Nonlinear collective oscillations of an ion cloud in a Paul trap

1997

In an experiment using a Paul trap, we create a ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}$ ion cloud by electron ionization of the background gas at ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$-mbar residual pressure. Exciting the ions parametrically at twice the frequency of the secular motion of ions in the $r$ or $z$ direction, we observe a narrow resonance at some distance from the motional resonance center if the amplitude of the exciting field exceeds a threshold value. The threshold value decreases with increasing ion number. Since the narrow resonance does not shift with ion number, we interpret it as a collective resonance of the center of mass of the ion cloud. The resonance shape exhibits the typical form of a driven a…

Measurement of spin correlation in tt¯ production using dilepton final states

2011

We measure the correlation between the spin of the top quark and the spin of the anti-top quark in (ttbar -> W+ W- b bbar -> l+ nu b l- nubar bbar) final states produced in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, where l is an electron or muon. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 and were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The correlation is extracted from the angles of the two leptons in the t and tbar rest frames, yielding a correlation strength C= 0.10^{+0.45}_{-0.45}, in agreement with the NLO QCD prediction within two standard deviations, but also in agreement with the no correlation hypothesis.

Measurement of the Effective Weak Mixing Angle inpp¯→Z/γ*→e+e−Events

2015

We present a measurement of the fundamental parameter of the standard model, the weak mixing angle, in $p\bar{p}\rightarrow Z/\gamma^{*}\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ events at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to 9.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The effective weak mixing angle is extracted from the forward-backward charge asymmetry as a function of the invariant mass around the Z boson pole. The measured value of $\sin^2\theta_{\text{eff}}^{\text{$\ell$}}=0.23146 \pm 0.00047$ is the most precise measurement from light quark interactions to date, with a precision close to the best LEP and SLD results.

Microscopic Dynamics of Hard Ellipsoids in their Liquid and Glassy Phase

2001

To investigate the influence of orientational degrees of freedom onto the dynamics of molecular systems in its supercooled and glassy regime we have solved numerically the mode-coupling equations for hard ellipsoids of revolution. For a wide range of volume fractions $\phi$ and aspect ratios $x_{0}$ we find an orientational peak in the center of mass spectra $\chi_{000}^{''}(q,\omega)$ and $\phi_{000}^{''} (q,\omega)$ about one decade below a high frequency peak. This orientational peak is the counterpart of a peak appearing in the quadrupolar spectra $\chi_{22m}^{''}(q,\omega)$ and $\phi_{22m}^{''}(q,\omega)$. The latter peak is almost insensitive on $\phi$ for $x_{0}$ close to one, i.e. f…

Precise measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton channel at D0

2011

We measure the top quark mass (mt) in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV using dilepton ttbar->W+bW-bbar->l+nubl-nubarbbar events, where l denotes an electron, a muon, or a tau that decays leptonically. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We obtain mt = 174.0 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.4(syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the current world average mt = 173.3 +- 1.1 GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of mt in the dilepton channel.

General Relativistic Dynamics of Irrotational Dust: Cosmological Implications

1994

The non--linear dynamics of cosmological perturbations of an irrotational collisionless fluid is analyzed within General Relativity. Relativistic and Newtonian solutions are compared, stressing the different role of boundary conditions in the two theories. Cosmological implications of relativistic effects, already present at second order in perturbation theory, are studied and the dynamical role of the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor is elucidated.

X-Ray Eclipse Time Delays in 4U2129+47

2007

4U 2129+47 was discovered in the early 80's and classified as an accretion disk corona source due to its broad and partial X-ray eclipses. The 5.24 hr binary orbital period was inferred from the X-ray and optical light curve modulation, implying a late K or M spectral type companion star. The source entered a low state in 1983, during which the optical modulation disappeared and an F8 IV star was revealed, suggesting that 4U 2129+47 might be part of a triple system. The nature of 4U 2129+47 has since been investigated, but no definitive conclusion has been reached. Here, we present timing and spectral analyses of two XMM-Newton observations of this source, carried out in May and June, 2005.…

Molecular Dynamics of a 1,4-Polybutadiene Melt. Comparison of Experiment and Simulation

1999

We have made detailed comparison of the local and chain dynamics of a melt of 1,4-polybutadiene (PBD) as determined from experiment and molecular dynamics simulation at 353 K. The PBD was found to have a random microstructure consisting of 40% cis, 50% trans, and 10% 1,2-vinyl units with a number-average degree of polymerization 〈Xn〉 = 25.4. Local (conformational) dynamics were studied via measurements of the 13C NMR spin−lattice relaxation time T1 and the nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE) at a proton resonance of 300 MHz for 12 distinguishable nuclei. Chain dynamics were studied on time scales up to 22 ns via neutron spin−echo (NSE) spectroscopy with momentum transfers ranging from q = …

Measurement of multi-jet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at a 7 TeV center-of-mass energy

2011

Inclusive multi-jet production is studied in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.4 pb−1. Results on multi-jet cross sections are presented and compared to both leading-order plus parton-shower Monte Carlo predictions and to next-to-leading-order QCD calculations.

Statics and dynamics of dense polymer systems studied by monte carlo simulation

1995

Monte Carlo simulations of coarse–grained models of macromolecules offer a unique tool to study the interplay between coil conformations, thermodynamic properties, and chain configurational relaxation and diffusion. Two examples are discussed where the chain conformation strongly differs from a gaussian coil: (i) collapsed chains in a bad solvent, where anomalous diffusion occurs in the Rouse limit and the relaxation time increases at least with the third power of chain length. (ii) Expulsion of a chain from a semidilute polymer brush. The initially stretched chain contracts to a gaussian coil and the center of mass moves outward with constant velocity until it reaches the region of the “la…
