Molecular semiconductor-doped insulator (MSDI) heterojunctions as new transducers for chemical sensors

International audience; This article describes a new principle of transduction involving an heterojunction between a Molecular Semiconductor and a Doped Insulator (MSDI). Herein, we report on an MSDI-based sensor featuring an heterojunction between a lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc), which acts as Molecular Semiconductor (MS) and a thin film of Doped Insulator (DI) made of substituted or fluorinated copper phthalocyanine (CuFPc, where = 0, 8, 16). Morphological and chemical dynamics upon electrochemical cyclic sodiation of electrochromic tungsten oxide coatings extracted by in situ ellipsometry.

The sodiation–desodiation process of sputtered amorphous electrochromic tungsten oxide coatings in an aqueous-based medium was simultaneously monitored over 99 cycles by cyclic voltammetry and in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry. This allowed extracting the evolution of optical and geometrical parameters upon cycling. The resulting electrochemical coloring-bleaching process was dynamically fitted in the 1.8–2.8 eV optical range with a four-phase model including a constrained spline parametrization of the dielectric function. Upper limit on the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy tau neutrinos from the Pierre Auger Observatory

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to Earth-skimming tau neutrinos that interact in Earth’s crust. Tau leptons from ντ charged-current interactions can emerge and decay in the atmosphere to produce a nearly horizontal shower with a significant electromagnetic component. The data collected between 1 January 2004 and 31 August 2007 are used to place an upper limit on the diffuse flux of ντ at EeV energies. Assuming an E−2ν differential energy spectrum the limit set at 90% C.L. is E2νdNντdEν<1.3×10−7  GeV cm−2 s−1 sr−1 in the energy range 2×1017 eV<E<2×1019  eV.

The Pros and Cons of Beyond Standard Model Interpretations of ANITA Events

The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment has observed two air shower events with energy $\sim 500~{\rm PeV}$ emerging from the Earth with exit angles $\sim 30^\circ$ above the horizon. As was immediately noted by the ANITA Collaboration, these events (in principle) could originate in the atmospheric decay of an upgoing $\tau$-lepton produced through a charged current interaction of a $\nu_\tau$ inside the Earth. Chiral hemicucurbit[8]uril as an anion receptor: selectivity to size, shape and charge distribution

A novel eight-membered macrocycle of the hemicucurbit[n]uril family, chiral (all-R)-cyclohexanohemicucurbit[8]uril (cycHC[8]) binds anions in a purely protic solvent with remarkable selectivity. The cycHC[8] portals open and close to fully encapsulate anions in a 1 : 1 ratio, resembling a molecular Pac-Man™. Comprehensive gas, solution and solid phase studies prove that the binding is governed by the size, shape and charge distribution of the bound anion. Description of Solid-to-Solid Redox Processes Based on the Voltammetry of Immobilized Particles Methodology: A Logistic Approximation

A semiempirical model to describe the voltammetry of nontopotactic solid-to-solid redox processes occurring in the voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) electrochemistry is described. It is applied to the reduction of solid metal compounds to the corresponding metal in contact with suitable electrolytes. The model is based on the assumption that the transferred charge is a logistic function of the applied potential, a situation that applies for reversible redox processes involving strongly adsorbed reactants.
