Expression of two major surface proteins of Staphylococcus saprophyticus, the haemagglutinin and the Staphylococcus saprophyticus surface-associated protein (Ssp), requires carefully defined culture conditions. The Ssp is produced when bacteria are grown on agar, whereas expression of the haemagglutinin requires growth in broth. We sought to identify the environmental signals that are responsible for this modulation. Varying the pH, the osmolarity of the growth medium or the temperature did not influence expression of the proteins. A lipid transfer protein binds to a receptor involved in the control of plant defence responses

AbstractLipid transfer proteins (LTPs) and elicitins are both able to load and transfer lipidic molecules and share some structural and functional properties. While elicitins are known as elicitors of plant defence mechanisms, the biological function of LTP is still an enigma. We show that a wheat LTP1 binds with high affinity sites. Binding and in vivo competition experiments point out that these binding sites are common to LTP1 and elicitins and confirm that they are the biological receptors of elicitins. A mathematical analysis suggests that these receptors could be represented by an allosteric model corresponding to an oligomeric structure with four identical subunits.

The expression of gal operon in Escherichia coli is driven by two promoters, P1 and P2 separated by 5 bp. The transcription initiated from the P2 generates a large amount of abortive transcripts to produce a comparable amount of full-length transcript as P1 in vitro. Bax and Bid are proapoptotic proteins of the Bcl-2 family that regulate the release of apoptogenic factors from mitochondria. Although they localize constitutively in the cytoplasm, their apoptotic function is exerted at the mitochondrial outer membrane, and is related to their ability to form transbilayer pores. Pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs) are small helical proteins found in sensorial organs, particularly in the antennae, of moth and other insect species. They were proposed to solubilize and carry the hydrophobic pheromonal compounds through the antennal lymph to receptors, participating thus in the peri-receptor events of signal transduction. The x-ray structure of Bombyx mori PBP (BmorPBP), from male antennae, revealed a six-helix fold forming a cavity that contains the pheromone bombykol. Cryptogein is a small 10 kDa elicitor produced by the phytoparasitic oomycete Phytophthora cryptogea. The protein also displays a sterol carrier activity. The native protein crystallizes in space group P4(1)22, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 46.51, c = 134.9 A (diffraction limit: 2.1 A). Its complex with cholesterol crystallizes in space group C222(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 30.96, b = 94.8, c = 65.3 A and a resolution enhanced to 1.45 A. The large inner non-specific hydrophobic cavity is able to accommodate a large variety of 3-beta-hydroxy sterols. Cryptogein probably acts as a sterol shuttle helping the pathogen to grow and complete its life cycle.

Hematopoietic progenitor kinase 1 (HPK1) is implicated in signaling downstream of the T cell receptor. Its non-catalytic, C-terminal half contains several prolinerich motifs, which have been shown to interact with different SH3 domain-containing adaptor proteins in vitro. One of these, Mona/Gads, was also shown to bind HPK1 in mouse T cells in vivo. The psychrotrophic bacterium Pseudomonas fragi was subjected to cold shocks from 30 or 20 to 5 degrees C. The downshifts were followed by a lag phase before growth resumed at a characteristic 5 degrees C growth rate. The analysis of protein patterns by two-dimentional gel electrophoresis revealed overexpression of 25 or 17 proteins and underexpression of 12 proteins following the 30- or 20-to-5 degrees C shift, respectively. The two downshifts shared similar variations of synthesis of 20 proteins.
