Equivalence classes of permutations modulo descents and left-to-right maxima
2014
Abstract In a recent paper [2], the authors provide enumerating results for equivalence classes of permutations modulo excedances. In this paper we investigate two other equivalence relations based on descents and left-to-right maxima. Enumerating results are presented for permutations, involutions, derangements, cycles and permutations avoiding one pattern of length three.

City profile: Valencia
2009
Abstract The historically agrarian and provincial city of Valencia has recently been transformed into a Spanish regional capital, a Mediterranean cultural and economic center, and a major tourism destination. Valencia’s engagement with globalization and European integration has unfolded amidst complex regional politics, marked by vigorous debates about cultural difference, political autonomy, and official bilingualism (Castilian Spanish and Valenciano/Catalan). Here we survey the city’s two millennia of historical development, explore recent urban changes through five emblematic urban landscapes, and briefly discuss major urban policy and planning challenges facing the city. Valencia is a p…
Competitiveness and interregional as well as international trade: The case of Catalonia
2010
Recent years have seen a surge of interest among industrial organization economists in using data on international trade flows as windows into competitiveness. For countries that are at least mid sized (e g., Spain), interregional trade tends to be as large as or significantly larger than international trade. The case of Catalonia, a Spanish region, illustrates how ignoring interregional flows can lead to erroneous inferences about a region's external competitiveness. Accounting for Catalonia's interregional as well as international flows shifts what is generally assessed to be a chronic trade deficit in goods into a surplus and changes diagnoses of which Catalan sectors generate external s…
O ensino da língua em sociedades bilíngues. Aspectos gramaticais e culturais do espanhol de Valência
2019
Despite their homogeneity, all languages have linguistic variety, both geographical and social, and these variations should be taken into account in the teaching and learning of a (foreign) language. In bilingual territories there are constant interferences between the spoken languages, a phenomenon which has attracted the attention of many specialists. In this article, we describe the most outstanding characteristics of spoken Spanish in Valencia, a bilingual territory where, in addition to Spanish, Valencian –a dialect of Catalan- is spoken. We also make some proposals of morphosyntactic and lexical as well as social and cultural character to apply these characteristics to the classroom o…
Gallivanting Round the Globe: Translating National Identities in Henry V
2012
In this article we shall be looking at the character of MacMorris in Henry V, and at his small but important role in the four captains’ scene. We shall explore some of the historical, cultural, political, dramaturgical and linguistic complexities of his portrayal of Irishness as a necessary preliminary study to its translation into other languages, both for the printed page and for the stage. Spanish and Catalan translations of the scene will be briefly analysed in what we hope will be the framework of a wider, multilingual preoccupation: how does national identity translate in a global context? How does —or can— MacMorris speak in other languages?
La reivindicació identitària en els narradors del Realisme Compromès de la postguerra
2017
The paper reviews the realistic and engagé movements that cover the European postwar years. And then it studies the parallel Catalan movement focusing on the problem of identity assertion in the narrative. In many of our narrators of this realism of complaint (Concepció G. Maluquer, Estanislau Torres, Víctor Mora and Joaquim Carbó) national commitment accompanyies social and political commitment. It is a peculiar trait that distinguishes our movement and gives the physiognomy of its own.
