Metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb arthrodesis using intramedullary interlocking screws XMCP™

Abstract The study objective was to assess the results of a thumb metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) arthrodesis using intramedullary interlocking screws at 25°, XMCP ™ (Extremity Medical, Parsippany, NJ). Radiographs evaluated the angle of arthrodesis, time of fusion and fixation of the implant. Clinical and functional outcomes were assessed using the DASH questionnaire and the VAS scale. Any complications found during surgery or the follow-up period were noted. We studied 9 patients. The mean follow-up was 27.6 months. Riella (Riellaceae, Sphaerocarpales) is a genus of aquatic liverworts with disjunct range in areas of Mediterranean-type climates. Riella has been traditionally subdivided into two subgenera, subgenus Riella, whose plants show smooth or papillose female involucres and Trabutiella, whose plants show winged female involucres. To date only three species of Riella are known in France, all belonging to subgenus Riella. [EN] The phenology and natural enemies of Macrohomotoma gladiata (Kuwayama) (Hemiptera. Homotomidae) on Ficus microcarpa L. in Valencia (Spain) were studied in 2013. During the study, all immature instars of the pest were found on infested shoots indicating overlapping generations. However, two consistent increases in the proportion of the first two nymphal instars were detected in early March and June, possibly suggesting the beginning of spring and summer generations. The effects of long-term, low-dose ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on immune functions of two fish species representing different taxonomic groups, carp (Cyprinus carpio) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), were assessed in this study. The fish were exposed to 7, 20 or 60 mJ cm(-2) UVB three times per week, for 6 weeks. In carp, UVB exposure affected the respiratory burst activity of blood and head kidney phagocytes, differential blood leukocyte counts and blood chemistry. Phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated in vitro proliferation responses of blood and head kidney lymphocytes, however, remained unchanged. Introduction The SNAC wrist (Scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse) is one of the complications following scaphoid fractures treated conservatively and one of the causes of wrist arthritis that the hand surgeon has to face most frequently. For painful, dysfunctional, posttraumatic metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints, the free vascularized toe joint transfer may represent a good solution. Successful reconstruction is potentially limited, however, by 2 features of the traditional vascularized metatarsophalangeal (MTP) transfer: inadequate arc of flexion and insufficient soft tissue coverage. The solution to both of these dilemmas lies in the manner of utilizing the donor site. Because of its innate hyperextensibility, rotating the MTP 180° volar to dorsal provides the greatest arc of flexion in the reconstructed MCP. Many teleost species respond with fright reactions to olfactory cues from injured skin of conspecifics, but they may also display responses to skin extracts of heterospecific fish. In the present study, we exposed crucian carp to skin extracts of conspecifics and three cross-order species of fish (brown trout, pike, and perch). Behavioural experiments showed that conspecific skin extracts induced fright reactions in crucian carp; extracts of brown trout induced such behaviour less frequently, while extracts of perch and pike were poor inducers of fright responses. Summary For the first time, the simultaneous and bilateral occurrence of two variants of the extensors of the fingers, M. extensor digiti medii and M. extensor digitorum brevis, is reported. The extensor of the middle finger arises from the distal fourth of the radius and runs to the base of the proximal phalanx. The short extensor of the fingers arises from the metacarpal region and inserts into the dorsal aponeurosis. Both muscles are innervated by the R. profundus n. radialis.
