Announced in 2005, the encyclical of Pope Francis: Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home, is a dramatic appeal to change the attitude towards the environment and to take action to save it. The analysis was carried out from the viewpoint of ecolinguistics, and the criterion of the so-called environmental adequacy. At the center of attention was the problem of anthropocentrism, which for ecolinguists is the main “contamination ” of the language and the source of improper relations between man and nature. This retrospective and descriptive 4-year study was undertaken to describe cardiac changes in subclinical and overt hyperthyroidism.We revised the charts of 386 consecutive cardiopathic women whose blood samples were referred to the Radioimmunoassay Laboratory to evaluate thyroid function from 1 January 1997 through 31 December 2000.After excluding women because euthyroid or hypothyroid, or taking amiodarone and women with hypertension, rheumatic disease, myocardial infarction, a total of 31 hyperthyroid women were thus selected for the study: 19 with subclinical hyperthyroidism and 12 with overt hyperthyroidism. The effect of digitonin on chitin synthetase present in membrane (MMF) and cytoplasmic fractions (chitosomes) (CF) from C. albicans yeast protoplasts has been determined. The zymogen is preferentially, but not exclusively, solubilized by digitonin from MMF. Centrifugation of distinct solubilized preparations, containing either zymogen, in vivo active enzyme and/or trypsin activated enzyme, on linear sucrose gradients suggests that both zymogen and trypsin activated enzyme sediment slightly slower than the active enzyme, pointing out differences between the activation processes in vivo and in vitro or, alternatively, that both enzyme activities (active in vivo and zymogenic) correspond to di…

Representing Tibetan Buddhism in books on spirituality : A discourse-historical approach

This article looks into how Tibetan Buddhism is framed in terms of East-West dichotomy in six popular books on Buddhism and spirituality. Discourse Historical Approach is employed to uncover the rhetorical representation of Tibetan Buddhism to the readers. A critical post-colonial perspective offers an insight into various power dynamics, arising from these representations, structured according to Yoshikawa's model of intercultural communication between East and West. The various power outcomes of rhetorical styles range from Ethnocentric to Dialogical, with their ethical consequences and problematics discussed.

Sakarība starp acs iekšējo spiedienu un redzes nerva diska parametriem

Maģistra darbs uzrakstīts uz 43 lappusēm. Darbs satur 25 attēlus un atsauces uz 41 literatūras avotu. Darba mērķis bija novērtēt acs iekšējā spiediena saistību ar redzes nerva ekskavācijas eksentricitāti cilvēkiem, kuriem nav konstatēta glaukoma. Pētījumā tika veikts Itālijā un tika analizētas 100 cilvēku acis. Pētījuma dalībnieku vecums bija no 25 līdz 45 gadiem, no kuriem 41 bija sieviete un 59 vīrieši. Tika novērtēts acs iekšējais spiediens, ņemot vērā radzenes pahimetrijas datus un tika iegūtas ar fundus kameru redzes nervu fotogrāfijas. Darbā tiek secināts, ka veselām acīm nepastāv korelācija starp acs iekšējo spiedienu un ekskavācijas lielumu, kā arī nepastāv korelācija starp vecumu. …
