At present, the cellular expression of mGluR3 and mGluR5 has been mostly studied in terms of proteins with observations suggesting the expression of both mGluR3 and mGluR5 in neuronal and in glial cells. They consist of many gonadal follicles that include the germ stem cells enclosed by the somatic cells of the follicle wall. Follicle wall cells are more numerous at the follicle apices than at the distal parts, but different cell types cannot be distinguished. In male larvae, the appearance of apical follicle tissue, derived from follicle wall cells, marks the onset of testis differentiation. Long-term electrophysiological recordings from the guinea-pig pineal organ show that three types of intrinsic cells can be distinguished: (i) Cells showing constant firing rates over periods of up to 24 hours. (ii) Cells which are highly active during the day and show a low firing rate during the night. Based on two unrelated index patients afflicted with INCL, fetal chorion tissues were studied from subsequent pregnancies of the two respective mothers resulting in the prenatal diagnosis of INCL in two of the three pregnancies. Documentation of INCL was based on electron microscopy and DNA studies of the biopsied chorion tissue, later confirmed in the two affected fetuses after termination of their pregnancies by demonstrating INCL-specific lipopigments in post-mortem tissues, in the liver of both aborted fetuses and, additionally, in spleen and skeletal muscle of one of the affected fetuses. Background Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is induced in many cell types as a defense mechanism against stress. We have investigated the possible role of endogenous HO-1 in the effector phase of arthritis using the K/BxN serum transfer model of arthritis in HO-1 heterozygous and homozygous knock-out mice.
