study we describe the development of the Athlete Adaptation Inventory (AAI) and examine its first application in a sample of 143 professional and amateur elite migrant athletes. In summary, results indicate that cultural adaptation challenges were perceived as slightly difficult. However, female athletes reported more difficulties than male athletes in the sport domain, whereas male and team sport athletes reported more challenges in the non-sport dom…
Immobility in appearance only: Ricoeur and identity dynamics in workplace experiences
2016
International audience; Immobility in one’s career, marked by a long period of stability in the same position, is not synonymous with the absence of identity mobility, on the contrary. This can be deduced from the information collected from 23 employees in a French association in the social sector. In this research we draw on the notions of idem, ipse and capacity developed by Ricoeur. A model of the cyclical identity dynamics in daily work experience has been developed, while contributing to the topics of identification and career choice. It also questions the impact of dominant social norms that favour professional mobility on managerial practices and deprive employees from a critical for…
