Hormonal and nutritional control of L‐carnitine uptake in myoblastic C2C12 cells
2008
L-Carnitine plays an important role in skeletal muscle bioenergetics, and its bioavailability and thus its import may be crucial for muscle function. We studied the effect of thyroid hormone, insulin, and iron overload, hormones and nutrients known to alter muscle metabolism, on L-carnitine import into C2C12 cells. We report here L-carnitine uptake is increased by thyroid hormones and decreased by iron. Insulin was found to be ineffective in altering the L-carnitine uptake.
Modifications induced on the amygdaloid paroxysmal activity by entopeduncolar or nigral injection of kainic acid, in the cat.
1983
Entopeduncolar or nigral injection of kainic acid determines an early decrease of the evoked amygdaloid paroxysmal activity and a later increase of the after discharge duration. This biphasic effect is likely due to the structural analogy of the drug with monosodium glutamate, a neuroexcitant amino acid. The data suggest that the basal ganglia exert a tonic control on the amygdaloid activity.
Diet-disease relationships : recent advances in nutritional epidemiology
2020
Nutritional epidemiology currently studies the diet-disease relationships. In order to evaluate these associations, an accurate estimation of nutritional exposure is essential. Traditional dietary questionnaires are being complemented with the measurement of nutritional biomarkers. New methodologies, including the use of new dietary assessments, metabolomics for increasing the quantity and quality of biomarkers, and statistical approaches to combine both techniques, are required to move forward this field. In this review, we have selected five of the more relevant accomplishments in this field as examples of the importance of dietary factors in the prevention of non-communicable diseases. T…
Acetyl-L-Carnitine Supplementation and the Treatment of Depressive Symptoms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
2017
Objective: Deficiency of acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC) seems to play a role in the risk of developing depression, indicating a dysregulation of fatty acid transport across the inner membrane of mitochondria. However, data about ALC supplementation in humans are limited. We thus conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the effect of ALC on depressive symptoms across randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: A literature search in major databases, without language restriction, was undertaken from inception until 30 December 2016. Eligible studies were RCTs of ALC alone or in combination with antidepressant medications, with a control group taking placebo/no intervention or…
Short term treatment by fenofibrate enhances oxidative activities towards longchain fatty acids in the liver of lean zucker rats
1990
Lean Zucker rats were dosed orally for 1 week with fenofibrate (100 mg/kg/day). Liver weights of treated rats, expressed as per cent of body weight, were increased, while protein, DNA and triacylglycerol contents were not changed to any great extent per gram of liver, but increased when expressed per whole liver. Compared with the control animals, activities of fatty acid oxidase, of the peroxisomal fatty acid-oxidizing system and of catalase were markedly enhanced by fenofibrate, both per gram of liver and per total liver, while urate oxidase activity was slightly depressed when expressed per gram of liver. The activity of cytochrome c oxidase used as a mitochondrial marker was only higher…
Therapeutic management of the odontogenic keratocyst. An energetic approach with a conservative perspective and review of the current therapeutic opt…
2020
Background Odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) are cystic lesions appearing in the jaws, usually asymptomatic with a progressive growth into the bone. Many of them are diagnosed by a routine radiological examination. Material and methods This study reports a 12-year-old girl that presented an asymptomatic large radiolucent unilocular lesion associated to the crown of 3.8 that caused displacement of the molar and the inferior alveolar canal. Differential diagnosis included OKC, unicystic ameloblastoma, ameloblastic fibroma, dentigerous cyst and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst. Two surgical interventions were performed; first, a marsupialization, and 10 months after, the third molar extraction pl…
The consumption of a bread enriched with dietary fibre and l-carnitine improves glucose homoeostasis and insulin sensitivity in patients with metabol…
2015
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a bakery product enriched with dietary fibre and L-carnitine in countering glucose homoeostasis and insulin sensitivity in patients with and without MetS. This was a 12-week, double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial employing fifty-four subjects (28 with MetS and 26 without MetS). After one month (run-in period), subjects were divided into two intervention groups: one received dietary fibre (5.59 g of soluble fibre and 9.49 g of insoluble fibre) plus 2325 mg of L-carnitine enriched bread (n = 26) and the other received placebo bread (n = 28). Anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters inflammatory markers and LDL subfra…
Role of carnoy’s solution in the treatment of keratocystic odontogenic tumor: A systematic review
2016
Introduction and Objective The keratocystic odontogenic tumor is a benign but aggressive neoplasm. As enucleation alone obtains high recurrence rates, some adjuvant treatments such as Carnoy’s solution have been proposed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reduction of recurrences with the use of Carnoy’s solution as adjuvant in the treatment of keratocystic odontogenic tumors. Material and Methods An electronic search in Pubmed (MEDLINE), ScienceDirect and Cochrane databases was conducted with the key words “odontogenic keratocyst”, “keratocystic odontogenic tumor”, “carnoy’s solution”, “treatment” and “enucleation”. The inclusion criteria were clinical studies using Carnoy’s solutio…
Mechanisms of population declines in boreal forest grouse

Hengissäsäilyminen on päinvastoin jopa parantunut, …
