El dibujado: volver a la pared
2021
The exhibition El dibujado by Paco Roca (IVAM, 2019) is an exploration of the paradigm shift brought forth by the abandonment of paper and reproducibility as a space for the dissemination of the comic strip. The exhibition hall of a museum (the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno) becomes a space for formal and ephemeral experimentation at different levels, from the purely creative to the pondering about the unexplored possibilities of the language of the comic book. With this exhibition cartoonist Paco Roca poses a challenge to a spectator who is called to leave his/her role as a visitor and become the reader of an experience in which s/he becomes a part of the work’s own narrative. The a…
Molecular surveillance of norovirus, 2005–16 : an epidemiological analysis of data collected from the NoroNet network
2018
BACKGROUND: The development of a vaccine for norovirus requires a detailed understanding of global genetic diversity of noroviruses. We analysed their epidemiology and diversity using surveillance data from the NoroNet network.METHODS: We included genetic sequences of norovirus specimens obtained from outbreak investigations and sporadic gastroenteritis cases between 2005 and 2016 in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. We genotyped norovirus sequences and analysed sequences that overlapped at open reading frame (ORF) 1 and ORF2. Additionally, we assessed the sampling date and country of origin of the first reported sequence to assess when and where novel drift variants originated.FINDINGS: W…
Latvia. Human Development Report 2008/2009. Accountability and Responsibility
2009
Accountability and Responsibility. The objetive of the 2008/2009 Human Development Report was to examine different levels of accountability and the specific way in which accountability is manifested in Latvia at individual, coolective, and institutional levels which come together to form an accountability "network". The Report also compares the situation in Latvia with that in the other Baltic States, the European Union, and elsewhere in the world.
Fragmenting gadolinium: Mononuclear polyoxometalate-based magnetic coolers for ultra-low temperatures
2012
The polyoxometalate clusters with formula [Gd(W 5O 18) 2] 9- and [Gd(P 5W 30O 110)] 12- each carry a single magnetic ion of gadolinium, which is the most widespread element among magnetic refrigerant materials. In an adiabatic demagnetization, the lowest attainable temperature is limited by the presence of magnetic interactions that bring about magnetic order below a critical temperature. We demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome by chemically engineering the molecules in such a way to effectively screen all magnetic interactions, suggesting their use as ultra-low-temperature coolers. © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. European comission's identity during brexit : a communication strategy change on twitter
2021
The European Union (EU) was founded to promote peace, prosperity and other values between an increasing number of member states (European Commission, 2001). However, Brexit has activated a reputation crisis that reinforces Euroscepticism (Borzel; Risse, 2018). The objective of the study is to identify the differences in the semantic construction and thematic framing of the European Commission during a two-year period, previous to Brexit and after Brexit, on a sample of 4827 tweets posted by the European Commission. Findings show that in the period before Brexit, the EU is presented as an abstract political body, highly informative on major crisis, and reactively framing messages with values…
Regulating Internet Trade in CITES Species
2013
International trade in species that are or may be endangered by collection from the wild is regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) for 176 member States (Parties). Internet commerce is a relatively new route for such trade. In 2007, the CITES Secretariat asked Parties to collect information on internet wildlife trade and report problems and implemented regulations. The reports indicated it was difficult to even approximate the influence of e-commerce on CITES-listed species (CITES Secretariat 2009). We report a case study in which we quantified international transactions over an internet auction site of CITES-listed cacti …
The long road towards cancer prevention: 4 steps backward and 8 forward
2010
At the same time andpartly as a consequence, prevalence of cancer has been risingfrom about 1.5% to 3%, especially in people of higher SES.Thus, despite better diagnoses and treatments to patients, the cancer burden is still increasing. A variety of strategieswhich integrate disease prevention policies across a widerpopulation are needed to deliver better global results: oncol-ogy might be making progress in detection and treatmentbut losing ground in prevention. This narration is not new. The ‘Europe against Cancer’ pro-gramme, which ran from 1986 to about 2002,
Improving the solid-phase extraction of “quat” pesticides from water samples
1998
A novel strategy, based on the addition of a cationic surfactant, for preventing the interferences associated with a diminution in the efficacy of solid-phase extraction (SPE) with silica cartridges of diquat, paraquat and difenzoquat in water is developed. Conditions for extraction are optimised with respect to pH, cationic surfactant and its concentration. Humic acids, anionic surfactants, inorganic salts and other organic contaminants like pesticides, phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls produce the studied interferences. The best performance is shown in the improvement of the "quats" recovery from waters with high levels of humic acids and anionic surf…
Budget burden and benefit visibility of European central level governments
2001
Central levels of government in European Union member countries are different regarding their basic institutions, powers, fiscal systems, accountability, public performance management, financial control bodies, and the like. In spite of this, the economic operation of such levels of government should be analyzed, evaluated, and compared from an efficiency viewpoint. This paper presents general indicators to systematically assess the burden and benefit visibility of public budgets of the International Monetary Fund member countries and specific estimates for the central subsystems of public revenue and expenditure now in force in such European countries. An important policy implication of th…
Virtual articulator for the analysis of dental occlusion: An update
2010
The future of dental practice is closely linked to the utilization of computer-based technology, specifically virtual reality, which allows the dental surgeon to simulate true life situations in patients. The virtual articulator has been designed for the exhaustive analysis of static and dynamic occlusion, with the purpose of substituting mechanical articulators and avoiding their errors. These tools will help both odontologists and dental prosthetists to provide the best individualized treatment for each patient. The present review analyzes the studies published in the literature on the design, functioning and applications of virtual articulators. A Medline-PubMed search was made of dental…
