Using skeleton and Hough transform variant to correct skew in historical documents

2020

International audience; As a main part of several document analysis systems, Skew estimation represents one of the major research challenges, particularly in case of historical documents exploration. In this paper, we propose an original skew angle detection and correction technique. Morphological Skeleton is introduced to considerably diminish the amount of data by eliminating the redundant pixels and preserving only the central curves of the image components. Next, the proposed method uses Progressive Probabilistic Hough Transform (PPHT) to find image lines. At the end, a specific procedure is applied in order to measure the global skew angle of the document image from these identified li…

On operads, bimodules and analytic functors

2017

We develop further the theory of operads and analytic functors. In particular, we introduce a bicategory that has operads as 0-cells, operad bimodules as 1-cells and operad bimodule maps as 2-cells, and prove that this bicategory is cartesian closed. In order to obtain this result, we extend the theory of distributors and the formal theory of monads.

Tailoring a pair of pants

2021

Abstract We show how to deform the map Log : ( C ⁎ ) n → R n such that the image of the complex pair of pants P ∘ ⊂ ( C ⁎ ) n is the tropical hyperplane by showing an (ambient) isotopy between P ∘ ⊂ ( C ⁎ ) n and a natural polyhedral subcomplex of the product of the two skeleta S × Σ ⊂ A × C of the amoeba A and the coamoeba C of P ∘ . This lays the groundwork for having the discriminant to be of codimension 2 in topological Strominger-Yau-Zaslow torus fibrations.

Random cutout sets with spatially inhomogeneous intensities

2015

We study the Hausdorff dimension of Poissonian cutout sets defined via inhomogeneous intensity measures on Ahlfors-regular metric spaces. We obtain formulas for the Hausdorff dimension of such cutouts in self-similar and self-conformal spaces using the multifractal decomposition of the average densities for the natural measures.

A Nullclines Approach to the Study of 2D Artificial Network

2019

The system of two the first order ordinary differential equations arising in the gene regulatory networks theory is studied. The structure of attractors for this system is described for three important behavioral cases: activation, inhibition, mixed activation-inhibition. The geometrical approach combined with the vector field analysis allows treating the problem in full generality. A number of propositions are stated and the proof is geometrical, avoiding complex analytic. Although not all the possible cases are considered, the instructions are given what to do in any particular situation.

Three Wives Problem and Shapley Value

2014

We examine the Talmudic three wives problem, which is a generalization of the Talmudic contested garment problem solved by Aumann and Maschler (1985) using coalitional procedure. This problem has many practical applications. In an attempt to unify all Talmudic methods, Guiasu (2010, 2011) asserts that it can be explained in terms of “run-to-the-bank”, that is, of Shapley value in a “cumulative game”. It can be challenged because the coalitional procedure yields the same result as the nucleolus, which corresponds to a “dual game”. As Guiasu’s solution is paradoxical (it has all the appearances of truth), my contribution consists in explaining the concepts, particularly truncation, that play …

The Logic of Gift: Inspiring behavior in organizations beyond the limits of duty and exchange

2016

[EN] Giving without the expectation of reward is difficult to understand in organizational contexts. In opposition to a logic based on self-interest or a sense of duty, a "logic of gift" has been proposed as a way to understand the phenomenon of free, unconditional giving. However, the rationale behind, and effects of, this logic have been under-explored. This paper responds by first clarifying the three logics of action¿the logic of exchange, the logic of duty, and the logic of gift¿and then explains how their balanced integration promises to enhance organizational life and outcomes. Having explicated the unique character and contributions of the logic of gift, the paper further suggests p…

Does persistence in using R&D tax credits help to achieve product innovations?

2021

Despite the generosity of its tax system, Spain is far from EU countries in terms of R&D spending and innovation outcomes. A policy instrument commonly used to foster firms’ R&D investment are tax incentives. The use of this instrument is not generalized in firms spending on R&D, and only a fraction of firms are regular claimants. This paper investigates whether persistence in using tax credits is positively related to product innovations, beyond R&D investments. We consider that firms investing in qualified R&D and using tax credits regularly are likely to be firms aiming at innovating. By contrast, occasional tax credit users may be firms investing in R&D for different reasons, such as ex…

Discrete Structure Shakedown Design Ices ’95, Hawai, July 30 – August 3, 1995

1995

The minimum volume shakedown design problem was already approached by several authors with studies devoted to discrete structures (see e.g. [1]–[5]) and to continuous structures (see e.g. [6]). Except some very simple structural typologies, also the optimal shakedown design problem formulations for continuous structures need to be discretized in the application stage. In any case, the relevant optimal shakedown design problem for discrete (or discretized) structures is formulated in terms of design variables as well as behavioural variables, and consists in the search for the/a minimum volume design among all feasible designs (i.e. able to shakedown). Due to its strong non-linearity, the la…

Europe 2020 Sl-LAB: A New Center for Economic and Social Development in Sicily

2014

The debate on the determinants of regional and local development has been stimulated recently by the European strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth defined as Europe 2020. We present the objectives and structure of a new laboratory (SI-LAB) for the development of Sicilian economy promoted by the University of Palermo. In particular, we highlight the fundamental issues related to the incoming functioning of the Lab as a new oganization devoted to analyzing public policy issues, and fostering new ways of entrepreurship at the local level.
