Managers’ Moral Struggle : A Case Study on Ethical Dilemmas and Ethical Decision-making in the Context of Immigration
2019
This qualitative study explores the types of ethical dilemmas that Finnish managers working in reception centres for asylum seekers have encountered and whether the moral intensity of the ethical issues was observable in the ethical decision-making. It concludes that the majority of the managers interviewed encountered ethical dilemmas relating to the termination of reception services. The ethical dilemmas were stratified into seven groups: ambiguous or complete absence of relevant instructions, lack of support, conflicting values, withholding information, pressure, discretionary stress, and unjust decisions on asylum applications. In addition, various dimensions of moral intensity were obs…
The colour of light for urban spaces
2013
Light in urban spaces was first introduced to prevent crimes against both people and properties and, while there is no study that confirms crimes' reduction in lit spaces, it is undeniable that people feel safer in lit urban spaces. Over the years it became evident that light can also improve the liveability of cities and enhance their characteristics, therefore in the last years a growing attention was paid to urban lighting design taking into account the environmental impact and energy saving requirements too. The will to use the lighting design project to improve the liveability of historical centres it’s clear: the city during the night is no more conceived like a sum of lit architectur…
Effects of ocean acidification on embryonic respiration and development of a temperate wrasse living along a natural CO2 gradient
2016
Volcanic CO2 seeps provide opportunities to investigate the effects of ocean acidification on organisms in the wild. To understand the influence of increasing CO2 concentrations on the metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) and the development of ocellated wrasse early life stages, we ran two field experiments, collecting embryos from nesting sites with different partial pressures of CO2 [pCO2; ambient (400 µatm) and high (800-1000 µatm)] and reciprocally transplanting embryos from ambient- to high-CO2 sites for 30 h. Ocellated wrasse offspring brooded in different CO2 conditions had similar responses, but after transplanting portions of nests to the high-CO2 site, embryos from parents that sp…
Student Mentoring in the Master Programme “Pedagogy”: the case of University of Latvia
2019
There is a developing interest in mentoring and tutoring in the higher education in Latvia. Mentoring is looked at as a retention strategy to support students to remain and continue studies and as a tool to prevent students’ drop out from the university. Since academic year 2016/2017 several programmes of tutoring and mentoring in basic studies (bachelor level studies)have been developed and financially supported at the University of Latvia, but so far mentoring has not been used for Master level students. The Master program “Pedagogy” includes a theoretical course “Methods of Mentoring at the Educational Institution”. Since academic year 2018/2019 new tasks were introduced for the second y…
Recupero sostenibile nel centro storico di Petralia Soprana: strategie per il retrofit energetico.
2013
The valorization of building in the historical centers of limited territorial environment, such as the ones in the Madonie’s Park, represents a requirement of mountain communities, which are the witnesses of a gradual abandonment of historical buildings, representative of the local cultural heritage, mainly because they are inadequate to ensure indoor comfort. Also for the recovery of these buildings, technological, energy and economic issues have to be evaluated, compatibly with the historical value. In particular this urban area, typical of the Madonie’s Park, is an architectural, historical and material heritage that merges with the natural and scenic values of the area, representing the…
Postgraduate Students’ Experience of Using a Learning Management System to Support Their Learning: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

LMS has mainly been used by teachers as storage and transfer of course material. To effectively utilise digital technologies in education, there is a need for more knowledge of student experiences with digital technology, such as LMSs and especially regarding how LMSs can contribute to student engagement and learning. Objective This study aimed to gain knowledge about postgraduate nursing students’ experiences with the use of LMS in a subject in an advanced practice nursing ma…

"Que inventen ellos"
2011
Although a clear relationship exists between investment in science and technology and economic development of society, for the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government) science is a nice addition that makes dream but can not bring immediate cash. Therefore they hav…
Representation of the Student-Centred Learning Approach on University Website
2017
The topicality of the change of the educational paradigms in the national and global context forms a necessity and challenge for the higher education system to undergo the dynamic change in moving towards more individualised education process. The student-centred learning (SCL) approach as a topical form of implementation of the educational process conforms to the needs of contemporary society and as such advances growth at both individual as well as institutional level. The University website provides an insight into the implementation of the educational process by representing the mindset, values, and positions of individuals at the University. The aim of the research is to evaluate the r…
