Accuracy of death certificates for motor neuron disease and multiple sclerosis in the province of Palermo in southern Italy

Mortality studies based on death certificates (DCs) are relatively inexpensive and easy to conduct. Therefore, they are frequently used to evaluate variations of geographical and temporal patterns, particularly in uncommon diseases. Recent surveys of motor neuron disease (MND) and multiple sclerosis (MS) based on official mortality statistics in Italy showed a decreasing trend of mortality from northern to southern Italy. The causes of narcolepsy are unknown.1 Genetic factors such as positivity for HLA DR2 or certain genotypes of tumor necrosis factor–alpha or the orexin gene only explain a fraction of the risk. In 1971, upon the initiative of the United Polish Workers’ Party – the ruling force in the period of the Polish People’s Republic – there was established secondary technical school designed for leading workers. The Resolution No. 124 of the Council of Ministers of 1 July 1971 opened the possibility for workers to gain vocational qualifications and to obtain the certificate of secondary education after two years of studying. The study takes up the subject of the history of the Catholic community living in the town of Olesno and the surrounding villages, belonging to the Olesno parish. Thanks to the marriage records in Polish language from 1819-1829, preserved in the National Archives in Opole, it is possible to present using statistical methods: how many weddings took place in the parish in particular months of the year, what day of the week was most often chosen for a wedding, what was the marital status of the newlyweds, their age at the time of marriage, along with their social and geographical origin. The study area includes the Municipalities of Gela, Niscemi and Butera located in the South of Sicily, Italy. In 1990 it was declared Area at High Risk of Environmental Crisis. In 2000 part of it was designated as Gela Reclamation Site of National Interest, RSNI. The site includes a private industrial area, public and marine areas, for a total of 51 km(2). Gela populationin 2008 was 77,145 (54,774 in 1961). Sea level:46 m. Total area: 276 km(2). Grid reference: 37 degrees 4' 0" N, 14 degrees 15' 0" E. Niscemi and Butera are located border to Gela.
